Verlaine pulled Chuuya closer, pressing his face against his chest as he rested his chin atop Chuuya’s red hair. The sudden embrace left the red-haired boy stunned. Verlaine, meanwhile, spoke in that manipulative tone of his. “You’re with me now, Chuuya. You don’t have to cry anymore. Forget everything from the past seven years. You belong only to me now.”
Chuuya’s gaze shot upward instantly. His eyes were red, his lashes, matching the color of his hair, damp. “What…?” he whispered, his voice caught somewhere between anger and fragility.
“Everything will be wonderful from now on, little brother,” Verlaine said, gently wiping away Chuuya’s tears with his thumb. “Perhaps you still need time, I understand. You’re just a little tired and upset. But don’t worry. Your big brother will take care of everything for you.”
Before Chuuya could even process what to say, his eyes widened as a syringe pierced his neck. In the end, his vision slowly darkened, and he lost consciousness.

Shane Hollander meets Ilya Rozanov on his twenty-fourth birthday at The Ice Palace, the gay club where Ilya works as a bartender. Shane Hollander is 18 years old and a beta when he first competes at World Juniors in Saskatchewan. Shane's only expectation is to bring home gold. Instead, Shane unexpectedly presents as an omega during the gold medal game against Russia. Luckily, his rival Ilya Rozanov is there to help Shane, which is a good thing because Shane knows nothing about being an omega. Rozanov kindly offers to extend his stay to help Shane through his first heat.

Winning the Cup after the loss at the Olympics was euphoric. In the back of his mind, he knew that commentators would be talking about how he had ended a thirteen-year drought for the Raiders. They would also be talking about how the Metros were on year fifteen of a losing streak. Maybe next year would be Shane’s year.
It wouldn’t be Ilya’s. He was waiting for his trade to go through. The media didn’t know it, but the management had a deal pending the last game of the season. They had all been sympathetic to Ilya when he had asked to be traded to Ottawa. But with their high chances for the Cup, they had held off. He was grateful. He wanted to win a Cup with Cliff. He wanted this for the Raiders. He spent their on-ice celebration twirling with babies, kissing WAGs.
In the locker room, he was drenched in champagne, laughing, behaving poorly. But he grabbed his phone and saw the text from Shane, “I’m so proud. Have fun with your team tonight.”
He texted back, “Congratulatory phone sex when I get home? I earned this.”
“You earned it,” agreed Shane.
