Chapter Text

The Avengers Tower briefing room hummed with quiet tension, the kind that settled into your chest without notice.

“You’re saying we should have stuck to the extraction window exactly?” Tony Stark asked, leaning back in his chair, arms crossed. “Because last I checked, improvising was kind of the Avengers’ thing.”

“Improvising doesn’t mean risking everyone,” Natasha Romanoff said, her tone flat but sharp. “Steve made a choice. One you all disagree with. That’s fine. But arguing about it now isn’t productive.”

Clint Barton rolled his eyes. “Yeah, productive would’ve been finishing the mission without all this finger-pointing.”

From the head of the sleek glass-and-steel table, Nick Fury watched quietly, one eye sharp as ever. The tension in his jaw made the already tall room feel smaller.

Steve stood at the edge of the table, hands braced lightly, shoulders squared as he fought to keep his own anxiety under control. He could feel the weight of the team on him, the anticipation, the silent judgment, and yet he focused on one thing: the civilians they’d saved.

“We saved civilians,” he said calmly, his voice measured, even. “That’s what mattered.”

Tony snorted. “And you almost got buried in the process.”

Steve’s jaw tightened. He opened his mouth to respond—words of reason, explanation, defense—but nothing came. A sudden sharp pressure pierced his ears. Faint at first, almost like a ringing bell in the distance, but then… it escalated.

He blinked rapidly. What the hell…?

Tony waved a hand. “You okay, Cap?”

Steve’s hand twitched toward his ear, his body reacting before his mind could. His pulse quickened. The pressure bloomed violently, stabbing through his skull.

Natasha glanced at him. “Steve?”

The ringing erupted, piercing, high-pitched, a scream from inside his head that had no external source.

Steve pressed his hands to his ears instinctively. The sound only grew, vicious, merciless, as though the inside of his skull had become a warzone.

“Steve, hey—” Bruce’s voice came, calm, careful, approaching him.

Steve couldn’t respond. Couldn’t hear. The ringing swallowed the world, each second a jagged knife against his eardrums.

Clint froze as he noticed Steve’s hands flying to his head. “Uh… Cap?”

Tony leaned forward. “You good, buddy?”

Steve’s eyes widened in panic. He staggered backward, swaying on the polished floor. A cold sweat slicked his temples. His vision blurred at the edges.

Natasha grabbed his arm, trying to steady him. “Steve, stay with me!”

The ringing intensified, pounding in waves. And then… a new horror.

A tiny trickle of blood appeared at the edges of his ears, dark against his pale skin. Steve froze for a split second, staring down at it, confused, alarmed, unable to comprehend how it could even be happening.

Fury’s jaw tightened. “Banner. NOW.”

Steve pressed both hands harder against his ears, instinctively trying to stop the unbearable noise. His hands were slick with sweat, the faint warmth of blood staining his fingers.

He screamed.

No words, no reason. Just raw, animalistic sound. It tore from his chest, reverberating off the Tower’s walls. The ceiling above the briefing room seemed to shiver with the force.

Natasha tightened her grip on his arms. Clint stepped back, wide-eyed, frozen mid-gesture. Tony’s mouth opened and closed, trying to find words, failing. Bruce crouched beside Steve immediately, feeling the rapid thrum of his pulse and the tremor running through his body.

Fury’s voice cut through the chaos, calm but authoritative. “Everyone stay calm. Banner, focus!”

Steve’s eyes darted wildly around the room. He tried to see faces, to grab some anchor, some reality he could cling to, but the ringing had swallowed everything. Every thought felt shredded, every nerve raw.

The scream escalated again, a high-pitched wail that seemed to vibrate inside his skull. Blood trickled further, streaking his temples, matting the strands of hair against his forehead.

His knees buckled. He toppled forward. Natasha lunged, catching him before he hit the floor, but he shivered violently in her grasp. His arms clawed at the sides of his head, still trying to escape the pain.

Fury’s one eye was sharp but concerned. “Banner. Scan him. I want to know exactly what’s happening. Now.”

The debriefing continued in the background, agents murmuring, screens flipping through tactical readouts. But to Steve, it was all muted, distant. All that existed was the internal screaming, the relentless assault in his skull, the slick warmth of blood against his ears.

Tony grabbed a tablet, waving it in front of Steve’s face. “STEVE! WE’RE HERE! FOCUS!”

Steve’s eyes tried to obey, tried to find the words, the faces, the logic—but the ringing drowned everything.

The scream tore again from his chest. Higher. Wilder. Terrifying.

Even Fury, usually unflappable, moved slightly closer, pacing, his single eye scanning Steve. Concern, quiet but real, crossed his features.

Steve collapsed fully now, Natasha bracing him against the cold floor. Blood trickled from both ears, his scalp slick, his screams still ripping through him.

And still the debriefing continued—blurred, distant, irrelevant—while the Avengers watched their leader descend into a nightmare no one could stop.

No words escaped him. Only screaming. Only the raw, terrifying evidence of someone being targeted beyond normal human limits.

Even Fury’s voice, usually steady and commanding, dropped to a quiet murmur as he surveyed the scene:

“Stay with us, Rogers… just stay with us.”
