Wasn't just a Dream

Summary:

Weiwuxian wakes up bored and searches for something he could tease Lan Wangji with again, and stumbles across the perfect old ancient artefact.

(Or Weiwuxian fishes out the old incense burner in hopes of teasing Lan Wangji over some of his own dreams, but it ends up sweeter than expected.)

Notes:

This work is inspired by the mdzs audio drama extras called Pillow Talk, where we can listen to Teen Xian and Teen Wangji while they were stuck in that cave. When Wei Wuxian was feverish, he asked Lan Wangji if he could borrow his leg as a pillow because it was uncomfortable on the floor. Lan Wangji refused, but when Wei Wuxian fell asleep, Lan Wangji ended up pulling him onto his leg himself, since he was already whipped at a young age. Afterwards, when Wei Wuxian was about to wake up, Lan Wangji brought him back onto the floor. Wei Wuxian ended up waking, thinking it was a dream, and never found out. For some reason, I find that extremely sad.
So, with the help of the incense burner, I wanted him to find out because nobody can deny me that LWJ must have dreamed about this exact moment again during the thirteenth years he was dead.
Also, this is my first work, and I’m not very good at writing, so please don’t expect too much. English isn’t my first language either, and I miraculously got sick while writing this fic, so my head was pounding like crazy. Also this is a repost cuz the first version felt short and rushed

Well, enough yapping enjoy.....

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Golden sunlight spilled through the still curtains of the Jingshi. The grass outside was adorned with soft, transparent beads leftovers of the storm from last night, the air still carrying a gentle, musky scent of wet wood. Although the enthusiastic chirping of the birds outside indicated that the world had been awake for quite a while, some creatures or in this scenario, a specific person in the Cloud Recesses would never manage to rise at the respected hour written on the wall of rules. Inside the Jingshi, which hadn’t been quiet for a while now, something stirred.

..hnn...

..mhhpp~...

A wet, strange sensation sticking to his cheek yanked him out of his glorious slumber.

..ughh..what?..

Sighing, After having lain like a dead, unmoving corpse for quite a while, he begrudgingly lifted his right hand and swiped the cause of his awakens away, bringing it closer for examination before glaring at the drool on his fingers and shivering slightly in disgust before starting to rub the sleep out of his bleary eyes. He has always been the kind of person to wake up with bedhead everyday, making him look like one of his husbands precious unsuspecting rabbits, the hairs sticking out off every corner indicating towards it.

Though Despite having lived in the Cloud Recesses for quite a while now, he would never be able to adjust to the Sect’s punishing early-rising rules even with the help of his perfect Husband.

Every day, it would go like this, before starting his own day, Lan Zhan would earnestly try to wake his hibernating spouse, with no success.

With a fond sigh, he would carry him out of the bed with gentle arms, as if he were the most precious thing in the world, like those couples in romance novels where the man carries his lover toward the sunlight to run off together. And then bathe his still-dead-asleep lover.

Sometimes, when he stirred awake, he would reach out blindly with closed eyes like a lost kitten or duckling whatever just not a puppy, he didnt like them, after all, searching for any part of Lanzhan’s body to latch onto, pressing it to his lips and showering it with gentle, lingering kisses. His dear husband would always obediently let him do as he pleased, quietly soaking in the enjoyment of each kiss. And also gifting him with generous kisses himself.

Later, he would dry and comb his hair with careful, precise hands, making sure he wouldn’t disturb his husband’s precious sleep again. After that, he would wrap him in a fresh set of robes that smelled just like Lan Zhan, after mindfully steeping them in sandalwood so he wouldn’t feel quite so lonely when waking up, surrounded by that comforting scent. He would press a tender kiss to his forehead and gently settle him back into bed before disappearing for sect duties. He liked complaining about the last part whenever he found the chance.

Occasionally, he would be blessed to wake up in his dear Lanzhan’s arms, something that, mournfully, didn’t happen nearly enough, thanks to the pile of sect duties that constantly stole his precious husband’s time.

Still, thinking of their sweet daily life, Weiwuxian couldn’t help but grin as he glanced down. True to his words, he found himself wrapped in a new set of robes, carrying the familiar, comforting scent of sandalwood. Feeling warm all over.

𝘈𝘪𝘺𝘢, 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘻𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘻𝘩𝘢𝘯, 𝘪𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵, 𝘐 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘮𝘺𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧..,Weiwuxian muttered fondly.

Finally climbing out of their shared bed and taking a big stretch feeling his lower back slightly sore, he glanced around the room with a mischievous grin and clicked his tongue.

𝘕𝘰𝘸, 𝘯𝘰𝘸… 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰 𝘐 𝘥𝘰 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘷𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘧𝘵 𝘮𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘭𝘺 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴, 𝘌𝘳-𝘨𝘦𝘨𝘦? he mused, his tone dripping with mischief.

𝘈𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘭𝘭, 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘸è𝘪 𝘴𝘩í.., He thinks, bringing up a finger to tap on his nose mindlessly, while glancing out the window next to their bed and finding the sun already high up the clear sky not a single cloud in sight. While rummaging through his thoughts, something caught his eye, and with a big, mischievous grin, he had already decided how he could “bother” his dear husband today though it couldn’t really be called bothering, since his dear Lan Zhan was far too enamored to be annoyed by his antics.

As the Jingshi doors slowly crept open, a tall man dressed in white robes entered the room. The snow white boots took one step before coming to a halt. The person in question glanced down and sighed.

Lan Wangji finds the love of his life lying “dead on the floor.” With measured, unhurried steps, he walks toward the small table and sets the containers on top before opening them as elegantly as possible, as you would expect from the Hanguang jun. Immediately, the room fills with the delicious scent of spiced meat and homemade soup.

And suddenly, his husband Wei Ying jumps back to life, drifting toward the table like the gust of wind you'd find roaming around every river, that brings your hair flying at every possible direction and gives off just the right vibe, while bedazzling Lan Wangji with his most charming smile.

“Lan Zhan! You’re finally back!" he called out with his oh–𝘴𝘰 precious smile he could never get enough of.

With a low hum and a nod, he indicated to his beloved to sit down. Although nobody else could see any change in his stoic expression after sticking around him like glue for so long, Wei Wuxian didn’t miss the tiny, fond tilt of his lover’s lips and his softened, lovely golden eyes, that always appear whenever he lays his eyes on his beloved.

With a big grin, he happily obliged to his husband’s request and shamelessly made his way onto his lap. Immediately, he could feel his husband’s strong arms snaking around his waist and pulling him closer in a firm but gentle grip.

Leaning against his firm chest Wei Wuxian grinned and patted his spouse’s arm a few times.
“Aiya, Lan Zhan, how am I supposed to eat if you hold me this tightly, hm?”

With unwavering determination to hold his lover’s waist as everyday, Lan Wangji with his newly found, bratty personality he’d harvested from Wei Wuxian, ignored his husband’s weak protest for freedom. Instead, he set to work, carefully picking the juiciest, most tender vegetables and meat for his husband’s plate.

Wei Wuxian shrugged it off, cackling at his husband’s demeanor, clearly something he had picked up from living with him.
“Pftt, ignoring your poor, poor Wei Ying now?” he teased, curling a finger toward his husband’s lower chin and scratching it playfully, like a cat.

Lan Zhan sighed fondly and gently pushed Wei Wuxian’s hands away, having let him have his fun.
“Eat,” he said softly, his tone firm but filled with care.

Wei Wuxian gave him an exaggerated pout and stuck out his tongue, clearly relishing his husband’s patience. Then he happily dove into the food that his dear Lan Zhan had prepared just for him, enthusiastically munching on the best pieces of meat carefully picked out by his beloved. Practically glowing.

All the while, Lanzhan's pretty golden eyes softened from love, never left him, his long slender fingers, he uses to pluck his guqin with are currently plucking him instead, squeezeing and rubbing small circles on his husband’s slim waist tenderly.

Wei Wuxian squirmed mischievously in protest.

𝘈𝘪𝘺𝘢, 𝘓𝘢𝘯 𝘡𝘩𝘢𝘯!
𝘐 𝘵𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘯 𝘮𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘦. 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘺 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯?! He thought frantically.

Lan Wangji let out a soft huff for anyone else it might have meant nothing, but from him, it was practically laughter.

“Wei Ying. Behave,” he ordered gently.

So the rest of the meal continues like a whirlwind.

While Wei Wuxian is contently lying in his husband’s strong arms like a lazy cat, almost snoozing off, Lan Wangji has already finished stacking the plates together. He is now staring at his husband with a raised eyebrow, clearly indicating his curiosity, confusion, or interest whatever one might call it at the thing lying on top of the table that clearly does not belong there.

On top the table lies an artefact it has the body of an bear, nose of an elephant, eyes of an rhinoceros, tail of a bull and limbs of a tiger.

Wei Wuxian just grins and shrugs, feigning innocence.

“Oh, that? It’s an incense burner.”

Wei Wuxian cackles inwardly, knowing damn well that Lan Wangji knows what it is and is merely wondering why it is here. After all, they have “played” with it a few times already and made some… interesting experiences.

After a while of silence Wei Wuxian cracks open one eye, eyeing over his husband’s face lazily before his eyes turn into happy crescents. He then leans over, dangerously close, and whispers into his ear.

“…Lan Zhan, don’t tell me… did this crap just turn you on?” he teases playfully. “After all… I could feel your interest growing while I was sitting on your la—”

Before he can finish his sentence, Wei Wuxian is silenced with a deep kiss. A soft moan escapes him as he sighs and melts into it feeling like hes floating.

After they break apart, Wei Wuxian smacks his chest playfully and chuckles breathlessly.
“Dirty husband! What are you thinking of again, hm?” he teases, infuriatingly.

He is then suddenly picked up without warning. With a yelp, Wei Wuxian throws his arms around his husband’s neck and wraps his legs around his hips, laughing brightly as he is carried back to their shared bed.

Suddenly, Wei Wuxian feels a naughty hand finding its way onto his butt, and before he can react, it squeezes down firmly.

“Ah!”

“…Er-gege, be gentler. My skin bruises easily~”

With a frown, Lan Wangji throws his misbehaving husband onto their shared bed.

While lying in each other’s warm embrace, Wei Wuxian is being spoiled with aftercare, sprawled lazily across his husband's chest, listening to the steady heartbeats, the slow rising of his chest, and feeling his lover’s hands gently massaging his sore back. He sighs contently. The room slowly begins to grow misty, lazy clouds drifting into every corner, curiously wrapping the two tangled lovers in their bed beneath a soft, smoky veil. Closing his eyes, he thinks that he wouldn't be able to go anywhere without feeling sore all over after this, but that’s alright there’s nowhere he’d rather be. Slowly drifting away in a quiet, steady rhythm like that boat they rented in Caiyi the other day, just the two of them in a small wooden boat they found hanging on a lake, gliding through the water filled to the brim with pink lotus blossoms, leaving the land to explore places further away. That other day they were as crammed together as today. Not long after, they find themselves fast asleep in each other’s embrace, breathing the same air.

the soft crackling of fire and the gentle patter of droplets against the ground lure him from his deep slumber. The loud snoring matched the rumbling of a monster they, once long ago defeated together.

Slowly regaining his senses, Wei Wuxian notices that they are no longer in the warmth of their shared bed, instead he is greeted with hard stone. Feeling a little irritated, he pouts slightly while looking up, feeling a little disoriented his vision swimming in search of his dear Lan Zhan.

“Wei Ying.”

Hearing the sweet tone of his beloved, Weiwuxian immediately feels better. With a big grin, he tilts his head to the side and finds Lanwangji staring at him with those lovely golden eyes. Always quicker to wake than him. Scrambling into a sitting pose he calls out:

“Lan Zhan! Where are we this time, hm?” he teases, nudging closer so that they are sharing the same breath. After waking up he couldn't help but feel slightly familiar with this place the cold stone underneath, the maple leafes scattered across the pond but he wasn't in the mood to give much thought towards it rather relishing in teasing his lover.

Wei Wuxian’s grin widens as he notices the tips of his ears turning slightly rosy, wanting to tease them towards bright red.
But before he could utter a word,
staring straight ahead, Lan Wangji answers in an even tone gaze somehow seeming far away, “The Xuanwu Cave.”

Wei Wuxian’s eyes widen slightly before they slowly drift toward the two smaller figures enveloped in a soft, cozy light brought by a Bonfire sitting next to them. Only then does he register the familiarity of each stone wall that were also present on the same experience long ago. The place where his previous body was branded, and where, with the help of Lan Wangji, he managed to defeat a failed divine beast at the mere age of sixteen.

…The Xuanwu Cave?

Suddenly, he feels a wave of nostalgia drift over him, flushing all his senses. A distant ringing grows louder and louder until it takes over his entire head. For a moment, he sees only white feeling as if hes floating his head feeling all warm, puffy and heavy, weirdly familiar. He really wants to lay down.., Before voices slowly begin to clear, meandering their way toward him, warm steady hands gently tilt his world towards his side grounding him.

“…𝘓𝘦𝘵 𝘮𝘦 𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘸 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘭𝘢𝘱 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘦, 𝘸𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶?…”

Slowly regaining his senses, his head feeling like its about to split in half, eyes burning as if someone squeezed citrones on them and disoriented, he tries to call out, though it comes out far smaller than he anticipated.

Taking a frustrated sniff with his stuffed nose before moving around slightly, he managed to draw out a light gasp next to his ear, afterwards feeling even dizier.

"Weiying?"

Just keep your hand here,
my head is pounding madly…
help me massage it…

A pleasant hum sounded before he felt warm, gentle hands slowly, carefully sliding into his hair and soothing out the knots in his head…

"Don't move your head around."

This dream feels so real.

He started to wiggle in place again like the annoying creature he is. Suddenly, the evil creature fell from its throne.

Ah! Aaahhh…

sighing softly he scolded gently:

"Stop making a fuss, you've rolled onto the ground."

After letting out some wronged, whiny noises, he decided to reclaim his throne.

"Let me rest my head a little higher then, a little more securely…"

The pleasant tone clang once again:

"Fine."

Woah.

Not only did he not scold me, he's letting me do whatever I want.

Feeling slightly proud, he thought with a lazy, smug grin,
"This is definitely a dream. Where can I find a Lanzhan like this while awake?"

With a heart for mischief, he's at it again.
Somehow unable to resist the pull to tease..

"Can this Lanzhan please rub my shoulders too~?
My shoulders also hurt."

"Here?"

Mm~

Chuckling inwardly, he misses the warmth growing in his heart. The nearby fire is crackling softly, like a group of fair maidens shyly giggling at their intimate pose.

looking at it now..

"Ow…
My stomach hurts too~"

"Where else hurts?"

Back then i really wanted it to be true.

𝘚𝘰 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘦, 𝘌𝘳-𝘨𝘦𝘨𝘦! Weiwuxian thought, feeling all warm and mushy, watching their younger versions tangled this close together. Also, he too the grown up version is getting spoiled with, gentle rubs on his waist and a warm chest against his back..,While he grew dizzy his attentive Lanzhan noticed and brought him on his lap holding him steady, he caressed his cheeks gently that grew slightly pinkish from the cold with warm hands waiting for his lover to wake up.

"My hips hurt, and legs hurt too… it hurts everywhere."

Watching how pleased his teen self looked after being spoiled like that, he couldn’t help but chuckle and feel smug about it. After all, he gets to have that every day now. 𝘐 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘨𝘰𝘵 𝘮𝘺𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘢 𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩~, He thought with a grin. “Lan Zhan, back then, I couldn’t believe it to be true, but turns out you naughty thing were already hiding things from me!” he scolded fondly, tilting his head to look at his beloved husband’s face. "If people saw this, your cold Hanguang jun title would be over! What would people think seeing you spoiling me this sweetly, hmm?"

Before he could spout any more nonsense, he was reprimanded by a firmer squeeze on his sides. Though the affected guy in question had once said, in this very place, that he only speaks one sense.

With a sigh Lanwangji says, "Ridiculous."

Rolling his eyes, Weiwuxian just chuckles
"Pffft ridiculous it is then. I am the most ridiculous person."

"Why didn't you say so while you were awake?" The same pleasant, gentle tone nudged, sighing already on their way to massage wherever hes asked next.

Of course it was ridiculous. Who didnt already know how much Hanguang jun adored his husband? His cold-towards-everybody title has long been over.

Weiwuxian leaned into the space that Lanzhan, since long, couldn't call 'his' anymore, suddenly wanting to be even closer. His eyes are turned into happy crescents, his bright voice dropping teasingly, whispering into his ear:

"𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘮𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘶𝘱 𝘰𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘭𝘢𝘱, 𝘐 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢 𝘬𝘪𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘵𝘭𝘺, 𝘌𝘳-𝘨𝘦𝘨𝘦~" 𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘤𝘬𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘭𝘺.

Before his mischievous hands could reach his hair and expose his long since bright reddish ears, Lan Wangji catched him by his wrist and pulled them over his lap, gently rubbing his pulse point. His golden eyes gazing at his beloved fondly.

Weiwuxian glanced down where their hands lie with a raised eyebrow, grinning brightly, huffing fondly before quickly snatching the hand that was currently rubbing smooth circles over his pulse with his free hand and bringing it towards his rosy, plush lips, leaning down slightly. His grin softens into a smile feeling Lanzhan's rapid heartbeat under his own fingers.

"𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵'𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘦," he said with a sweet chuckle,"𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘳𝘦𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘯𝘰𝘸 ."

"How should I say that when awake… that's so humiliating." He complained weakly before letting out a sleepy yawn already feeling thousand pounds heavier again. For some reason he thinks, that the new scar on his chest wasn't the only reason why his chest feels so weird today. Thought he also couldn't figure out any other reason for it.

"Sleep," the gentle tone said, and somehow, lying in those warm arms, he felt safer than ever despite being locked in a cave with a dead divine beast, despite being all covered in blood, and despite not knowing what must be the cause of his heartbeat growing. Sleep found its way to him easily, he closed his eyes, replayed the same strangely comforting melody he heard, once after a life and dead situation and he felt more comfortable than in any bed in Lotus Pier.

The amused crackles echoing from the firewood fade out. The world goes dark once again, though it is no longer cold in that cave.

Before Wei Wuxian's eyes fell closed, his body already limp and heavy against Lan Wangji, the world grew cloudy once again. He couldn’t help but feel happy. It wasn’t just a dream.
