Summary
Ilya was 12 years old when he saw his mother, Irina, in their living room staring at a magazine when he got home. He was a growing boy and played a lot of hockey so he blurted out, “Mama, I am hungry! What’s our food?”
“Oh hello there too, Ilyusha,” his mother chided. She, however, hadn’t lifted her eyes from the magazine. She was tracing her fingers lightly on a page.
“Mama, who’s that?” Ilya asked as he looked over his Mama’s shoulder.
“It’s Lucy Liu,” his mother answered softly.
“Who?”
“Ilyusha , look at the beautiful constellation on her face,” his Mama said softly. She was still reverently touching her fingertips over the woman’s freckles.
“Constellation? You mean веснушки (vesnushki)?” Ilya said, scratching his head. He had seen freckles on his friends from school, but he never called them constellations.
“No, Ilyusha, they are more beautiful than freckles. Look at them together with her features. They are stars on her face,” his mama explained patiently.
