Work Text:
Ava was sick. and she was making it everyone else's problem.
it's not that the staff of the diner were *bad* at caring for their sick friend, or even that they disliked it. but Ava was being Ava. which means she was acting like everything was a billion times worse than it actually was, and absolutely refusing to do anything for herself. it wasn't quite to the point of someone else holding the spoon for her as she ate Gloria's *delicious* soup (a recipe passed down from her great great grandmother and always utilized when someone was sick) but she was pretty close to it.
as the third loud dramatic groan of pain was heard from Ava's booth within 10 minutes, Casper let out an annoyed huff of air.
"go see what she wants Casper " Gloria called from the kitchen "you know she won't stop until you do"
"of course not" Casper grumbled to himself as he walked around the counter "not like I could ever have anything better to do"
despite that, he wasn't really annoyed with her. he put on a good show of it, but -- and he would call you crazy if you ever said this out loud-- he did love Ava. including her dramatized groans and refusal to do work. against his will he loved her
Ava lifted the arm draped across her face to peer at caper as he approached "finally! what's a girl got to do around here for a glass of water?? I'm *sick*, practically dying, and you make me wait forever?"
"yeah yeah, how dare I walk instead of running. here's your water asshole " Casper handed her a glass of cold water, rolling his eyes when she made a show of struggling to sit up to take it "we all know your not that sick. would it kill you to be normal for once in your life?"
"yes Casper, it would" Ava said with a condescending look "I'm not ordinary, I'm *extra*ordinary. "acting normal" is simply not who I am" she took a sip of water, somehow making it look smug
"okay well, forgive me your highness" Casper couldn't hide a hint of fondness in his voice, though no one outside of the diner would have recognized it "I should be honored to serve you, is that it?"
"exactly. now refill my soup bowl." Ava said with exaggerating primness, setting down the glass "and make sure it's hot this time, not warm"
Casper sighed, heading back to the kitchen bowl in hand. as much as he might complain, he didn't truly mind Ava's......Avaness. and though she would NEVER ever ever ever admit it. letting him take care of her was Ava's way of showing her own love
