Summary
The burning in Jay’s face is enough to make him itchy. He can’t identify the emotion behind it. It’s indignation and it’s mortification and it’s a new word ending in -ation no one has ever felt in history before called ‘Matt is talking about having a shitty girlfriend and that’s me’. He keeps his tight fists at his sides and his jaw clenched and Matt holds his gaze but he breathes like Jay just sent him for a race. And maybe Jay wants a race now.
It's 2008. Matt's a little bit drunk. Jay's a little bit high.

Jay does. He looks up at Matt. It feels all too natural, looking up at him. From the seat at the piano. From bed when he decides Jay's slept long enough. From this same couch when Jay makes him go get his own snacks in between Mario Kart races. With his latest stupid joke. With his hair cut like shit. With his leg against Jay's hard-on. Jay's admiration has Matt spilled all over it and soaking onto every other thing he loves. Making that list grow at every turn. So whenever Jay looks at Matt, he looks up.
He can't say all that, though. But Matt stares back like he's trying to confess something equally big. It's like being kids and sleeping in two beds and holding hands to see if you'll magically dream the same thing. They never tried that, obviously, but Jay can recall a time or two where they did wake up from impossibly similar dreams. Just weird shit. Their brain connection feels more insane in retrospect. But here it is, at work again, so Jay will let it wash over him, and he'll blink and he'll know and so will Matt and no one has to say much else.
