Work Text:
Once upon a time, there was a peaceful kingdom ruled by a virtuous queen and king. More than anything, they wished for a child.
One winter's night, a blizzard swept through the land, blotting out the kingdom in a bitter storm of snow and ice, but leaving them the most precious gift.
A princess was born. To honor the night she arrived, her parents named the girl Snow White.
As she grew, the king and queen taught Snow that the bounty of the land belonged to all who tended to it. They showed her how to rule with love.
For someday, her destiny would be to lead.

The Good King and Queen took Snow out into the town and showed her around.
Good King:
Look upon this land
On the home we've come to know
Where magic and light fill the air
Where we plant a tender seed
Trusting something good will grow
Good King and Queen:
A kingdom for the free and the fair
Some miners showed her a shiny stone.
Miner 1:
Deep within the earth
There are wonders to be found
In the fields and the fruits that they bear
Miner 2:
With a treasure trove of gems
Hidden just below the ground
Both:
A beautiful abundance we share
All the townsfolk came together at the square and danced together.
All:
From the mountains high
To the deepest mines
In a golden sky
How the kingdom shines
And we give to this land
With a generous hand
And the bounty will flow
Where the good things grow
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Where the good things grow
Later, the Good King and Queen brought Snow to the wishing well in the castle courtyard.
Good King:
Make a wish for all you want to be
Good Queen:
Tell us who you someday wish to see
Snow looked down into the well and saw their reflections.
Snow White:
All I see is water
A mother, father, daughter
Good King:
And the seed of someone who will lead
And make the good things grow
Someone fearless
Snow White:
Someone fearless
Good King:
Someone fair
Snow White:
Someone fair
Good King:
Someone brave
Snow White:
Someone brave
Good King:
Someone true
Snow White:
Someone true
Good King:
Make a wish and you will see her too
Snow learned how to cook, clean, and garden. One day, the kingdom hosted a celebration.
All:
From the mountains high
To the deepest mines
In a golden sky
How the kingdom shines
And we gather and give
As together we live
By the lessons we know
Where the good things grow
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Where the good things grow
Snow saw a little girl hiding behind a corner, nervous. She approached the girl and gave her her flower crown.
All the while the Good King and Queen watched with pride.
End "Where the Good Things Grow"
Then, tragedy struck. The Good Queen fell ill and died. Snow and her father were heartbroken.
Until an enchanting woman from a far-off land appeared at the palace. Her name was Grimhilde. So great was her beauty that it seemed to grant her powers beyond ordinary.
The moment the Good King laid eyes on her, he asked her to marry him, so they did.
But she was not what she appeared to be. She was evil, and cared only about her own beauty and the power it granted.
To protect that power, she kept a magic mirror that she called upon every day.
"Slave in the Magic Mirror, come from the farthest space," she chanted. "Through wind and darkness, I summon thee. Speak. Let me see thy face."
The mirror screen engulfed in flame, and a green face emerged.
"What wouldst thou know, my Queen?" it asked.
"Magic Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?" asked Grimhilde.
"You, my Queen, of all the women reckoned fair, your beauty is beyond compare."
Grimhilde wasted no time. She warned of a terrible threat from beyond the Southern Kingdom.
So the Good King swore to defend his people.
Before he left, he gave Snow a necklace with a heart pendant reading, 'Fearless, Fair, Brave, True.'
"Hold it close, till I return to you," he said.
And he and his army set off.
None of them returned.
Fear gripped the kingdom, and Grimhilde's power grew. She turned the farmers into soldiers loyal only to her, and robbed the riches of the kingdom for herself. She made Snow a servant, dressed her in rags, and locked her behind the castle walls.
But as long as the mirror answered each day that Grimhilde was the fairest, Snow remained safe from her cruel jealousy.

Snow stood out in the courtyard and saw how miserable all the children were.
Little Girl:

Little Boy:

Little Girl:
Where's the golden sky?
Little Boy:
Did it ever shine?
Both:
Was it beautiful then?
Will we find it again?
How I wish I could go…
As the years passed, the people forgot there ever was a princess named Snow White. In truth, she nearly forgot herself.

One day, while Snow was mopping the floor, she heard noises coming from the kitchen.
"Hello?" she called.
No answer.
Snow went over to the kitchen. "I'm sorry, is there something I can help you with?"
The person she saw was a boy she didn't recognize trying to steal food.
He looked up at her. "That's okay, just browsing."
Then he went back to stealing.
"I'm gonna have to ask you to put those back," said Snow.
"I would, but it seems like the queen has plenty already," the thief argued.
"So that's your excuse for stealing?"
"I'm hungry. That's my excuse. Do you think the people upstairs care?"
"The princess does."
"Snow hasn't been seen or heard from anyone."
"All she does is think about how to help her people."
"Then let her know that at some point, she should stop thinking and start doing."
"There's an intruder in the castle!" came the voice of a guard. "Seal the door!"
The thief turned to leave, but not before saying, "Take some for yourself."
Later, Snow went to the dining room, where Grimhilde sat.
"Have you finished your chores?" the queen asked.
Snow bowed her head. "Yes, Your Majesty."
"It's important we all do our share."
"That's what I came to talk about, actually. Sharing."
The queen snapped her fingers, and two guards set down a stool for Snow to sit on.
"Please, you were saying?" the queen requested.
"It's just, Your Majesty, people are struggling, and… it's not much, but when I was young, my parents and I would pick apples. We'd take them, make pies, and go out into the village..."
"Pies? Pies are luxuries. They don't need luxuries, it confuses them."
"But sometimes something small, something sweet can make you believe there's more to being alive than mere subsistence."
"You know, I don't remember you being this… opinionated."
Snow bowed her head. "My apologies. It's just… I feel they need some kindness."
Grimhilde reached out to touch Snow's necklace. Snow flinched when her hand touched it.
"'Fearless, fair, brave, true,'" Grimhilde read. "How quaint. One day, you'll understand how useless those words are." She got up and walked to one of her vases. "But in the meantime, here's a tidbit for you." She picked up a single rose. "Observe, ravishing, isn't it?"
Snow admired the rose. "Yeah, it…"
Then Grimhilde summoned a diamond and turned the rose to dust. "One is weak, useless, fragile, the other, hard, unyielding, everlasting, flawless, beautiful. Where I come from, people want a diamond, not a flower."
That's when the Huntsman came in with the same thief from earlier in his grasp.
"Your Highness, this criminal was caught in the scullery pilfering royal supplies," he explained.
"That's a lie!" the thief said defensively.
The Huntsman pulled the thief's shirt, causing a few potatoes to fall out.
Grimhilde approached the thief. "You must be Jonathan, that bandit that roams the forest, stealing in the name of the king?"
"The one and only," Jonathan replied.
Grimhilde turned to the Huntsman. "Find his home and burn it."
"Funny thing is, I don't have a home."
"Then remove his coat and boots and bind him outside to freeze."
"You know, is the dungeon an option?"
The Huntsman carried Jonathan to the courtyard.
All the while Snow White stood there, head down, and let it happen.
"Isn't this what you want, Snow White?" Grimhilde remarked, forcing her to face the mirror. "Go on, speak to your people. Your subjects await you. Your pies and wise words, what will you tell them? That you made them dessert? You live in a world of wishes. Go back to your well."
With that, Grimhilde left the room. Snow White once again hung her head.
Play "Waiting on a Wish" (2025)
Snow White:
Little girl at a lonely well
With the same little tale to tell
Feeling trapped by the walls that hold her
Feeling stuck in the story they told her
Another day where she fades away
Never daring to disobey
So she's dreaming all alone
Sharing secrets with the stone
My father told me long ago
I braved a bitter storm of snow
Is that a girl I'll ever know again?
Snow went to the wishing well and looked down at her reflection in the water.
I'm waiting on a wish
Beneath a thousand treetops
And as the silver sky stops
I send a whisper to the water
I'm waiting on a wish
Holding out for someday
Hoping somehow, someway
I'll become my father's daughter
I close my eyes and see
The girl I'm meant to be
Is she a part of me I've yet to find?
Wondering, "Will she appear
Or will I be forever here
Waiting on a wish?"
She grabbed a broom and swept the area.
Little girl by a wild wood
How she tries to be someone good
She froze, backed to the wall, and saluted as guards passed by.
But in the shadow the kingdom's caught in
Somehow, fairness is long forgotten
So will she rise or bow her head?
Will she lead or just be led?
Is she the girl she always said she'd be?
She threw the broom down and went onto the balcony.
I'm waiting on a wish
Beneath a thousand treetops
And as the silver sky stops
I long to leave the walls behind me
I'm waiting on a wish
Holding out for someday
Hoping somehow, someway
There comes a miracle to find me
I close my eyes and see
The girl I'm meant to be
Is she a part of me I've had to hide?
Wondering, "Will she appear
Or will I spend another year
Waiting on a wish?"
And so, she continued to do her chores.
They say all you have to do
To make your wish come true
Is let it echo, echo, echo, echo
Your voice will carry through
And bring that dream to you
Just like an echo, echo, echo
Well, I can hear the echo loud and clear
But I'm still waiting here

Snow found Jonathan tied to a pole in the courtyard. She fought her fear, ran over to him, and untied him.
Then she offered a piece of bread. "It's not much."
Jonathan hesitated, then reached out to take the bread. When their hands touched, they froze for a moment, then he took the bread.
"How bad is it out there?" asked Snow.
"Why don't you come out and find out?" Jonathan suggested.
"I… I can't."
That's when they heard guards.
"You gotta go," Snow urged. "Run."
"Thank you," Jonathan thanked.
"GO!"
Jonathan ran.

Snow walked back into the castle, not noticing Grimhilde looking down at her from the balcony with much contempt.
Grimhilde returned to the mirror room.
"Magic Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?" she asked.
The Magic Mirror took form. "Famed is thy beauty, Majesty, but wait, a lovely maiden I now behold, awakened to the world. Nothing can hide her gentle grace, for I see, she is more fair than thee."
"NO!"
Later, Grimhilde summoned her Huntsman.
The Huntsman bowed. "Your Majesty."
"Take Snow White to the forest, find her a secluded glade where she can pick apples," Grimhilde ordered. "There, my faithful Huntsman, kill her."
The Huntsman looked up. "But Your Majesty, she's just a little girl."
The Queen stood up. "And I am your queen! She set that bandit free. She's plotting against me. Are you plotting against me?"
The Huntsman didn't answer.
"Are you?!" Grimhilde repeated.
The Huntsman bowed again. "No, Your Majesty."
Grimhilde brought out a small box. "To prove you did not fail me, bring back her heart in this. If you do, you'll have anything your heart desires."
Later that day, Snow White, now dressed in a blue and yellow dress, and a red cloak, walked around the glade. She picked some apples, and even offered one to the Huntsman.
"Would you like one?" she asked.
The Huntsman nearly gasped, but he kept his composure.
"That's very kind of you," he said, taking the apple.
Then she noticed a baby bird, sad and alone.
She approached the bird. "Hello there, little bird. What's the matter? Where are your parents?"
The Huntsman watched the whole thing, and got hesitant.
The bird started to cry.
"Oh, don't cry," Snow said calmly as she let him fly onto her finger. "Perk up, won't you smile for me?"
The bird smiled a tiny bit.
The Huntsman slowly took out his knife.
"Your parents can't be far," Snow assured.
Then came chirping. Snow looked up and saw two bigger birds on a branch.
"There they are," said Snow. "Can you fly?"
The Huntsman got closer.
The bird flew up and reunited with his parents. Snow waved goodbye.
Then she saw the Huntsman shadow looming over her. She turned around and saw him with a knife.
"Why?" she asked with wide eyes.
The Huntsman dropped his knife and fell to his knees.
"I can't do it, forgive me," he cried, looking up at Snow. "You need to run into the woods. The Queen will stop at nothing."
"I can't leave the kingdom," Snow argued.
The Huntsman grabbed Snow by the collar. "She is evil, child." He then let her go. "Go, before I change my mind!"
Snow ran into the woods.
An owl jumped from one of the trees and flew into her.
Then a bunch of bats swarmed her.
Snow ran into a branch. Some of them caught onto her cloak. It was almost like they were trying to grab her. She had to tear off her cloak to get free.
Then she came across a tree that looked like it had a face on it. Its branches looked like arms reaching out to grab her.
Snow backed away and fell into a ravine. A group of crocodiles tried to bite her, so she swam out of the lake.
But then she saw a bunch of eyes just staring at her, menacingly. She fell to the floor and sobbed.
All the eyes slowly came into the light, revealing they were actually innocent forest creatures like rabbits, birds, and deer.
One of the rabbits approached Snow and rubbed his face against her head. Snow sat up and gasped.
All the animals ran and hid.
"Oh, don't run away," Snow pleaded. "I won't hurt you. I didn't mean to frighten you, but you don't know what I've been through, and all because I was afraid. What do you do when things go wrong?"
The little bird from earlier flew onto Snow's finger and started to sing. Snow sang along. Together, they harmonized.
Play "A Smile and a Song" (1937)
Snow White:
With a smile and a song
Life is just like a bright, sunny day
Your cares fade away
And your heart is young
With a smile and a song
All the world seems to waken anew
Rejoicing with you
As the song is sung
There's no use in grumbling
When raindrops come tumbling
Remember you're the one
Who can fill the world with sunshine
When you smile and you sing
Everything is in tune and it's spring
And life flows along
With a smile and a song

All the animals applauded.
"I feel quite happy now," said Snow. "Everything's going to be alright, but I need a place to sleep at night. Do you know where I can find one?"
The animals nodded, and they all guided her out of the woods.
Eventually, they found a small cottage.
Snow peaked through the window and saw no one. She then went through the front door and looked around.
In the dining area, she saw seven little chairs. The place was filled with cobwebs, and dirty dishes were left lying on the counter.
Snow went upstairs and discovered a bedroom. She saw seven tiny beds that read, in alphabetical order, 'Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, and Sneezy.'
She then started to feel sleepy. She climbed onto three of the beds and lied down. The birds put a blanket over her, and she fell asleep.

The Seven Dwarves marched in single file to the mines.
Doc:
Heigh-Ho
All:
Heigh-Ho
Heigh-Ho
Heigh-Ho
Heigh-Ho
Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho
It's off to work we go
It's rise and shine
Doc:
And stay in line
All:
Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho
Heigh-Ho, we heard the rooster crow
Happy:
All dressed and fed
All:
Full speed ahead
Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho
Dopey, the silent one in the very back, stumbled getting his bucket. Still, he got it and caught up with the rest.
Happy:
A splendid day to say
Sneezy:
Achoo!
The sneeze put out all the other lanterns.
Doc:
Oh my, gesundheit
Sneezy:
Why, thank you
Grumpy:
You know what I'm allergic to?
This sorry sack of chumps
Doc:
Why don't you shut it, Grumps?
The dwarves got on the carts and rode deep into the mines.
All:
Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho
Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho
Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho
It's off to work we go
The carts stopped at the destination, and they all got off.
Sleepy:
I function best at a full-time's rest
And so, it's back to bed I go
Sleepy leaned down to sleep, nearly falling into a pit of spiky rocks.
Luckily, Doc was able to save him.
Doc:
Hello?
Sleepy:
I'm Sleepy
The Rest:
Yeah, we know
Doc and Grumpy:
And the more we talk, the less we walk
Happy:
Let's go
All:
Heigh-Ho
And with that, they all got to work. Their hands let out a fluorescent glow. When they touched the rocks, the diamonds glowed.
Doc:
Deep in the dark, our magic will mark
The spot where the sparkle starts to shine
Bashful:
There's gems in the land, so hold out your hand
Both:
As light so brightly fills the mine
Grumpy:
Now quick, better climb and
All:
Dig for a diamond
Everyone pointed to Dopey, who was slacking.
Get your rear and gear
Dopey stumbled and touched one of the rocks. The glow spread throughout the mine.
Now yank at your socks
Let's rip at the rocks
They swung their pickaxes into the rocks.
And as we swing, we always sing
Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho
Happy:
The highest high I know
Is when we dig up rocks this big
And so, my smile starts to grow
I glow, I'm Happy
The Rest:
Yeah, we know
Grumpy:
You make me sick
A bucket, quick
Happy:
Oh no
All:
Heigh-Ho
The dwarves dug some jewels into a wheelbarrow pushed by Dopey.
We dig dig dig dig dig dig dig
From early morn till night
We dig dig dig dig dig dig dig
Up everything in site
Doc:
We dig up diamonds by the score
Happy:
A thousand rubies, sometimes more
All:
It's the sparkly stuff we're digging for
We dig dig dig dig dig
Dopey tried to lift a stick holding two buckets full of gems. Because of the weight, he fell onto the conveyor belt.
Two diamonds stuck to his eyes. When he got up, he saw everything in a whole new light.
He didn't realize that he had hit the buckets against all the other dwarves.
When the diamonds came off, he saw Grumpy staring at him angrily.
Grumpy chased Dopey down the belt. Everyone else went after Grumpy. Dopey tripped and fell, causing the others to fall on top of him.
Then the clock struck six. Two tiny miners came out of their tiny doors and clinked their tiny hammers against a tiny anvil.
Doc:
Heigh-Ho
All:
Heigh-Ho
Heigh-Ho
Heigh-Ho
Heigh-Ho
Heigh-Ho
They all got back on their mine carts and rode back out.
Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho
It's home from work we go
Doc:
We did it, gang
Happy:
We're done? Hot dang
All:
Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho
Happy and Sneezy:
Heigh-Ho, sing out fortissimo
Bashful:
Oh dear, oh my
Do you mind if I lay low?
See, sometimes I get so, get so…
Bashful covered his face, which had turned red.
Happy:
He's Bashful
The Rest:
Yeah, we know
Grumpy:
Well move your tail, let's hit the trail
Doc:
Don't drag your feet
Happy:
It's time to eat
Once they were out, they stopped the carts and climbed out.
Doc:
We'll sleep
Sleepy:
Amen

Arise and then
It's off to work we go again

The Seven Dwarves returned to their cottage, threw off their clothes, left them on the floor, and went upstairs to their bedroom.
Then they saw something moving around under the blankets of their beds. It almost looked like a monster.
So, they all turned and ran.
Except for Dopey. By the time he realized what was going on, the others had already locked him inside. He tried to open the door, but the knob came off.
"Wait, where's Dopey?" asked Happy.
Everyone peaked through the cracks and holes in the door.
"Don't move," Doc warned. "Ogres smell fear."
"That's no ogre," Grumpy argued. "That's a phantasm."
"Should he crouch and hide or make himself big and roar?" asked Happy.
Dopey toned out their voices, stared down the creature, stepped closer, and moved the blanket.
It wasn't a monster. It was a human girl.
The girl woke up with a start.
Dopey ran and hid. She got up, picked up her lantern, and approached him.
"It's alright, I won't hurt you," she calmly assured. "What's your name?"
The dwarf didn't answer.
"Do you speak?" the girl asked.
The other dwarves burst into the room, pickaxes at the ready, then they stopped when they saw her.
Doc gasped. "It's a human."
"Yes," the girl confirmed. "What did you think I was?"
"Ghost," Grumpy said bluntly.
"Where did you come from?" asked Happy.
"Are you hungry?" asked Bashful. "Can we be friends?"
The other dwarves bombarded the girl with questions.
"Why is everyone being so cordial?" asked Grumpy. "The only human who has ever shown up here was a bandit claiming to fight in the name of the king." He pointed an accusatory finger. "You're in trouble with the law, aren't you?"
The girl turned to leave.
"Told you," Grumpy told the others.
"Wait, hold on," said Doc. "At least tell us who you are."
"My name is Snow White," the girl introduced herself.
All the dwarves gasped and whispered to each other.
Except for Grumpy. "She's obviously lying."
Snow ran for the front door.
"Where are you going?" asked Doc.
"As far away from the castle as possible," Snow replied.
"But why?"
Snow stopped and turned around. "The queen tried to kill me."
"That's terrible," Grumpy said apathetically. "Which is also why you have to leave."
"You should stay here," Doc urged. "At least until you figure out where to go."
"What?!"
"That's a great idea," Happy agreed.
"Hold on," said Grumpy. "A human shows up here for the first time in 275 years, and you ask her to stay?"
"Wait, did you say 275 years?" asked Snow.
"274, to be precise," Doc corrected. "We're as old as the trees."
Snow smiled. "Father always told me this forest was magical."
"And I always said humans were nothing but trouble," Grumpy remarked.
"Sorry, I didn't catch your name. Don't tell me who you are. Let me guess." She first looked at Doc. "You must be Doc?"
"Why yes," Doc confirmed.
Snow then saw Bashful looking away. "And you're Bashful?"
Bashful blushed and tied his beard in a knot.
Sleepy yawned.
"You're sleepy?" Snow guessed.
Sneezy sneezed.
"Sneezy," Snow realized before seeing Happy's bright smile. "You're…"
"Happy, yes," Happy replied. "And this is Dopey. He don't talk none. He never tried."
"Aw, that's too bad," Snow said empathetically.
Grumpy gave her the stink-eye.
"You must be Grumpy," Snow teased.
The others laughed, making Grumpy roll his eyes.
Snow nodded. "Alright, and what exactly do you do out here in the forest?"
"Well, it's our job to mine," said Doc.
"You'd be amazed what we find," Bashful rhymed.
"Sparkling rocks of every kind," Sneezy went on.
"Not for long if she resides," Grumpy argued.
"Look at the time," Sleepy said before falling asleep.
"The important thing is that Snow White is safe at our address," said Happy.
"Objection," Grumpy argued.
Doc waved a hand. "Noted." Then he turned to Snow. "Just ignore him."
BOOM!
"Maybe I'll just stay for one night," Snow relented.
Grimhilde returned to her magic mirror.
"Magic Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?" she asked.
"Far beyond the castle walls, in the forest dwells Snow White," the mirror replied.
"Snow White is dead." Grimhilde opened her box and pulled out a bloody heart. "My Huntsman has brought me proof. Behold, her heart."
"Snow White still lives, the fairest in the land. The heart of a pig, you hold in your hand."
Grimhilde looked at the heart angrily. "The heart of a pig? I've been tricked!"
She threw the heart back in the box and slammed it shut.

Grimhilde stood up and looked down on him.

Grimhilde:
Perhaps I've been a bit confusing
But I've no need for your advice
In fact, I find it quite amusing
Telling me to play nice
Well, nice will get you nowhere
Nice won't get the doing done
Ambitious girls must be vicious girls
And boy, they will have fun
This is gonna be fun
All is fair when you wear the crown
To be the queen means you do as you please
I could spare you or tear you right down
On a whim, I can bring the world to its knees
The guards grabbed the Huntsman and forced him to dance with them.
Now, I could forgive, even forget
Let you live, you'd be all set
But to start, I don't have the heart
As you might recall
So darling, all is fair
When you're the fairest of all
Grimhilde walked out of the throne room as her guards marched in sync.
Now perhaps you might have heard that
"The truest beauty will shine from inside"
Well if somebody said that, somebody lied
It's the gold and the glitter
And the gems and the jewels
Beauty means power
Means I write the rules
"Take him to be hanged," she ordered.
The guards carried the Huntsman out. He tried to free himself, but they were stronger.
She got on the stairway for the big finale.
All is fair when you wear the crown
So who would dare stand in my way?
Now beware, if you let me down
Down, down, down in the dungeon you'll stay
But if you get the deed finally done
I will proceed second to none
With no doubt when I'm calling out
Mirror on the wall
"Tell me, who is fair?
Who is fair beyond compare?"
It's gonna me be that you declare
"Captain, search the forest, find Snow White," she ordered. "Don't come back without her."
The captain bowed, and all the other guards did the same.

"It's not fair," Grumpy whined as he hammered a nail onto the railing. "It's morning and she's still here. They'll come looking for her, and when they find her…" He made a slit-throat gesture, then turned to Dopey specifically. "What do you have to say about that?"
"Grumpy, you know he doesn't talk," Happy reminded.
"Because he's a dope!"
Dopey noticed a firefly land on his nose, and he tried to focus on it.
"Just because he's called Dopey, it doesn't mean he's a dope," Happy argued.
"Of course he is!" Grumpy yelled. "Just like you're called Happy because you're happy, Sneezy's called Sneezy because he sneezes all the time, and I'm called Grumpy because I… I'm misunderstood."
He tried to hit his hammer on the nail again, but he hammered his own hand. He cried in pain and accidentally threw the hammer onto the table.
The hammer fell onto Sleepy's head, forcing him awake. Bashful picked up the hammer, Sneezy saw him with it, and he angrily threw a piece of bread.
The other dwarves started throwing food at each other.
"Come on guys, why can't we all be friends?" asked Happy.
Everyone else ignored him.
When some of the food hit Grumpy, he swung down onto the table, causing one end to break off.
The firefly Dopey caught flew into his mouth. He coughed it out and tried to safely guide it out of the cottage.
Doc accidentally released a bunch of pepper into Sneezy's nose, triggering his allergy. A bowl of gruel was sent flying into the air, and it landed on Dopey's head.
Everyone laid eyes on Dopey and laughed at him.
"Food goes in your mouth, not on your head!" said Grumpy.
Dopey threw the bowl off his head and ran out.
Snow finally came out of the bedroom, saw what was happening, and followed him. She found him sitting by himself on a tree stump.
"Are you alright?" she asked, sitting next to him. "Makes you want to run and hide. Are you afraid to speak?"
Dopey shook his head.
Snow's eyes widened. "You don't speak because you can't. You know, there are other ways to communicate. When I was a little girl, my mother taught me how to whistle, so when I don't want to speak, I whistle. When you whistle, it's your heart singing, and that voice hidden in your heart can be heard." She whistled a soft tune. "See? Now you try."
Dopey stood up and blew hard.
"Just enough to make a candle flicker," said Snow. "Not go out."
Dopey blew a little softer. The whistle started out soft, then got louder. He gasped excitedly, and continued to whistle.
"You did it," Snow smiled. "I knew you could. Come on."
They went back inside, where all the other dwarves continued to fight. Snow nodded at Dopey.
Dopey whistled, getting all the dwarves to stop.
"What's that divine noise?" asked Happy.
"Did a songbird fly in?" Bashful wondered.
Then they all noticed Dopey.
"He sounds like a baby angel," Happy remarked.
"It's a trick!" Grumpy accused.
"It's not a trick," Snow assured.
"How are you doing that?" asked Doc.
"You put your lips together, place your tongue behind your teeth, and whistle."
Sneezy tried to whistle, and just sneezed. Happy plugged his mouth and tried to whistle himself. All that came out was spit.
Snow whistled, shutting them all up. "Is this normal or just something you do among friends?"
"We're not friends," Grumpy insisted.
"275 years is a long time to argue."
"274," Doc corrected.
"Leave me out of it," said Grumpy. "I'm the only sensible one here."
"And you think they're not listening to any sense?" asked Snow.
"Correct."
"I take your point, Mr. Grumpy."
Grumpy turned around. "You…" He paused. "Wait…"
"It seems to me that everyone here could do a much better job at listening to one another."
Everyone looked around at the huge mess in the room. The cuckoo clock fell off the wall and broke.
Dopey whistled.
"I was thinking the same thing," Snow agreed.
She looked into the cupboard for cleaning supplies, then she passed them among the dwarves.
Play "Whistle While you Work" (2025)
First, she gave Sleepy a sponge.
Snow White:
Now you was the dishes
Next, she pointed at Bashful, making him blush.
You tidy up the room
Then, she gave a duster to Sneezy.
You clean those cobwebs.
Finally, she gave Happy a broom, making him beam.
And he'll use the broom
Whistle while you work
She whistled.
And cheerfully together
We can tidy up the place
Sleepy fell asleep.
So hum a merry tune
She hummed.
It won't take long
When there's a song
To help you set the pace
Grumpy pouted. A squirrel climbed onto his head and imitated him, making the others laugh.
Snow handed Grumpy a dirty dish, then showed Happy how to use the broom properly.
And as you sweep the floor
What used to be a bore
Will feel just like a game
And not the same old chore it was before
Whistle while you work
Happy tried to whistle, but nothing came out.
"You'll get it," Snow assured.
When we're a team
The house will gleam
So whistle while you work
Whistle while you work
Dopey whistled.
It's easy to get through it
When we do it hand and hand
So catch that merry tune
Sleepy tried to hum with his face in the water.
"I'll take it," Snow smiled.
When work is fun
The work gets done
In half the time you planned
Happy:
Wait, I think that brush is mine
Grumpy:
You should've hung a sign
If you don't hush, I'll take this brush
And shove it where the sun don't shine
Snow White:
Whistle while you work
Happy and Grumpy whistled.
Your bickering won't fix a thing
So whistle while you work
Snow White and the Seven Dwarves continued to clean up the place and dance, all the while Snow vocalized.
Dopey lifted up the table while Grumpy and Bashful reapplied the legs. A woodpecker pecked the nails into place.
Dwarves:
It's easy to get through it
When we do it hand in hand
Dopey then got onto the table and showed off his moves.
"Look at Dopey," said Bashful.
All:
Whistle while you work
They all whistled.
We've scrubbed the house together
Now it's clean as clean can be
So hum a merry tune
They all hummed.
This grimy group
Became a troupe
That feels like family
What used to be a mess
That lived at this address
Is now clean as a whistle
Whistling sounds of happiness
Whistle while you work
They whistled again.
Snow White:
When work is fun
The work gets done
Dwarves:
It's mighty fine
When we combine
All:
It won't take long
When there's a song
So whistle while you work
They whistled one final time.
End "Whistle While you Work"
"I forgot getting along could be so much fun," said Bashful.
"I forgot we had an oven in here," Sneezy admitted.
"When I was little, every day was like this," Snow admitted.
"Every day?" asked Happy.
Snow nodded. "Every day." She hung her head in sadness. "When my father was king." She turned to Grumpy. "You said there's a bandit in the woods who fights in the name of the king?"
"A human criminal. That rebel is nothing but a thief."
"I advise against looking for him," Doc warned. "It's too dangerous."
"Stay with me!" Bashful begged, then blushed. "I mean us!"
"Yeah, you barely got away from the queen last time," Sneezy pointed out, then he sneezed.
"Gesundheit," said Snow. "This is what I have to do. Besides, Grumpy's right. The longer I stay here, the more danger I put you in."
"At last," Grumpy smiled, then pointed at the door.
"Grumpy!" Happy scolded.
"No, it's time I stop hiding," Snow declared. "Thank you all, even you, Grumpy."
Grumpy was visibly surprised, but he nodded. "Be safe out there."
"Now, can you point me in the right direction?"
All the dwarves pointed in different directions.
Then the clock struck seven.
"Crud, we're late for work," Doc panicked.
They all ran around to get their stuff.
Once all the dwarves were ready, they lined up and marched to the mine, whistling all the while.
Dopey stopped to wave goodbye to Snow, then he ran to catch up with the others.
Snow went her own way in search of Jonathan. After hours of trekking, she heard a trumpet.
A few animals approached her, made a bunch of chitters, as if trying to warn her about something, then they all went off.
That's when something grabbed Snow and pulled her behind a tree. It was Jonathan.
"Don't say a word," he warned.
Two soldiers passed by on their horses.
"If we go this way, we'll link up with the others!" one told the other.
"When I told you to come see what it was like out here, I didn't expect you to invite half the guards," Jonathan remarked.
"I didn't invite them," Snow corrected. "I had no choice but to run. The queen wants me dead."
"Come on."
The two walked the opposite way of the guards.
"I was actually looking for you," said Snow. "I was hoping you might be able to help me. You're loyal to the one true king."
Jonathan looked at her. "Right, absolutely."
Snow looked at him. "You don't know what you're doing, don't you?"
"Sorry to disappoint. You must have mistaken me for a knight in shining armor."
"I'm sure no one's making that mistake. I was just hoping we could take back the kingdom together."
"Oh, of course. Princesses are always waiting for a prince to show up."
"Obviously, you forgot how things used to be, when things were kind and fair."
"Well, there is a problem with that."
Play "Princess Problems" (2025)
Jonathan:
Times are looking bleak
So princess, take a peak
See, every day it's sink or swim
Jonathan pointed up at the sky, where vultures flew around in a circle.
Famine's on the rise
With vultures circling the skies
And prospects, well, they're rather grim
Let me break you the news
The odds can't be beaten
And a man's gotta choose
Will he eat or get eaten?
Does that brighten your day?
Do the facts make you frown?
Waking up to the real world
Is bringing you down?
Well, that sounds an awful lot princess problems
Finally learning that life's not fair
Seems to me you got some princess problems
Ain't it crummy when folks won't share?
I could try being "kind" or whatever you said
It's just that I'm partial to not being dead
Jonathan snatched Snow's necklace. She snatched it back.
So I'm sticking to my plan
I'm grabbing all I can
Instead of living in a fantasy
See your princess problems don't apply to me
"So, you've moved on from potatoes?" asked Snow.
"I have many talents," Jonathan admitted.
Snow White:
Charming speech, but are you done?
"None for all and all for none"
Such a gift of hope you give
Jonathan:
Yeah, well hope's in short supply
Snow White:
But still, we have to try
Jonathan:
Well, how about you try to live?
Snow White:
So that's it? You give in?
Jonathan:
Nah, you begin to get wise
'Cause you can't fix the world by breaking apple pies
Yeah, we got a classic case of princess problems
The castle's cozy, but it's cold outside
Snow White:
Sure, just write them off as princess problems
And staying selfish is justified
Jonathan:
That is harsh, I'm proud
Look at you getting mean
Snow White:
Look, the kingdom needs help
Jonathan:
You should go ask the queen
But I'm staying on the run
Looking out for number one
And that's the way it's gonna be
'Cause your princess problems don't apply to me
See, you're a lovely gal
With your royal rationale
But out here in reality
See, your princess problems don't apply to me
They don't apply to me
End "Princess Problems"
Right as the song ended, an arrow flew right past them. They ran behind a tree.
"We are in search of Princess Snow White," came a voice.
"You need to run, Princess," Jonathan urged.
"What about you?" asked Snow.
"Don't worry about me. I'll hold them off."
"I'll fight with you."
"I'm not asking."
"I'll make it a fair fight."
"You see, I don't fight fair." Jonathan got out of the cover and held his hands up. "Don't shoot. I can tell you where the princess is."
He turned to Snow and urged her to go. Snow turned and ran.
When she was far enough, she turned around and saw Jonathan fighting the soldiers.
A rabbit grabbed her skirt and tugged it.
"I can't leave," Snow insisted. "I'm gonna need your help."
All the guards ganged up on Jonathan and held him down.
"Last chance, bandit," said the captain. "Tell us where's Snow White?"
"You seek Snow White," came her voice. "I'm over here!"
They all turned and saw her in the distance. With the guards distracted, Jonathan snuck off.
The guards went off and found Snow White hiding behind a tree.
Except it wasn't her. It was just her dress, controlled by a bunch of birds. The birds flew into the air, taking the dress with it, then disbanded, causing the dress to fall to the ground.
"Split up, find them!" the captain ordered. He turned to where his horse was, only to find it gone. "Where's my horse?"
Snow White rode the captain's horse through the forest, and met up with Jonathan. She climbed off and allowed the horse to go.
"You came back," said Jonathan.
"Someone had to solve your 'princess problem'," Snow remarked. "I guess that was me."
Jonathan smiled. "You continue to impress me."
"Compliment like that coming from a criminal mastermind like yourself?"
Jonathan was silent for a moment, then, "The people, they forgot how things used to be. They despise the queen, but they're afraid. That's why I fight in your father's name. Your parents weren't afraid of anything. They made us feel braver. They gave everyone hope."
Suddenly, an arrow came flying and hit Jonathan in the shoulder.
Snow gasped, then she turned to where the arrow came from. She saw a guard with a crossbow pointed at her.
Then a deer charged and hit the guard with his antlers.
Snow turned back to Jonathan and examined him. "Jonathan, are you okay?"
Jonathan took a sharp breath. "I think I'm gonna need a doctor."
Snow White brought Jonathan to the dwarves' cottage.
"Doc is more of a sobriquet rather than a technical title as my true expertise lies in the study of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic granules," Doc explained.
"He's badly injured, you need to help him," Snow urged.
"But he's a bandit!" Grumpy argued.
Snow whistled. "That's exactly what the queen wants. She's poisoned everyone into believing that it's everyone for themselves, but if we give up our meager scraps, we'll inherit what's meant for all of us. It just requires faith in each other. Now help him, please."
Doc looked down at Jonathan, then turned back to Snow. "Bring him inside."
A little while later, Doc came out.
"I used the blast furnace to cut through the bedrock, then drilled to the fissure core, added a poultice or two, added a seed of saturninum, acid of sulfur dulcified…" Doc listed off.
Then he sighed and hung his head.
Right after, Jonathan came out.
"That was… unpleasant," he said.
Doc let out a sigh of relief.
Snow smiled. "Thank you, Doc."
"It's no problem," Doc assured. "I'll do anything for Snow White's special friend."
He winked.
"No, it's not that," said Snow. "I would've brought anyone here to…"
"Run-of-the-mill kindness," said Jonathan.
"It's nothing to do with you."
Then there was awkward silence.
"This is wonderful," Happy said, breaking the silence. "You know what time it is?"
"Please, no," Grumpy pleaded.
"It's time to dance," Sneezy declared before sneezing.
Play "Silly Song" (1937)
So the dwarves danced and yodeled. Doc played a guitar, Bashful played an accordion, and Grumpy played a pipe organ. Snow and Jonathan sat, watched, and clapped their hands to the beat.
Happy:
I'd like to dance and tap my feet
But they won't keep in rhythm
You see, I washed them both today
And I can't do nothing with them
All:
Oh, hum, the tune is dumb
The words don't mean a thing
Isn't this a silly song
For anyone to sing?
Dopey grabbed a whole bunch of drumsticks and tossed them in the air. They landed on the drums in sync with the beat.
Then Happy and Sleepy pushed Bashful into the spotlight. He tried to sing, but then he got nervous.
Grumpy angrily slammed his hands on the keys.
Bashful:
I chased a polecat up a tree
Way out upon a limb
And when he got the best of me
I got the worst of him
All:
Oh, hum, the tune is dumb
The words don't mean a thing
Isn't this a silly song
For anyone to sing?
Snow and Jonathan got up and danced along to the song. Some of the forest animals joined in as well.
End "Silly Song"
Play "A Hand Meets a Hand" (2025)
When they were done dancing, Snow and Jonathan sat down. Their hands touched, and they blushed at each other.
Snow White:
I used to think that the way
Through the woods would be lonely
Dark forest before me
The night hanging heavy above
And the wind blows
But now I don't shake in the shadows
Maybe wherever this road goes
I won't have to walk it alone
'Cause a hand meets a hand
Like it found where to land
And suddenly I've watched the world come alive
And now I'm lost in the view
So I start to let go
And give in to the glow
Oh, I know it's naive
But tonight, I believe
That something so good could come through
And maybe it might have a little
Something to do with you
Jonathan:
I used to think that this world
Would forever stay broken
Cutthroat and cruel
Every fool had to fend for themselves
But who knows?
When we're together, the time slows
Maybe, wherever this road goes
I won't have to walk it alone
'Cause a hand meets a hand
Something I never planned
And suddenly I've watched the world come alive
And I just might like the view
Both:
So I start to let go
Just to see what'll grow
And perhaps I'm naive
But tonight, I believe
That something good could come true
And maybe it might have a little
Something to do with you
And maybe I'm dreaming
Well, I'd like to stay just like this
But if there's a world where you wake me
Promise to wake me with a kiss
A hand meets a hand
Finally somewhere to land
Seems it's not so naive
To begin to believe
Something good has come true
And maybe it might have a little
Something, it might have everything
To do with you
End "A Hand Meets a Hand"
The two leaned forward, their lips puckered…
And then they realized everyone was watching. They immediately pulled away from each other.
"Hi," they said together.
Then they heard trumpets.
"I need to leave," said Jonathan. "I can't let the queen's guards find this place."
"I'll go with you," said Snow.
"No, we can't stay together. It'll make it easier for them to find us. I'll go. Meet me at the stream at sunrise."
Snow took off her necklace and gave it to Jonathan. "Here, take it for luck."
Jonathan smiled, then he ran.
Jonathan hid behind a tree and waited for the guards to pass.
"You're really doing it, Johnny boy," he said to himself. "You're one of the good guys, honest, steadfast, loyal, you're a…"
Then he stepped on a twig.
"Idiot," he finished.
Then he got caught in a net.
Jonathan was taken to the castle and brought to the throne room.
"You look familiar," said Grimhilde.
"Yeah, the lady with the good potatoes," Jonathan remarked.
"Where is Snow White?"
"Snow who?"
"You're protecting her."
"Answer Her Majesty!" the captain ordered.
He shook Jonathan, revealing the necklace from under his shirt.
Grimhilde stood up, approached him, and took the necklace off of him.
"Show me where you found him," she ordered the captain.
"In the forest, by the stream, two furlongs south of the crossroads," the captain explained.
"I'm sure you think you got this licked, Your Majesty," said Jonathan. "But trust me, you don't know what you're up against. Unlike you, I know her."
"I think you mean 'knew'," Grimhilde corrected.
The captain took Jonathan to the dungeon.
Grimhilde went down to her secret lair and opened one of her books.
"'Poisoned Apple, the Sleeping Death,'" she read. "'Antidote, True Love.'"
She laughed and grabbed an apple. She dipped it in a bubbly blue liquid, all the while her crow hissed.
She pulled the apple out, and the liquid slowly dripped off. The apple took the form of a skull, then turned shiny red.

There was a flash of lightning.
"I don't like it," said Grumpy. "It's too dangerous with the queen's guard out there looking for you."
"We could come with you," Doc offered.
"Do you really have to go?" asked Bashful.
"I have to do this," Snow insisted.
"When this is over, you will come back, right?" asked Happy.
"I will. I promise."
The dwarves waved goodbye and marched off.
It didn't take long for Snow to find the stream.
She was immediately surrounded by guards.
"Put your hands up!" the captain ordered.
He threw a necklace down on the ground.
Snow looked at it and gasped. "Jonathan."
Snow did as she was told. She then noticed some animals nearby, and she motioned for them to go. The animals turned and ran.
Jonathan sat alone in his cell. The place was dark, dusty, and full of skeletons.
Grimhilde approached him and offered him a shiny red apple.
"Here, take it," she said. "You must be starving."
Jonathan was hesitant, but then his stomach rumbled, so he took it.
The dwarves were about to get on their carts when a bunch of forest creatures surrounded them.
A bird landed on Dopey's finger and chirped frantically. His eyes widened in realization.
Snow dodged a guard's attack and made him trip. She then took his sword and clashed with one of the others.
The dwarves got on the deer and rode off.
"Hurry!" Doc urged.
Jonathan took a bite out of the apple, then he started to feel strange.
Snow knocked two guards to the ground.
Jonathan fell onto his knees, then he fell into a deep sleep. The apple slid out of his hand. Grimhilde made a wicked grin.
When the dwarves finally found Snow White, they saw her standing with a sword in hand, while a bunch of bodies laid around her.
"Snow White, what happened?" Doc asked as he dismounted. "Are you okay?"
"I'm okay," Snow assured. "But Jonathan got captured."
The dwarves gasped.
"What do we do now?" asked Happy.
A tiny snowflake came down from the sky and landed on Snow's finger.

All the guards had gathered at the drawbridge. Two of them approached Snow and pointed their spears at her.
"I believe you're looking for me," said Snow.
Then Grimhilde showed up.
"As a matter of fact, I believe it is you who is looking for me," she corrected before turning to the guards. "Stand aside."
The guards lowered their weapons and backed away.
"This is my father's house," said Snow. "You stole it from him, from all of us. Now we're here to take it back."
Grimhilde turned to the townsfolk. "Pretty, isn't she?" She summoned a rose. "Delicate, elegant, exquisite." She turned it to ash. "You think you want a flower, but a flower wilts, a flower dies. That's what happened to your last queen and king. That's what happened to him."
Two guards came out with Jonathan's dead body. They threw him on the ground. Snow stood there, horrified.
"It cannot give you what I can give you." Grimhilde continued as she summoned a dagger made of pure diamond. "Perfection, power, beauty." She cut Snow's cloak and offered the dagger. "If you want the throne, take it."
Snow looked at the dagger, then back at the queen. All the townsfolk watched in anticipation.
"They're waiting," said Grimhilde.
Snow dropped the dagger, then she approached Jonathan's body and kneeled.
"I'm sorry, Jonathan," she whispered. "I'm sorry I couldn't save you."
Her hand met his hand. She closed her eyes and let out a couple tears.
Then Jonathan opened his eyes and sat up. He and Snow looked at each other and smiled.
Then they shared a soft, tender kiss.
All the while all the guards and townsfolk watched.
"Enough of this!" Grimhilde shouted. "Guards!"
Two guards separated Snow and Jonathan. Grimhilde picked up the dagger and gave it to the captain.
"You, kill them!" she ordered.
The captain approached Snow and Jonathan.
"Paul," Snow said, making him stop. "You were a farmer in the Western Vale. You have a husband, Walter. You had a grove of cherry trees and when they would blossom, you would invite the village to come and pick them, to share them." She then turned to another guard. "Matthew, you were a baker, just like your father. You never turned anyone away if they were hungry, even if they didn't have a coin left in their pocket."
"Enough," Grimhilde said.
But Snow addressed the guards restraining her and Jonathan. "Arthur, William, I remember you, all of you."
"I said enough!" Grimhilde repeated.
"There was a time where we lived with hope, when good things were nurtured and allowed to grow. I remember, do you?"
"I remember," said Paul.
"I remember," said Matthew.
"And I," said Arthur.
"And I," said William.
"Leave, now, and never come back," said Snow.
Grimhilde snatched the dagger and aimed it at Snow.
Then an arrow hit the dagger, causing it to disintegrate.
They all heard a whistle.
Everyone turned to see the Seven Dwarves in the castle courtyard. Dopey stood in the middle, crossbow in hand.
"No," Grimhilde cried as she ran into the castle.
"It isn't true!" Grimhilde shouted as she ran to the mirror. "Look at me! I'm still the fairest!"
"Famed is thy beauty, but it goes no further than the skin," the mirror replied. "For Snow White, beauty comes from deep within, and so my queen, at last you see, she will always be fairer than thee."
"YOU LIE!"
Grimhilde smashed the mirror with her scepter. Glass shards flew all around her.
Snow White came in just in time to witness what was happening. The Queen slowly turned to glass. She reached out to Snow and screamed.
Then she got sucked into the mirror. The shards flew back into place, and the cracks disappeared.
