There have been better days

Summary:

Tommy can’t fit in

Notes:

I don’t know what possessed me to write this but my writers block disappeared and this just came out of nowhere
Anyway this is a new writing style I was trying out (by accident, as most things happen hehe)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Tommy has two brothers.

Technoblade and Wilbur.

They're twins, but Wilbur always insists that he's older than Techno.  Tommy knows Techno's older, he's seen their birth certificates before. He doesn't argue back though, content to listen to them bicker through the entirety of breakfast.

Techno's in college, studying an english major. Tommy knows Techno's english is good, because he has seen him write before, in that beautiful and elegant cursive. Techno doesn't show it to anyone. Tommy's only got a few glimpses, here and there, but he can tell he'll make a good writer. Wilbur's the opposite, everything Techno's isn't. He may not be able to write an essay to save his life, but he can write lines of poetry and music, coming from places where Tommy would have never thought possible. Instead of following an academic path, Wilbur skipped college to pursue music. He's got a band called Lovejoy, and they've released a couple of songs. Tommy won’t tell him this, but he listens to them sometimes. Wilbur would grin at him if he knew, ruffle his hair, and make him look like a mess.

Techno and Wilbur are like a puzzle piece. They fit together perfectly, complementing each other.

(Why can't he be more like them?)

Tommy has a father.

His name is Phil.

He works at an engineering firm downtown.

There's not much Tommy knows about Phil. He's always working, and comes back home really late.

Tommy knows that Phil works hard for the family and that he should work harder too.

(He can't.)

Tommy does not have a mother.

She died when Tommy was only 4.

Tommy does not remember her face.

What he does remember though, is the feeling of arms cradling him gently, as if he were made of glass.

Wilbur often reminisces about her while strumming his guitar.

He says her name was Kristin.

(Tommy thinks that's a beautiful name.)

Wilbur looks at Tommy then, and tilts his head, his tinted glasses dropping slightly to reveal his brown eyes. He frowns slightly, before wiping it from his face, pretending that it was never there. "You have mom's smile," he always says, as if that was the only thing they had in common.

When Tommy walks down the hall, he always sees pictures of a woman on the walls. She has Wilbur's eyes, Techno's long, wavy hair. And his smile, he supposes.

When Tommy returns to his room after, he stands in front of the mirror,  and attempts to smile. That smile does not match the woman in the picture at all.

He does not look like his mother.

(He never has.)

Tommy has two friends.

Tubbo and Ranboo.

All three of them go to the same school, and the same class.

Tubbo's loud. Ranboo's quiet.

Together, they balance each other out.

Tommy's loud too.

There is no one to stop him from getting into trouble, no one to calm him down when he starts talking too loudly.

The teachers adore Tubbo and Ranboo. Say that they are the perfect match for each other, that they are meant to be together.

They point fingers at Tommy.

What a troublemaker.

Tubbo wants to be a Software Engineer when he grows up. He's surprisingly good with computers. Ranboo tells Tommy that Tubbo has mastered Data Structures and Algorithms as a beginner. Tommy congratulates Tubbo without knowing what that means. Ranboo wants to be a Floral Designer. He loves caring for plants. Tommy knows his favourite flower are Alliums. Tubbo gave him some for his birthday.

Tommy doesn't know what he'll do when he grows up. He has no plans for his future.

When Tommy tells Tubbo this, he always smiles weakly and pats him on the shoulder. "It's okay, bossman. You'll find something you're good at soon enough."

He gets good at something.

If getting more and more calls from his teachers home about his failing subjects counts.

(Why does he never fit in?)

Tommy does not have anyone.

His brothers are fixated on their own lives now. Techno has his college end-of-year exams to look forward to. Wilbur has his own career he needs to look after.

His father was never here from the start.

Neither was his mother.

Tubbo and Ranboo start drifting away from him.

He's too different, he supposes.

This is what he's become.

And it's all his fault.

He's all alone now.

(Will they come back?)

No.

Tommy doesn't think they'll come back anytime soon.
