Work Text:

There are some things that Sirius loves about James and there are other things that he’s not too thrilled with.

One of those things that he doesn’t much care for is his insistence that they celebrate every possible milestone in their lives – particularly, their dating life.

“I just don’t get why it matters, Jay,” Sirius offers when James begins freaking out about not being able to determine when their first sleepover was.

He wasn’t sure because they’d had sleepovers long before they’d gotten together, but apparently it was a big deal to James.  Another milestone to celebrate.

“Because milestones matter, Si.  If we don’t know when things happened, how are we supposed to celebrate them?”

“We don’t,” Sirius states.

“You don’t want to celebrate our relationship?” James asks, unbelievingly.  Crossing his arms and looking hurt.  “I thought you loved me – loved us?”

“I do love you, I love us,” Sirius assures him.  “I’ve never been happier than being with you.”

“Then why don’t you want to celebrate us?”

“I want to celebrate us –”

James makes a face and Sirius huffs.  “Really, I do, but I don’t need any stupid reasons to celebrate us like a first sleepover or anything else that’s dumb.  All I need is a single anniversary and just enjoy being with you every day – that’s it.  I don’t need a million dates to remember and find presents for.”

James huffs and sits on the bed, still looking a bit upset.

“Everyone else celebrates milestones.”

“Because they’re not in it for the long-haul,” Sirius offers because he knows it’s true.  People stop celebrating silly milestones when they know that they’re in it forever and it’s dumb to celebrate all the little things on specific days when you can just celebrate your person whenever.

James is still frowning, so Sirius takes a breath and grabs his hand as he says, “I’d rather get to celebrate once a year on a specific day and then spend the rest of the year just celebrating the little things when I want to shower you with love.”

James’ frown melts away.  “So, you’re not looking to not celebrate, just… not need specific celebrations?”

“Exactly.  I wanna just be in the mood for it.  I want to randomly bring you flowers.  I want to see something in the store and buy it for just because.  I don’t want to be forced to find something that says we had a sleepover or we had our first kiss of ten thousand kisses when I could do it more randomly.  It feels more genuine that way.”

James hums.  “I suppose that makes sense.”

“So, that sounds like a plan, then?”

James nods and gives him a sweet kiss.  “Yeah, that sounds – brilliant.”

“Good.”
