Chapter Text
Groaning, you left your position in front of the mirror and went back to your closet, trying to hop over all the already discarded clothes thrown across the floor. You should not be this worried, all you were doing is meeting some of your friends coworkers no big deal, but for some reason your mind wouldn't let you rest.
After a dozen more outfits you finally decided on the first outfit you tried on. You look again into the mirror. You didn't look formal which was good, but not sloppy either. Satisfied, you begin to relax when your phone rings.
"Hi! I just finished my shift I'm heading over now,"
"Vic!!!" You squeal
Victoria Javadi your prodigy friend. You met when she was studying medicine late into the night at the library while you working the desk there. After falling asleep studying one day you offered to take her to coffee and after that she became part of your daily life. You were there when she needed to avoid her parents or when she had a crush. When others didn't see her because of her young age, you took her under her wing and became her older sister. And now she wanted to introduce you to her new coworkers. So she invited you along to karaoke bar with them to celebrate St Patrick's day. You were assured you weren't intruding and that your presence would be welcome. Despite this your were still nervous at being around people who are with each other so often.
"I just finished getting ready, who's all going?"
"Whitaker, Mel, Trinity, Mateo, and we finally convinced Samira to come too! Some of the doctors and nurses said they might pull up as well,"
You raised your eyebrow, Vic had already told you all about the infamous Mateo who she had asked out on her very first day. You helped her calm down after it. From what she told you you had the stinking feeling it was not as hopeless as she may think it to be.
"Mateo?"
Ignoring you she said
"Okay pulling up now,"
You open you apartment door and hurry down the steps. You see her standing outside an old Honda waving.
"Vic!"
You run over and hug her. She had changed out of her scrubs into a simple outfit, black jeans and green sweater you bought her on her 20th birthday. You hop in the car and take in the other riders. A women with dark curls, was sitting in the drivers seat. In the back of the car was who you already knew to be, Mateo, you recognized him from the pictures Vic had shown you. You saw why she liked him he had a strong build but kind eyes perfect for Vic. The guys she liked varied you always encouraged it though she deserved to have fun. In your opinion she stressed out way to much for someone so young. Her mom made it clear she disagreed.
"Hey I'm Samira, that's Mateo, it's so good to finally meet you! Javadi mentions you a lot."
" The infamous college friend who gave little Javadi her first beer," Mateo chimed in.
You chuckled at the memory, her parents might call you a bad influence at least her mom, her dad liked you okay, he knew that you were safe and wouldn't let anything go to far, plus more importantly he understood you allowed her to live a little and have break from all the med stuff happening around her all the time.
They began to go over what had happened that day. Car crashes, broken legs, the medical jargon flew over your head for the most part but you tried your best to stay active in the conversation. Finally the car pulled up to karaoke bar. You all hopped out of the car and went inside to meet up with the others.
The place was buzzing. A beautiful women with shoulder length black hair called you all over.
"Crash, over here!" She yelled
"That's Santos," Vic whispered in your ear.
You made you way over to the group who looked to be just Santos.
"Where is everyone?"
"Mel went to find a private karaoke room and huckleberry is grabbing drinks," she turned to look at you, "I'm Santos it's nice to meet the one responsible for teaching crash of the world outside books."
You laughed "it's nice to meet you too, glad someone's keeping Vic on her toes when I'm not there."
Vic huffed but you noticed she was smiling, you also noticed Mateo chuckling at smiling at her. You grinned,
"So where's this huckleberry, and where are the drinks he's to bring?"
"That would be me," you swivel your head to see a bronze curly haired guy with tired eyes. He had strong build which was not covered up by his blue sweater. You looked over his strong biceps and tried to figure out what at the hospital he was lifting. You looked back up to his eyes only to see them looking right back you, there was a curiosity in them like he had so much he wanted to know, about you or in general you weren't sure. You knew he had to be Dennis Whitaker. The sweet farm boy from Nebraska Vic had told you about. You just didn't realize he would be so good looking. He was either quiet or also at loss of word because neither of you spoke once you made eye contact. Your trance was broken by the arrival of you assume to be Mel. A cheery lady with glasses and a braid. She was partly still in her scrubs like Samira and you assumed they had a shift more recently then the others.
"I found a room!" She announced
"I'm Mel by the way"
"Nice to meet you," you reply introducing yourself.
The group starts to follow Mel's lead toward the room. You find yourself lagging behind just a bit, huckleberry does the same. Your footsteps quiet easily fell into time with each other. You were glad to be by him. Something about him made you want to spend hours on end confessing every little thing about yourself. He seemed safe. But that made you a little nervous too. You did not need a fling right now that would be the opposite of good, especially with one of Vics coworkers. Once there's a bit of space in between you and the rest of the group he introduces himself.
"I'm Dennis by the way," his looking up at you form the corner of his eye.
As you tell him your name you can't help but be grateful that Vic had convinced you to come, because this Dennis seems exactly like the type of person you would want to know.
