Skeeter Trouble

Summary:

In homage of the 1959 Huckleberry Hound short of the same name, Petunia Pig takes it easy in the great outdoors. However, hijinks caused by a pesky mosquito makes it difficult for her to do so.

Notes:

Hey, folks. I figure I write this story inspired by my favorite Huckleberry Hound cartoon segment. Although this is going to be looney, I'll do my best effort to keep the story close to the funtastic source of the original material. Thanks and enjoy.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Our cartoon begins with Petunia Pig enjoying the great outdoors as she drove her wagon across the campgrounds. The forest is what we should expect being that it was lush and full of wildlife free from the struggles of interference from mankind. The pig wearing her yellow shirt and skirt sighed to herself as she searched for the campsite.
“Oh goody. Relaxing in the great outdoors. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Now where’s the campgrounds anyway?”, Petunia wondered looking for her destination. She spotted a blue hound wearing a camper’s outfit hiking singing a familiar tune.
“Oh my darlin’. Oh my darlin’. Oh my darlin’ Clementine!”, the blue dog with a Southern drawl sang off-key much to Petunia’s chagrin as her ears flopped like a dog’s to ease her dismay.
“Jeepers, ain’t he a professional crooner. Anyway, maybe he’ll help me.”, Petunia said rolling her window down to flag him over. “Excuse me. Can you help a lady out, please?
“Golly, miss. Are you lost. I’ll help you to where you need to go. I’m Huckleberry Hound by the way, ma’am.”, Huckleberry said as Petunia nodded with a smile.
“Thank you. I’m looking for the campsite. I’m kind of lost.”, the sheepish pig said nervously.
“No worries. Just turn right and follow the moss side of the trees. That’s north. Hope it helps.”, Huck said with Petunia smiling now having the directions needed for her destination. She lets out a warm giggle thanking the blue dog.
“Perfect. Thanks, Huckleberry. I better get going before it gets too dark.”, Petunia drove away waving to Huck who tipped his hat.
“No problem. And have a good trip.”, Huckleberry said smiling. However, he was puzzled like he forgotten to tell Petunia something. “Did I forget to tell her that there are slews of skeeeters around? Golly.”
--
And so, Petunia found a camping spot and managed to set up camp. The eager pig tried pitching up the tent. However, it was a struggle for the tent’s covering twirled and wrapped around Petunia like a mummy. She landed on the ground muffling to get out. Once she did, the pig sheepishly grinned at the folly made.
“Talk about pigs in a blanket but this is ridiculous. Let’s try again.”, Petunia said before trying again two more times until she perfectly pitched it. She wiped the sweat off her forehead satisfied of her handiwork.
“Well, that takes care of it. Now for a lawn chair. Hmm. Now where did I put it?”, Petunia wondered searching for the needed the item. She rummaged in her wagon’s hatch finding the Devil’s armchair causing Petunia to gulp.
“Now how that get in there?”, the Pig said flabbergasted only for Taz and his dad Hugh to show up.
“So that’s where my chair went. Say, miss. Thanks for finding it. Well, son. Let’s head back home for this isn’t our cartoon. Blah, blah, blah. Yackery-smackety.”, the older Tasmanian devil told Taz who left the scene. Petunia scratched her head in confusion but shrugged. She finally pulled out an ACME lawn chair
“Perfect. Now let’s see. AAAAH!!”
“GRRR! AROWF! ROWF!”, the lawn chair said snapping like a dog chasing Petunia around her campsite. The Pig squeale for it to stop as the chair tried to bite her on the butt. However, Petunia had to treat it like a dog in order to get somewhere. She stood firm and pointed at the growling chair.
“Bad chair! Bad, bad, bad! Now sit!”, Petunia commanded while the lawn chair acted like a real chair as Petunia smiled. “Good girl.”
After Petunia’s chaotic set up of the camp, she relaxed on her lawn chair taking in what nature had to offer. She took a deep sigh of content. She watched the blue skies exhibiting calmness and stillness. The birds were chirping and the squirrels were fighting like mobsters and talked like them too.
“Now this is more like it. Just take it in and relax.”, Petunia said relaxing showing off her figure on the chair. Nearby, a sneaky mosquito was flying by to search for it’s next meal. However, it was In luck when it spotted Petunia smiling in bliss. The mosquito wolfwhistled and snickered in the vain of Muttley from Wacky Races. It smirked flying near Petunia’s face eyeing her blissful look.
The mosquito flipped a coin out of nowhere to determine whether to go for her face or her arm. Once the coin landed on heads, the pesky bloodsucker snickered landing on the pig’s short snout. Once It did, it tried to sting the bridge of her snout only for the stinger to bend not penetrating . The mosquito groaned muttering something grumpily.
“Shashem-rashem-fashem, useless stinger.”, the mosquito growled. It pulled out a spare stinger which was much better than the tock. It unscrewed it’s old proboscis and screwed in the new one in it’s place. It then flew upwards hovering over Petunia’s snout and zipped on it poinking successfully like a jackhammer.
“OWW! OUCH! That hurts!”, Petunia yelped in pain holding her snout. However, the mosquito’s snickering didn’t go unnoticed for the pig glared at the source placing her hands on her hips.
“What’s the big idea? Hurting a Poor girl like that. That’s not very nice.”, Petunia firmly said to the mosquito. The insect quickly jabbed it’s proboscis onto her snout and arms making her yell and scream. The chase ensued until she tripped onto a hollow log. The log sprang up in the air and Petunia gets up from her fall looking up at a shadow.
“This can’t get any worse.”, she muttered only for the log to swallow her up as it rolled into a tree. Petunia screamed kicking her legs as they were the only onees visible.
“Help! Somebody help! Get me out of here! Maybe eating those cakes went to my hams. At least the mosquito’s nowhere in sight.”
Wrong Petunia was for the mosquito hovered over Petunia’s butt as the Insect wolfwhistled watching it jiggle. Before Petunia knew it, the mosquito got his woman and made a bulls-eye mark on her rear before stinging there making her yelp in pain squealing. The mosquito snickered and laughed it’s thorax off at the Pig’s misfortunes.
“Ooooh, when I get my hands on him, he wouldn’t be so lucky.”, Petunia grumbled narrowing her eyes in irritation and slight anger.
--
Petunia somehow got herself out of the log and went to her chair with a bottle of cream. Petunia read it’s contents in hopes of fending off the pesky insect.
“Hmm, ACME Buzz Off Repellent. Just what I needed. Now to butter myself up with it.”, Petunia smiled enthusiastically slathering the cream onto her face, torso, back and before she did so, she smirked at her accomplishment. “Mosquitoes definitely hate this stuff. Huh? WHAT THE?!”
Petunia yelled in shock seeing the same mosquito now wearing a napkin slurping up the goop out the container. It licked it’s lips not affected at all puzzling Petunia. The pig crossing her arms disapprovingly rolling her eyes at the gourmand.
“Hmph. And they say us pigs are greedy. Little glutton.”, Petunia shook her head at the faulty merchandise ACME was known for. “Note to self, never buy anything from ACME ever again.”
--
It was getting dusk as the pig went into her tent after hiking up the trail taking In the views and went fishing only to get beans. All and all, the pig was relieved that the pesky mosquito was out of sight. She placed on an eyemask wearing curlers on her head relaxing.
“Now this is more like it. There’s no way that mosquito’s coming in here. Besides, insects don’t even know how to open up tents. Hee-hee.”, she giggled. She went to rest up free of the mosquito. Or is she?
The mosquito spotted the tent grumbling figuring out a way to get into the tent. It paced back and forth frustrated until a lightbulb came on. It snickered flying near the side of the tent and pulled out a portable door and slapped it onto the side of the tent. It opened the door showing Petunia’s content face. The eager mosquito smirked hovering over the entrance the doorway made aiming it’s proboscis onto the pig’s arm. The insect takes form and dive bombs smiling evilly poinking the target making the pig scream in pain while the assailant stung her in her arms and face. The dustcloud cleared up revealing mosquito bites red on the surface with Petunia having bruised eyes. She unzipped the tent crawling out of there looking like she seen better days.
“That mosquito’s done lost it. No matter, I’ll outsmart him yet.”, Petunia said smirking for yet another plan.
--
Petunia after patching up with the first aid kit relaxed onto her chair wearing a bucket over her head. The pig chuckled smiling to herself thinking that might be the end of the torture.
“Let’s see him come at me now. That’ll teach him.”, Petunia giggled before relaxing under the bucket. The mosquito again snickered thinking how dopey his victim is being right now. The pesky insect smiled placing a buzzsaw attachment on his nose after flying on top of the bucket. It cuts a hole of the bucket before changing his nose into a sharp needle. It smiled eyeing the snout hungrily and hits on the mark.
“EEEEEE!”, Petunia screamed due to not only getting her snout stung again. But she couldn’t take it anymore. She got mad wondering where that mosquito went to. She had skull and crossbones in her eyes confirming to wish pain on that insect. However, she giggled for she felt something inside her head.
She heard buzzing as we get a close up to her face. The insect flew across her eyes feeling irritated. It realized it was trappd and Petunia smiled torturing him. After a while, the mosquito opened the door on top of her snout glaring confusing Petunia.
“Sashem-rashem-fashem-chicken-lckin-frickin.”, the mosquito muttered agitated.
“Hey, that’s not very nice.”, Petunia chastised only for the mosquito to tomp his foot and took off leaving an angered pig.
--
“Hmph. Well I never.Who does he think he is? Maybe going to a cabin would do me some good.”, Petunia said to herself hoping that staying in a cabin would keep the mosquito from pestering her any further. However, a mosquito whizzed past her snickering making Petunia frown.
“Well that’s just great. That pesky bug never gives up.”, she muttered before heading near her destination. Once she was at the cabin, the pig hung out at the patio of the property with a content smile on her face.
“Ah, this is perfect. It’s sunny even in the forest, a pig can’t afford to get sunburn.”, Petunia said pulling out a sunscreen bottle. However, little did she know was that the pesky mosquito swapped out her sunblock for a bottle of honey. The insect snickered and quickly and stealthily watched his victim. Petunia dipped her hands into the bottle and slathered some on her arms, legs and face. She had a puzzled look on her face and sniffed something odd.
“Is it me or does this sunblock smell funny? Sticky, even.”, Petunia wondered. Suddenly, buzzing came about irritating Petunia.
“It better not be anymore mosquitoes. The pesky things.”, she grumbled only for the buzzing and a dark cloud full of different insects caught her attention as her eyes widened in fright. “Wait a minute. That’s not mosquitoes. They’re—”
BZZZZZ!!!
“BEES!”
Petunia screamed seeing the swarm of bees ready to give her the heavy stinging of her life. She ran from the patio dodging logs, rocks until she spotted some water in a form of the lake. Petunia then gulped still wearing her skirt and shirt.
“Great. I forgot to change into my bathing suit. Oh well.”, she remarked before jumping underwater. This made the bees stay airborne waiting for the pig to rise up.
Petunia managed to get away from the swarm but she knew that staying underwater too long can have dire consequences. On the other hand, rise up too soon and get stung to death. Either way, her bacon’s fried.
“Whew. At least, those bees can’t swim. Now I can relax underwater. And the best part is no mosquitoes.”, the pig said relaxing but her tranquility was interrupted by a silhouette of an alligator swimming towards her.
“Holy moly! Alligators! So much for relaxation. I’m going to be the gator’s other white meat. I don’t look good in pea soup.”, Petunia huddered as she swam up the surface. “Glad I’m part Swimming Pig in my blood.”
Once she made it to the surface, an alligator with a porkpie hat, collar and tie appeared. He was confused seeing where Petunia once sat.
“Gee whiz. Ain’t she a shy one. Say, I’m definitely enjoyin’ this kind of cartoon. Gotta keep my relevance up, ya know.”, the gator noted in a voice reminiscent of Ed Winn.
--
Petunia is now running from the returning swarm after swimming up to the surface. The pig yelled only for her to trip onto the rock falling on her face as she moaned. She then tried to sit up looking battered with a goofy smile.
“Well isn’t this a perfect analogy? My camping trip on the rocks.”, Petunia babbled but a looming shadow casted over the pig. “Who turned down the sun? Oh dear.”
Before Petunia knew, the bees were dive bombing at her with screaming, yelling, stinging and biting in the dust filled clouds. Boy, did she received a beatdown.
“Golly, I sure feel bad for anyone ticking off a swarm. Better steer clear if I know what’s good for me.”, Huckleberry said unaware that Petunia was the victim of the angry swarm. The blue hound quickly scurried away before he became the next one. It didn’t take long for the stinging to finish up. The bees flew away leaving a bruised, battered and a sting riddled pig. Petunia weakily got up on her feet and groaned in pain.
“Owwww. That sunscreen I had was faulty. A sting of attraction.”, Petunia muttered but she heard the snickering from the mosquito who was the culprit for doing such a thing to her.
“You! When I get my hands on you!”, Petunia growled only for her to trip and land on her face knocked out. The mosquito just laughed and zoomed away.
--
The last ditch effort coming from Petunia was a spray from ACME called Skeetersol. It’s a spray as you could imagine, sends the mosquitoes to the Upper Room. The smiling pig giggled to herself pulling out the can in hopes of taking out that pesky bloodsucker. Speaking of him, that mosquito buzzed in Petunia’s direction in order to bite her once more. However, Petunia’s evil smile says otherwise for the spray nozzle shot right at the flying creature. The spray cloud slowed the mosquito’s flight and he gagged dramatically but he sighed before fainting to the ground. Right at Petunia’s feet, the mosquito fainted wiggling a bit.
“Hooray! That takes care of him. Now I can relax finally.”, Petunia chirped before punting the pesky insect away. She then went into the cabin’s patio smiling placing on her sunglasses.
The mosquito woke up quickly from the humiliation Petunia gave him and was upset. He grumbled pacing back and forth but pulled out a trumpet from thin air. He blew on it signaling for help. After a few seconds did his flying fellow bloodsuckers arrive like fighter pilots with their sharp proboscis out angered and ready to get their target. Speaking of, Petunia was resting soundly until the angry buzzing drew closely.
“Now what? YIPE!”, Petunia’s eyes bug out at the sight of angry swarms of mosquitoes coming for her. The pig squealed and ran inside the cabin in hopes of escape. She successfully locked the doors and rested against the door only for little stingers from the pissed off bloodsuckers to penetrate the door like knives. Thankfully, they didn’t pierce her in the process.
Freaked out by their tenacity, Petunia ran and got a hammer and hit the stingers like nails until they are stuck. She wiped the sweat off her brow in relief.
“Well, that oughta do the trick.”, Petunia noted but gasped when the might of the insects pulled the door off the hinges. “You got to be kidding me!”
Petunia ran out the back and jumped into an inflatable raft in hopes of getting away. She paddled aggressively from the swarm but little did she know was that the same mosquito from earlier smirked evilly aiming at the inflatable. Petunia then noticed him and glared dangerously after the insect snickered.
“You wouldn’t dare.”, the pig said narrowing her eyes. But the insect laughed and poked a hole into the raft causing her to sink.
Petunia was then sitting at the bottom of the lake away from the lake. She was relieved that the mosquitoes at least didn’t come down here. The Pig tried to enjoy herself only to be flabbergasted.
“Are they for real?”, Petunia muttered dryly seeing mosquitoes in scuba gear ready to get her. In quick fashion, Petunia just ran out the lake and in unreal seconds packed all her stuff and drove out the campsite in her station wagon.
“Next time, I’m going to Hawaii. This camping business isn’t for me.”, Petunia remarked at the viewers. Huckleberry nearby spotted the pig leaving and had an amused look on his face.
“Talk about déjà vu.”, the blue hound remarked before the story concluded.

That’s all folks!

Notes:

And that's Skeeter Trouble, folks. It's one of my favorite Hanna-Barbera cartoon shorts as a kid. Hope I did this justice by having Petunia Pig fulfill Huck's role. Speaking of, I figure I have Huckleberry Hound guest star since it pays homage to the same short he starred in. Taz and his dad Hugh in their Taz-Mania incarnation make a brief cameo and Wally Gator from another HB show titled Wally Gator appears here as well. And the mosquito snickering behaves a bit like Muttley from Wacky Races.
