Chapter Text

The Confession

If there was anything Iruka knew Kakashi by, it was his horrendous mission reports. Today's mission report that Kakashi was bringing was no different being 2 weeks late and looking like a toddler scribbled on it.

He opened the door to the mission room and cheerfully walked over to Iruka without even bothering to open his eye.

Iruka-sensei's going to be so mad, hee-hee.

"Yo, Iruka-sensei" Kakashi holds out the mission report and opens his eyes to an Iruka who was practically smoking from the ears. Iruka glares at him and he takes on a more empathetic tone. "What happened to you?"

Izumo leans over and whispers to Kakashi as he pulls his report back towards himself, "He just fended off a particularly unruly Jonin... We only narrowly avoided a fist fight."

At that Kakashi starts to sweat a little and Iruka speaks up. "So Kakashi-san.."

He sound so pissed, I'm screwed.

"Is this a legitimate report, or are you going to piss me off more." By his tone you could tell he was going to lose his temper if there was anything wrong with his report and to this Kakashi starts sweating more.

I scribbled on it! I scribbled on it specifically to piss him off! I'm so screwed!

"Okay well, it's not an actual report but... Just open it in your own time, alright?" Kakashi says looking away and sounding all too nervous.

Iruka looks at Kakashi questioningly before opening the report.

HE OPENING IT ANYWAY?!

Then to Kakashi's surprise Iruka starts turning redder and redder.

Wait...

"Iruka, what are you reading..."

It was just scribbles... Right?

Kakashi leans over to see as Iruka buries his burning face in his palm.

Oh shit. This is my confession letter. Not my mission report.

Kakashi's face starts warming as Iruka speaks, "My shift ends at 7:00. I'll be at Ichiraku's." He glances up at Kakashi who has backed away. "Okay?"

"Okay." Kakashi replies.

"Great."

"Yup. Great." Kakashi says turning to leave.

"See you then."

"Yeah, see you." Kakashi glances back fondly and Iruka places his hand on his cheek and smiles.

As Kakashi leaves Kotetsu and Izumo swarm Iruka.

Later...

Kakashi arrives at his apartment, takes his uniform off, and removes his mask to reveal his still flushed before summoning Pakkun. "Pakkun"

"Yes boss?"

"Why did you exchange the scrolls?" Kakashi asks looking at Pakkun suspiciously and squinting his eye at him.

"I don't know what you're talking about" Pakkun looks away.

"Don't lie to me, Pakkun" Kakashi stares at him more intensely.

"Listen you've been pining for the guy since forever. I'm doing you a favor."

"Yes, but I had a whole plan..." Kakashi hits his forehead on the table and raises his arms above his head.

"Oh grow up."

Kakashi sighs and looks at the clock. "I have to get ready to meet him at Ichiraku's."

"See, I did you a favor, you managed to get a date with the guy."

"Shut up." Kakashi stands up to walk to his bedroom.

"You owe me 10 steaks." And with that Pakkun leaves.

Kakashi walks into his bedroom, opens the closet, and looks for something nice to where. A suit seems like too much, maybe just a T-Shirt it something would do. He grabs a T-shirt with a dog graphic on it and puts it on before looking in the mirror on his closet door. He pulls a new mask over his bare face.

Hitae-ate or no hitae-ate, hmmm?

He grabs a bandana, folds it neatly, and then replaces his hitae-ate with the bandana.

Hmph, perfect.

First Date

Kakashi arrives at Ichiraku's at 7:00 P.M. on the dot. The only time he will ever be on time. He takes a seat and waits for Iruka to arrive from his shift.

"Yo! Kakashi-san!"

Kakashi turns around to see Iruka in a T-Shirt with the Hidden Leaf Symbol on it and...

Oh my Iruka's bare forehead, I could just kiss it.

"Hey sensei. Please just Kakashi though." Kakashi pats the seat to his left.

"Not your teacher." Iruka sits down on the seat and looks at Teuchi, the old man running the shop. "Teuchi-san, 2 bowls or Ichiraku Ramen please." Teuchi nods and begins preparing their food.

"Sooo..." Kakashi taps his mask nervously.

"You look nice tonight Kakashi."

"Uh-uhm- You too! You look really cute."

FUCK! I'M RUINING MY CHANCES! GET YOURSELF TOGETHER KAKASHI SUKUMO HATAKE!

Iruka blushes a little. "Thank you."

"Heheh yeah..." Kakashi looks over at Iruka and they end up staring at each other. "Has anyone ever told you that you have beautiful eyes."

"Uhm.. no."

"Well you do."

Before either of them realize it their hands brush against each other causing both of them to blush harder.

"Here's your food and don't worry about the bill, on the house for the two lovebirds." Teuchi sets two bowls down and turns around to let them have their moment in peace.

LOVEBIRDS!?!

"Heheh, hope you don't mind if I eat this all so quickly because of the mask and all." Kakashi says awkwardly.

"Oh yeah! Of course, of course." Iruka turns away slightly as Kakashi eats his bowl quickly.

Pulling his mask back up Kakashi gently turns Iruka's head back to face him. "I'm done now Iruka."

A light pink dusting covers Iruka's face. "Yeah! Alright." Iruka begins eating his ramen and Kakashi can't help but stare just a little. "So, it mentioned you having liked me for a while, how long exactly?"

"Uhm, well I met you when I was 22... I'm now 29 so 7 years."

Iruka nearly chokes on his Ramen. "7 YEARS? IT TOOK YOU SEVEN YEARS TO TELL ME?!"

"Yes." Kakashi says, quite pathetically at that.

"I've liked you for 5 years."

"You liked me back... almost the entire time."

Iruka sighs and pushes back his empty bowl. "Yeah."

"I should have confessed sooner and on purpose."

"Wait... On purpose, did you acci-"

Kakashi cuts him off. "That's for me to know and you to find out."

Iruka doesn't push further as the two men get up from their seats. Kakashi clears his throat.

"Yes, Kakashi?" Iruka glances over at Kakashi who is holding his hand out.

"Thought I might walk you home tonight. " Kakashi scratches his mask and looks away. "Unless you don't want me to."

"Ah, ah. Of course." Iruka says quickly as he grabs Kakashi's hand.

I'M HOLDING HIS HAND!

2 Months Since Their 1st Date

Iruka's standing in his kitchen preparing coffee one sunny morning. It was so peaceful... Until Kakashi crashed through his window.

"IRUKAAAAAA!" Kakashi, with all the energy of a pre-genin, rushes over to Iruka and captures him in his arms. "Guess what?"

"Can I at least get some coffee first?" Iruka rubs his eyes. "I just woke up."

"Maa, sweetie, I can see that." Kakashi releases Iruka and steps back taking in the sight fully. Iruka's hair is down, forehead bare, in a random T-shirt and sweatpants, his eyes have bags underneath them, and he's slouched in a way that he'd never be in public. "Not the point though, Naruto comes back today. Should I explain or you?"

If only I could wake up to a sight like this.

"Coffee first, chatting later." Iruka grabs his coffee cup after his coffee finally finishes brewing and walks over to the couch with a very happy Kakashi in tow and then just plops down. Kakashi takes a seat next to him and starts playing with Iruka's hair as he starts drinking his coffee. "So, are you sure we have to tell him Kakashi, we've only been dating for 2 months."

"And yet most the village is gossiping about it, better he learns from us then them, imagine how betrayed he'd feel. Also, 2 months is a long time."

"Fine." Kakashi wraps his arm around him. "Can I enjoy my morning in peace now."

"Maybe," Kakashi draws out that first syllable in a teasing way. "But before I leave may I do something real quick."

"What is it?"

"Close your eyes."

Iruka reluctantly closes his eyes and Kakashi pulls his mask down. Slowly and carefully he brushes Iruka's hair off his forehead before leaning in and lightly kissing him on the forehead then pulls his mask back up.

"You can open your eyes now." Kakashi tucks some hair behind Iruka's ear before standing up and jumping right out of the window he previously broke. "I'LL PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT FEE!"

"KAKASHI!!!"

4 Months Since Their First Date

"Are you sure?" Iruka asks hesitantly. "This place is pretty expensive."

"Maa, baby, I'll be paying." Kakashi places his fingertip on Iruka's nose. "Don't you worry your pretty little head about it."

They walk into a high-end restaurant and not exactly the place one would find a broke Academy teacher with his jonin boyfriend. A young woman waves them over to a table for two and hands them a menu.

"Everything's so... Expensive," Iruka looks up at Kakashi, "Why did you bring me here exactly?"

"Is it so bad to want to go on a date with my handsome boyfriend without the interference off my friends?" Kakashi lowers his eyelids and looks through his long lashes. "Plus, you deserve everything I can give you."

"Cut the bullshit, why did you actually bring me here?" Iruka asks seeing through his, albeit good, lying.

"I'm going on a mission that'll take about a month, I leave tomorrow. I'm going to miss you."

The young lady walks over two there table before Iruka can respond. "Are y'all two ready to order?"

"Of course." Kakashi responds before telling her his order then waits for Iruka to follow suit. He just orders the same as Kakashi did. "Thanks Miss."

6 Months Since Their First Date

"Are you sure honey?"

"Yes Kakashi." Iruka said without wavering in the slightest.

"Alright, just know my apartment is going to be a bit cramped between the two of us." Kakashi places his hand on Iruka's face and starts caressing his cheek. "I'll help you gather your stuff to move in."

"No need, I already dropped my stuff off by your apartment this morning." Kakashi freezes. "I knew you'd let me move in."

Classic Iruka always knowing my next move.

"Of course you did, love." Kakashi pulls his mask down and kisses Iruka's forehead before pulling his mask back off. "So shall we walk home?"

Iruka nods and they walk home without another word.

"Luckily for you I already unpacked my stuff." Iruka says as he opens the apartment door.

8 Months After The First Date-Pain's Assault

Kakashi had died. Iruka had heard this already so how was he here in front of him? He didn't care about the answer, all he cared about was Kakashi was here. He ran, tears falling from his eyes, and practically jumped into Kakashi's arms.

"Ka-" Kakashi cuts him off.

"Shh, calm down honey. I'm back. I'm alive." That was all Iruka needed to hear.

They could've stood there forever in each other's embrace if there weren't things to do. Things to do. Things to do.

20 Months After The First Date

It was over. The war was over. Finally over.

"KAKASHI! IT'S OVER!" Iruka said as he embraced the surprisingly conscious Kakashi.

"Finally." Kakashi whispers.

21 Months After The First Date

Kakashi had become Hokage and they were both aware of how this complicated things.

"Maaa, babe, they're making ME, your idiot boyfriend, hokage. This village is surviving another year." Kakashi complains in Iruka lap as he strokes his grey hair. "I'm going to go grey early, I'm only 32."

"You were born grey." Iruka points out.

He didn't even mention me calling myself an idiot, does he really think I am an idiot?

"Then I'll get wrinkles early, I won't look good with wrinkles, and what about us when I assume my duties?! You know how this complicates things, the council would rather blow the village up then let the future hokage date a Chunin academy teacher!"

"I don't think they care that much about rank difference."

"Yes, well they surely won't like the idea of their Hokage dating a dude, they're traditional traditional."

"That might be a problem." Iruka pauses his hair stroking. "But who cares."

"Me."

"Don't."

24 Months After The First Date

"Hun, it's our 2 year anniversary so why not we go to the restaurant that started it all."

"Ichiraku's?" Iruka questions.

"Precisely, now come on."

"Aren't you supposed to be busy Kakashi?" Iruka says standing up from his spot on the couch.

"Maaa, my clone can handle." Kakashi grabs Iruka's hand between his. "Now come on."

"Alright, alright. I'm coming."

The Proposal

They arrived at Ichiraku's. Kakashi was more eager than usual but how could he not. He was nervous and excited and anxious and overjoyed and everything all at once like he would explode of everything he felt.

The moment came as Iruka had just finished eating. To Kakashi there was no more of a perfect moment. His knee hut the ground before Iruka could process what was happening.

This was it. Iruka's decision here would shape everything in Kakashi's little world.

"Iruka, since the day I meant you there's always been something about you that's drawn me in. I'm not sure whether it was your disregard for rank at the mission desk, your heart full of compassion, your bravery in protecting those you love, your ferocity when dealing with annoying jonin like me, your care for your students or even all of this plus more that made me love you but no matter the reason, I love you."

He pulls a box from his pocket. This was it. This was the moment.

"I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want to commit myself to you, to us, for as long as I may live. I want to be by your side in sickness and in health. I want to be with you throughout the lowest and the highest points of our lives. I want to work through the challenges that life throws our way by your side because I love you."

Kakashi open the small box to reveal a simple but charming ring that was just Iruka's size. This was it. He was going to do it. He felt like he was bursting at the seams with excitement and nervousness.

"So, I guess this is my asking, Iruka, will you marry me and embark on this new journey through life with me?"

A pause. Nervousness and anxiety gather in his gut and swirl around in a nauseating way.

Is he going to say no? I probably look like such a fool right now. What if I did the for n-

"YES, I WILL MARRY YOU!" Iruka wraps his arms around Kakashi before stepping back again as Kakashi grabs his hand gently and slips the ring on his finger  before getting off his knee and hugging Iruka back. "This is really happening."

This really is happening.
