Reason that I had at number one (was I liked you)

Summary:

The sun was warm on their skin, and endless amounts of trees seemed to surround them in this clearing that they were stood in. Just a few feet away, there was one of those cutouts where they could put their faces in the holes of the characters on it. Phil was just about to turn to Dan and ask him to go over and take photos at it when a strangers voice cuts through to him,

“Hey, cool hat!” The man says, who sounds like he is a tourist as well from Australia. At least, that’s what Phil picks up on when ‘cool’ sounds more like ‘kewl’.

“Oh, thank you!” He replies, smiling.

“Where’d you get it from?”

Phil glances to his side, where Dan is now staring dead at him with a look that says ‘Lie, Please God lie,’ and it only makes Phil’s grin wider,

“Actually, it’s from my boyfriend’s show!”

aka Dan and Phil on their vacation & someone asks Phil about his We're All Doomed hat and he (embarrasses) brags about Dan.

Work Text:

A slight ring of pressure is the first thing Phil feels when he wakes up, followed by the feeling of Dan, sleeping next to him. After contemplating going back to sleep or trying to do something about the annoyance of his head aching for a few seconds, or even minutes, he sighs and opens his eyes. Phil blinks a few times, before turning towards Dan and lightly nudging him.

“Dan,” His voice comes out airy and scratchy, and after no answer, he shakes him with a little bit more force.

Dan,” Phil repeats, his voice cutting through the silence more than before this time, relieved to see as Dan stirs awake with a deep breath a few seconds after,

“What?” He replies, sounding about five seconds away from falling back asleep as he turns to look at Phil, even though his eyes are still closed.

“Do you think you could go grab my meds? I can feel the start of a migraine, but I'm really comfy and warm..”

That makes the other open his eyes, narrowed and slightly puffy as they stare right at him, silently asking him ‘Are you serious right now?’ But all Phil had to do to draw a smile out of his partner was furrowing his brows and tilting his head to the side.

Dan was mumbling complaints about how much of an annoyance Phil was and how early it was, even though it was only 09:04, under his breath as he stood slowly and made his way over to where they had hazardously thrown down their stuff the night before. Though, Phil could only smile as his boyfriend’s tone gave away how unaffected he actually was; too soft to indicate to him that he was genuinely upset. He smiles to himself as he sighs, sinking into his pillow again as he watches Dan rummage through his bag. He closes his eyes shortly after when a wave of intense pressure against the sides of his head comes over him, making him frown.

“Here, sit up.” Dan’s voice is careful as he leans on their bed, one hand holding two small pills and his water bottle in the other.

Phil is slow to sit up, balancing on one arm as takes the pills from Dan’s hand, putting them in his mouth as he scoots back and reaches with both of his hands now for his water bottle, taking a generous sip of water before swallowing. They both are silent for a few seconds following it as Phil’s shoulders drop and he leans back against the pillows, Dan staring at him the entire time.

“You think you’ll be good for today?” He asks, his stare unwavering as he watches Phil every movement, searching for any more indications of pain on his face or through his body language. It takes his partner a moment to answer, but when he does, he has to hold back a relieved sigh,

“Yeah, I think so. This just might be the worst of it and it will lessen throughout the day.”

Phil watches a grin form on Dan’s face as he reopens his eyes, though he doesn’t even remember closing his eyes for a second time.

“ ‘Kay. Since we’re already up, shall I call room service and order breakfast?” He asks him, in which Phil’ response is only nodding his head, before closing his eyes once again.

He flits through light sleep and simply resting his eyes as he waits for Dan to finish ordering for them and then for the food to arrive. Phil is only drawn out of it when he feels a warm hand against his cheek and the light tapping of two of Dan’s fingers,

“Hey, you’re the one who decided to start the day early. Don't be falling back asleep on me now,”

“ ‘M up, I’m up!” Phil is quick to respond as he can now smell the food that Dan had gotten them, which was being placed in his lap. He opens his eyes to the most appealing pieces of toast he's ever seen, with melted butter seeping into its golden-brown surface. He could already feel his mouth watering as he started at it, or maybe he was simply just really hungry and over exaggerating it, he was seeing it through his horrible vision after all. But none of that stops him from wasting absolutely no time in picking up the utensils given to him by his partner and digging in.

Phil makes an obscene noise after his first bite, which draws a curious look from Dan that he doesn’t see as he takes his time chewing his food and savouring the taste.

“Fuck, I think this is the best piece of toast i’ve ever had in my life. You have got to have a bite," is the first thing he says after he swallows, looking over at Dan as he moves his plate towards him, before turning to reach for his glasses on the side table. He can hear Dan let out a ‘careful’ as he shoves his glasses onto his face before turning back to the other, who is now cutting into the toast now. Phil watches silently as he takes his first bite, in which Dan sits still for a moment, as if he's processing what he's tasting before completely slouching forward as his shoulders drop once again, a similar sound to what he had made when he first took a bite as well emitting from his throat.

“Holy fucking shit. This has got to be the best fucking piece of toast I have ever had in my entire life, oh my god. We have got to come here more often just so we can have this for breakfast for more than only a week.”

Phil giggles in response as Dan basically copies what he had said previously, covering his mouth before reaching out for his food again. Dan almost begrudgingly hands it back over to Phil, and he doesn't complain a single bit as he continues to take pieces out of his bread after Phil himself has continued eating it.

This was their first official morning of their holiday in Vietnam, something that Phil had suggested that they do multiple times during recordings for their podcast with Dan. The thought of going somewhere warm and away from London’s gloomy weather and getting to go on new side quests with Dan was everything that could heal him and give his brain a good reset. After bringing it back up to him during their downtime, they decided whenever they had time, they were going to find somewhere to spend a week long holiday. Though, it wasn't until about a couple of weeks or so later that they got to actually do that. But that doesn’t really matter now, not to Phil anyways, because here they were now, somewhere warm where they can decompress from the stress and chaos that the new Hardlaunch era has brought them; not that he was complaining though, he’d never. It just simply got to its tipping point, leaving both Dan and Phil’s brains a little bit too fried when it finally came time to start packing.

After last minute packing and an early morning flight, they had made it, and now could enjoy waking up to the sun shining through their hotel window in crisp hotel bedsheets.

After some debating and a couple of complaints from both sides, they decided to book tourist activities for themselves starting on their first day. Though, they only had to start getting ready around noon, so none of them made any moves to get up til then. Except for cleaning up after themselves when they were done with their food, and Phil, grabbing his hat from Dan’s show, and putting it on his head to relieve him of the tightness on the sides of his head. But even then, they were still rushing a bit while they had to get dressed and ready to leave.

Everything works out in their favor though, as it usually tends to. They catch their Uber in time and are on their way before they know it.

They had booked a tour of the place a film they both loved was made, that from the photos and a rewatch of the movie, had some scenic views and even a few props from it still up at the location. It was planned to be an hour-long trip in a golf cart with a small group, with stops to get out and walk around a little, ending with a stop at the gift shop.

It was perfect, to them.

After they had arrived and checked in, they both allowed themselves a moment to simply take in their surroundings.

“Actually, it’s from my boyfriend’s show!” He answers, gesturing a hand towards the direction of said person, who’s now all tensed up,  gives an awkward, tight lipped smile towards the man when his gaze is on him. Dan is most definitely going to give Phil an earful on how he did not have to say that and how he knows, he knows that he doesn’t know how to react normally when he does this, but he doesn’t really care. That all awaits for future Phil, not him currently.

Plus, Phil would gladly take any chance to talk about Dan’s accomplishments and brag about him any day.

“Though, I reckon you’ll have a hard time trying to get one though because they’ve all been sold out,” He continues, looking back at the man before him, whose face forms into a look of surprise and disappointment,

“Aw man, alright. Can I ask what it’s about, though? Welcome to THE END is a bit morbid, but it makes me even more interested in what it is,”

The two go into it, with Phil enthusiastically explaining the concept of the show while Dan is standing next to him, tuning the conversation out and contemplating the results of simply just walking away from them and instead finding who is supposed to be touring them around, but in the end he knows he can’t leave Phil’s side. Or at least, he would rather do anything but that.

So, he sucks it up and tries to accept the praise from his partner and waits for this exchange to be over. Luckily for Dan, he doesn’t have to wait much longer when someone calls out that it's their time to go now. He watches as Phil and the man say their respective goodbyes, and gives the man a small wave as well before practically tugging Phil away.

“I think I deserve some emotional compensation for being forced to go through that.” He mutters not so quietly to Phil as they walk towards the start of their tour where multiple golf carts have been lined up. Phil laughs loudly in response, covering his mouth as Dan continues to complain to him.

It’s exactly what he had expected and more, and it makes something in his chest tighten. When they sit down in their designated golf cart, Phil reaches for Dan’s hand and squeezes it a few times, effortlessly shutting him up for a few seconds,

“Hey, I’m allowed to share my opinions on your show! And also, if you stop complaining, I’ll give you full reign of what we’re going to eat for dinner,” He says, and then watches as Dan processes what he had just said and practically lights up,

“Oh, okay. I’d quite like that actually,” He pauses, and Phil can basically see the cogs turning in his mind as he forms his next sentence,

“I’ll make sure to order something with ridiculous amounts of cheese then.” He teases, bringing out another laugh from Phil as he lightly hits him on the shoulder, only to be followed by a dramatic ‘Oww, that hurt!’

In the end, they have a nice time taking pictures and getting their steps in as they get to explore around a little. And later on that evening, they do end up going with Dan’s choice of food for dinner, which turned out to be amazing,, so in the end it was all worth it to Phil and he didn’t regret a thing.

anyways i hope you enjoyed!! this is my first fanfic for this fandom haha,,,

i actually started writing this on the day before the veitnam photo dump because of this thought i had after we got that little vid from monday and seeing phil in his WAD hat and everyone talking about it and i though. Hmm. I wonder what woud happen if phil wore that out and someone complimented it and asked where he got it? and my mind immediately went to phil just gushing about dan because Of Course thats probably the thing he would do. and i just thought it would also be really funny to torture dan and put him through his loving boyfriend bragging about him to someone else while hes standing Right next to him. #Lol!

also! the part about them touring a moving location is heavily based on when i did that in hawaii and When i tell you when the insta post came out i was like Holy fucking shit. this actually works out perfectly!!!! and not even to mention the. last video on the insta post,, aouaouaouaaouaouaouu.
