Work Text:
Mike was having the worst day ever.
He had an opening shift at the coffee shop, so despite the lack of sleep he got the previous night, he had to drag himself down 10 blocks at the crack of dawn. There must have been a hell of an exam week at the nearby university because they were busy all morning, and Mike wasn’t sure if he had spent more than five minutes in one spot.
To top it all off, when he finally got off his shift, his usual deli shop had missed the shipment needed to make his favorite sandwich, and as he trudged home, the sky had opened up and began pouring down on him.
By the time he had climbed up to the fifth floor of his apartment building, because of course the elevator was out of order, he had reached his limit. His sneakers made little squeaks and squelches with every step he took, and he knew he must be leaving behind a snail trail.
He wrestled with his misshapen front door before shoving his shoulder against it and stumbling into the small but comfortable apartment he shared with Will.
And oh, speak of the devil, his lovely boyfriend was home and curled up on the couch with a large mug and a fluffy blanket. At the sound of the door, he had perked up, his head swiveling as he glanced over at Mike, who felt as though he had dragged a storm cloud in with him.
“Mike! You’re soaking!” Will exclaimed, his voice rough, and he must have just woken up recently. His hair was all ruffled, and he seemed to be in his pajamas despite the fact that it was well into the afternoon.
Before Will could make a move to stand, Mike kicked his shoes off and hurried to the living room. As he approached the couch, he yanked at his heavy clothes, pulling the sweater over his head and shuffling out of his chunky jeans until he was down to his boxers. Will lifted the blanket as he anticipated Mike’s next move, though his eyebrows had climbed up his forehead in silent surprise.
Mike didn’t speak as he collapsed onto his boyfriend, curling up on his lap and pressing his head against Will’s chest. Almost immediately, the blanket came down over him, and he was cocooned in the warmth and familiar smell of Will.
“Hi, baby. Rough day?” Will murmured against his mess of dripping curls. His hand inched up to rub soothingly against Mike’s back, tracing the subtle notches of his spine.
“You could say that,” Mike whispered back, his words muffled against Will’s clothes, teeth chattering as he slowly began to warm up. “I missed you.”
“You are so cold,” Will clicked his tongue, before shuffling to move Mike off his chest, though not without a sharp noise of displeasure from the other boy.
Will paid him no mind and instead reached down to pull his hoodie off, before bunching it up and shoving it over Mike’s head. Mike’s mouth fell open in surprise, but he had no time to respond, his hands being grabbed and pushed through the armholes as he was manhandled into the hoodie.
The sleeves were slightly too short, and Mike knew that if he reached up, the hem would rise above his waistband, but he hardly cared. Not when Will was looking at him with gentle eyes, his lip pulled between his teeth as he reached up to card his fingers through Mike’s hair, making an honest effort to smooth down the frizz.
“Now you’ll be warm,” Will explained, smiling up at him, and all of Mike’s concerns melted away as he stared at the boy in front of him. “Better?”
“Yeah, just needed you,” Mike responded, burrowing into his chest. The blanket was wrapped tightly around him once again, but Mike was more focused on the way Will’s arm wound around his back, holding him close while his other hand was rubbing soothing circles on his arm.
“Did you want to talk about it?”
Mike considered the option, but ultimately shook his head. “Nothing really happened. I just had a shit day. But it doesn’t really matter anymore.”
Will just hummed in response, and his chest rumbled with it. Mike listened to the steady thumping of his heart, to the trickle of rain on their fire escape, to the gentle hum of the heater. They all came together to form a soothing harmony, a song of his home, and before he knew it, he was drifting off to sleep.
As Mike dozed off, Will was hardly concerned with the way his legs were falling asleep or the beginnings of the cramp in his arm. Instead, he pressed his cheek against Mike’s head and shut his own eyes, following the other boy to sleep.
