Chapter Text
The bell on the door lightly jingled as Scar stepped into the small cafe on orchard road. He had always passed this place on the way to work, smelling the fresh pastries and coffee, waiting for the opportunity to eat there, and now he finally had one.
His best buddy, Grian, suggested they have a nice coffee date...no, definitely not a date, I mean, they're best friends right...? Either way, it was just a small get together, have a little chat, eat a croissant or two, a nice Saturday afternoon activity. Of course, Scar jumped at that idea and was anticipating it all week, as he always does when he has plans with G.
Now, the wait was finally over, he walked into the cafe and tried to spot Grian. After a small scan (this cafe was no bigger than a corner shop), he determined that G was running a bit late....perfect. Scar inhaled lightly, its fine, he'll be here soon! Just a bit behind, things happen!!
Strolling a bit further in, he smelt those familiar pastries and his stomach grumbled slightly. God, was he hungry. His lunch hour at work had been moved to earlier in the day, and he was still not used to it. Every day after work he was absolutely starving, always stuffing his face the second he got home. Sadly, today was different, instead of eating immediately, he had to get ready for his date - or, uh....get together. That whole sequence of events led to the current situation of Scar barely being able to stop himself from just snatching food off of a random table.
His thoughts got interrupted as a waitress came to seat him. She was a short, blonde woman, wearing the cafe's uniform - a 50's style, polka-dot print midi dress and ruffled, white apron overtop. That was another reason Scar wanted so badly to eat here. The whole place seemed like it was frozen in the 50's, from the decor to the food. He always had a distinct love for vintage style's, even though the society back then was not the greatest.
The waitress sat him in a small corner boot, designed for probably around four people, but, then again, there was only about four people there in general. He took off his jacket and placed it on the seat next to him, along with the small bag carrying his wallet, keys and phone. For a few minutes he sat, turning to face the door every time someone so much as knocked the bell, until finally, Grian stepped in. G was still in his work scrubs, as he had only finished his shift about 10 minutes prior. Though, Scar did notice that he had done a little extra with his, usually tied back, hair. It wasn't that crazy, just combed a bit, maybe some gel in particularly stubborn areas. Whatever it was, it looked amazing.
G immediately spotted him and trotted over. "Scar!" he exclaimed, voice warm with fondness,"how've you been, bud?"
That sweet voice immediately brought a grin to his face. "Good," he replied "how's your work been?"
At the mention of work, Grian huffed sarcastically, then commented, with a headshake "tiring, as always"
Scar chuckled lightly, "I'm telling you, bud, you overwork yourself."
After he sat down, they continued chatting like this for a few minutes, discussing the average matters - work, friends, pets, y'know, the type of stuff you'd tell a co-worker. Then, their conversation was interrupted by the same blonde waitress who sat Scar bringing over their menu's. They flipped through hungrily, both in desperate need of both food and drink.
After his look through, Scar asked "sooo, anything caught your eye?"
He gazed over at Grian, who set down his menu and replied "yeah, i think im gonna get the chai latte or maybe strawberry milkshake, if I'm feeling it."
He nodded back with a small hum "I might just go with the classic espresso. Bit basic but, eh, who cares"
G snorted lightly "espresso? At 5:30pm? You are one crazy guy"
He responded with a shrug and a smug smile "thought you'd already know that"
They both flipped through a bit more and finally decided - chai for Grian and iced latte for scar(G managed to talk him down from the espresso).Their orders got placed and they got back to their usual talking. Discussions were quiet, however, they didn't want to disturb the small place's tranquility. It was more simple back and forths, catching up about whatever happened in the past couple months that couldn't be said in the messages app or short coversations in the supermarket. Scar told Grian about his brother's new job down the road, his new discovery of a slightly receding hairline, his new boss and her annoying assistant. Grian told Scar about his plan to get a new cat soon, his recent interest in photography, how he replaced his sofa. Every word either of them uttered was met by the other's open ears and curious interest, leading the talks to last all the way till their food was coming out.
Two butter croissants and a small jar of jam on a ceramic cat plate were placed infront of G, then the waitress put Scar's plate of chocolate-spread on toast in front of him, and tottered off to her other table or two. They dug in immediately, not even pausing to start the conversation until they were both finished with their food. Grian looked up and snorted, earning him a confused look from his companion and, instead of speaking, he just reached across the table and gently wiped the side of Scar's face. At the sudden touch of Grian's soft fingers, a dusty, pink blush spread across Scar's face. G continued wiping, explaing with a small smirk "you've got chocolate on your face, mate" That comment made his face heat up even more and he managed to squeak out a quiet "ah..thanks"
After that, the conversation continued as normal, though Grian was certainly still confused by that interaction. Why would he go so red? Could he maybe....? No, no way, even if Scar liked guys, no way was Grian his type! And, I mean, Scar had never dated a guy before, he's probably straight and G's just being delusional! But that thought can't help but stick in his head. The way the heat radiated from his face after only a small touch, the way he always listened no matter how mundane a topic was, it just led Grian to wonder.
Well, that could all be thought of later, either way, they still had half the date-no! Hangout left!
