Chapter Text
The bright fluorescent lights beamed down onto Maddison’s face as she walked into the emergency department, the scene before her felt oddly like the one she had left behind in New York but didn't exactly fit right in her memory. The layout slightly different, the faces of people bustling past her didn't hold any sort of sentiment to her, and no sort of familiar voice fell upon her ears. And yet she still stepped into the steady flow of chaos that seemed to absorb the place. Maddison headed straight to what she assumed to be the nurses station and lent against it, as a woman with silvery blonde hair looked up at her and took off her glasses, slipping one of the arms into her scrub top as she gave Madison a warm smile.
“What can I do for you honey?” The kind-faced woman said her Philly accent was a comforting sound to Maddison’s ears after so many years of being away from home.
“I’m a new hire for the peds trauma specialist, my name's Maddison Robinavitch but you can just call me Maddie” Maddison said her voice gently along with the smile on her face. Which faltered slightly at the expression shift from the women before her from a warm greeting look, to a look of confusion
“Robinavitch?”She repeated back to Maddison with a pretty much flawless pronunciation, like she had said it more times then she could remember.
Which was a bit of a surprise to Maddison as most people struggled to even pronounce her last name, let alone say it with such familiarity.
“Yeah, thats a almost perfect pronunciation. Do you know someone with a similar last name? ”Maddison asked curiosity welling up inside of her
“You could say something like that here he comes now actually, Dr Robby got your new hire here” the woman called out to a man who was about to walk past the nurses station, but promptly turned around at the sound of his name. As Maddison made eye contact with the man she practically felt her heart drop into her stomach.
Michael.
Her brother who she hadn't seen since he hauled her into rehab in a different state then never contacted her again. But here he stood before her, that tired and exhausted look in his eyes that she remembered most about him still there, but only looked like it had deepened over the years.
“Maddison?” Robby said, his face a look of confusion and a sort of panic seeing his little sister for the first time in seven years and of all places stood in his ER.
“Michael” Maddison replied her voice strained slightly as all her past emotions seeming to hit her like a truck
“Thanks Dana” Robby said before quickly grabbing Maddison forearm and dragged her off into one of the trauma rooms that had just been emptied and closed the door behind them
“What are you doing here?” Robby said his voice firm, his expression unreadable as he looked at the women before him, a cruel reminder of the past he thought was buried.
“I’ve been hired here for the peds role, I didn’t know you worked here otherwise i wouldn't have even taken the job” Maddie said as she crossed her arms against her chest, as if that would suppress the anger bubbling up inside
“Then go tell Gloria, that you didn't like the people and are gonna look for a job elsewhere” Robby snapped at her as he ran a hand over his face
“No! I’m not leaving, just because you can’t stand to look at me doesn't mean I have to leave!” Maddie snapped back, standing her ground with him, something she wished she had been better at doing all them years ago
Robby looked at her for a moment, before scoffing and shaking his head quickly and glancing out the glass door then turned back to her.
“The only way I'm letting you work in my department is if you agree to d-”Robby went to say but was swiftly cut off by Maddie
“I did my time in rehab, I went to meetings, I got my sobriety chips, I'm not agreeing to do random drug tests to make you feel better! I just wanna do what im good at, which is my job” Maddie snapped at him her voice rising in volume as she pressed one of her fingers hard against his chest her gaze locked firmly on him.
Robby looked down at the finger pressed against his chest then looked back at Maddie meeting her gaze and the fury it brought with it. He was quiet for what felt like forever to Maddie but was in fact maybe fifteen seconds in reality
“So, you want me to trust you enough to work here when you're surrounded by the very thing that landed you in New York?.” Robby said his voice low and precise as he held her wrist and pulled her hand away from his chest and let it drop back to her side
“Yes I did my time and I'm stronger for it. I just want to do what I'm good at,” Maddie said as she shoved her hands into her jacket pocket, even though she debuted landing a clean punch to Robby's nose for his comment about her time in New York. Robby let out a sigh and rubbed his face then placed his hands harshly onto her shoulders.
“If I even see a small hint at a behaviour change so help me I will ship you off again, understood?.” Robby said
Maddie nodded then shoved his hands off her shoulder
“Fine whatever helps you sleep at night Micheal” She said with a slight huff
“Its Dr Robby here nobody calls me Micheal” Robby said and crossed his arms against his chest. Maddie nodded taking a small mental note, then took a small step back from him
“Okay Robby, will you at least introduce me to the rest of the staff instead of hurling me into a room like a shitty jacket?” Maddie said as she swayed back and forth on her feet, her hands still shoved into her jacket pocket.
“You are my shitty jacket” Robby said, turning around and pushing the door back open to the sound of the ER flooding the room. He stepped out heading towards the nurses station Maddie following behind some people staring at the two after the way Robby pretty much dragged Maddie into a trauma room not a few minutes prior.
Robby stopped just before the nurses station as Maddie stood by his side
“Can everyone listen up please!”Robby said glancing around the room as the steady chatter of the room slowly halted to quietness
“Along with Dr King and are new medical students Dr Santos,Dr Whitaker and Dr Javadi we also have new pediatric trauma Dr Robinavitch” Robby said not even fazed by the shocked mumbling and weird looks people were giving him, because he never told anyone about his family let alone he had a sister.
“Hiya everyone you can just call me Dr Maddie i can’t wait to get to know you all” Maddie said with a bright smile on her face as she once again swayed back and forth on her feet.
