Long Time Coming

Summary:

Heavy is the last one into Medic's exam room after a match, expecting nothing more than routine treatment. Instead, in the quiet aftermath of battle, a long standing tension between them finally comes to the surface. Something they've both been holding onto for far longer than either will admit.

Notes:

Hi! My first work and OF COURSE it's gotta be heavy/medic. CANT LIVE WITHOUT THEM

Also I'm no expert with Russian and German, so translations are made using a mix of Google Translate and Deepl

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Alright, Heavy it’s your turn now,” Medic called, pushing open the door to his examination room.

It was post-win for the RED team. Even though it was a win, the team still needed some patching up. Bruises, cuts, burns, all that harm was simply part of the job. And patching the team up afterwards was, of course, the doctor’s duty.

As usual, he would treat his own wounds first. A medic that wasn’t in perfect condition was hardly useful to anyone else.

Heavy, as always, was last. He always insisted on it every time. The rest of the team’s health was a priority over his own, his issues could wait.

The Engineer finally stepped out of the room, adjusting himself as he passed by. Heavy took his place without a word. Medic shoved the door closed behind them the moment he stepped foot inside.

“Up you go.” The doctor gestured towards the examination table where his colleague sat without a complaint. The table slightly creaked under his weight.

“Let us get you all cleaned up,” Medic hummed cheerfully, already reaching for gauze and antiseptic. “Rough out there today, ja?”

Heavy’s sleeve was torn, revealing a large cut across his forearm where the BLU Spy’s knife had grazed him earlier. Quick strike, quick escape.

Damn spies.

“Hm,” the German murmured with interest, leaning closer. “Not too deep. Very lucky!”

He began cleaning the wound with practiced precision. The scent of antiseptic filled the room as he worked, movements quick and confident. His glasses slipped slightly while he focused, and he nudged them back up absentmindedly with his wrist. Medic was always in a bubbly mood any time he was able to do any type of medical procedure. It was almost disturbing.

Heavy, on the other hand, was typically silent during these interactions. During examinations, he rarely spoke. He simply allowed the medic to do his work. And, despite the injury, the larger remained perfectly still.

Minutes later, fresh bandages were wrapped neatly around the mercenary’s forearm. The doctor stepped back, admiring his work.
“There you are! Good as new!” Medic chirped. He immediately turned away, strolling over to his desk to scribble something down onto a clipboard.

“Mm. Good work, Doktor,” the Russian rumbled, flexing his now good-as-new arm.

Danke (thanks)...pleasure as always.” he muttered, eyebrows pinched together as he continued jotting notes.

“Doktor?” Heavy slid off of the examination table and stood.

“Ja?”

“Doktor, Heavy asks favor.”

“Oh? Go on then.”

The larger hesitated briefly, earning a quick eye-brow raised glance from his coworker before he returned to writing.

“Kiss me.”

Medic froze. He slowly looked up from his notes where he was met with Heavy’s unwavering stare. For a brief moment, he simply looked at him.
He allowed himself to really look at him. He looked at the small scar across his brow. The steady calm in his blue eyes. The way he filled the room and his heart just by standing there.

The doctor cleared his throat abruptly, then chuckled.
“On your arm?” Medic teased, moving closer to Heavy. He lightly tapped where he had just treated with his pen. “Where you were hurt? Like mothers do?” He laughed light-heartedly.

He was more than happy to do so if it meant it would make him happy.

The Russian huffed and shook his head.

“No, Doktor.”

He stepped closer. Raising a finger to gently hook beneath the Medic’s chin, he lifted his head just slightly.

“Kiss me here.” Heavy tapped his own lips.
“...Was? (what?)” He murmured under his breath.

For once, the Medic seemed genuinely stunned. The confession was quite sudden. Of course, it wasn’t something that Medic hadn’t already thought of doing.

Medic and Heavy were particularly close. Especially in battle, they were an unstoppable duo. The tank and the healer.

Heavy had always favored his Medic over anyone else, and Medic returned that preference without any sort of hesitation. But what had started as a simple battlefield strategy had slowly turned into something…more. Something far more personal than just a professional partnership.

They ate together. Sat together. Walked together. In fact, most of the time, if one of them was somewhere, the other was not that far behind. Two very different men, yet somehow the bond between them had formed so quickly…and strongly. Strong enough to plant certain thoughts. Thoughts that Medic had entertained many times before.

Apparently, Heavy had as well. Their silence stretched longer and longer.

“Doktor,” Heavy said firmly, finally breaking the silence. Medic blinked in response. “Heavy did not stutter.”

“I know you did not,” he quickly replied, adjusting his glasses, then fidgeting with the pen in his hand. “It is just-”

“Just what? Intention was clear, да? (yeah?)”

Medic opened his mouth to speak, then closed it again.

There was a very long pause from the Medic, one that was extremely uncharacteristic of him. He just simply stared at him. For once, he had absolutely nothing clever to say.

He dropped his pen to his desk. The tap of it echoed through the empty room, making the silence even more uncomforting. His glasses slipped slightly down the bridge of his nose, he didn’t bother fixing them. Instead, he just looked up at Heavy. He really looked at him.

The larger stood there stiffly, shoulders tense, and hands clenched into fists at his sides. The silence became unbearable, heat creeping into the larger man’s face.

The longer the doctor said nothing, the redder the other’s face became. Heavy clenched his jaw and dropped his gaze.

“Прости (forgive me)...” He muttered quietly, turning to the door. “Heavy will leave-”

Before Heavy could utter another word, Medic suddenly grabbed the strap around his chest and pulled him forward. The distance between them vanished in an instant. The Medic kissed him.

The Russian froze in shock, eyes wide as the doctor pressed their lips together. For a brief moment he stood there, stunned. As for the German, he seemed determined. Eyes closed tightly, furrowed brows, but his expression read calm. He seemed focused, but at peace.

Then, Heavy’s surprise melted away too.

The tension in his shoulders loosened, the embarrassment faded just as quickly as it had come. His hand hovered awkwardly in the air for a second just before finally settling against Medic’s back.

The kiss lingered. Longer than either of them had expected. Longer than either of them wanted to admit. It was surely a long time coming.

When they finally pulled apart, it was the medic who was stunned now. His face was a very noticeable shade of red. He quickly adjusted his glasses with a shaky hand.

“A-ah-” Medic cleared his throat, avoiding Heavy’s gaze once more. “Well…uhm…”

The larger man stared at him for a moment. Then, he chuckled. A deep, warm rumble. A sound that made the doctor’s heart skip a beat.

“Doktor’s face is red.” He remarked in the same teasing tone that was used on him earlier.

Verpiss dich-! (Fuck off!)”  He straightened himself, dusting off his coat, but still refusing to look at the other.

“Heavy speaks no German, but knows Doktor is embarrassed.”  His laughter grew louder, and that made Medic’s face turn redder. Before long, he began to laugh too. He couldn’t help himself. There was just something about his laughter that was too contagious. After a moment, they stared at each other once more.

“You were brave to do that.” Medic said gently.

“Heavy was horrified.”

“Ja…I could tell.” He gave the Russian a large warm smile. “I was too.”

There was a moment of quiet between them, their eyes remained locked on each other.

“Doktor?”

“Ja?”

“Heavy meant it…”

Medic blinked and finally pushed his glasses back up. “...Meant what?”

“Kiss.”

The doctor stared at the ground, smiling sheepishly. He fidgeted with the corner of his sleeve and swallowed hard.
“...Ja.”

The silence lingered once more, but this time it felt warmer.

“Doktor?”

“Mm…?” Medic swallowed hard once more, finally meeting Heavy’s gaze again. The larger shifted closer, placing his hand on the other’s back.

“...I love you.”

The doctor froze. He examined the calm, sincere look on Heavy’s face. Then his expression softened completely.

“Ja…” he murmured. “I know.”

He reached up and tugged the mercenary down slightly by the collar of his shirt.

“And I love you too.”

The doctor kissed him again. This time, neither of them were nervous about it.
