The Lion Guard: The Shadow’s Step – Paths of Choice (Episode 3)

Summary:

As ancient symbols begin to spread across the land, Kion and both Lion Guards follow a mysterious path that leads them to forgotten ruins.
Inside, they discover a system that reacts not to strength—but to their choices.
When the path splits and the Guards begin to disagree, Kion must prove he can lead not one, but both teams as one.

Work Text:

Morning.
But not like before.
The air was quiet.
Too quiet.
Kion stood at the edge of the cliff.
Looking down.
At the valley.
The symbols.
There were more now.
Fuli stepped beside him:
“They didn’t disappear…”
Kion:
“No.”
Pause.
“They’re leading.”
Rani:
“Or leading us somewhere we shouldn’t go.”
Beshte leaned forward:
“They all point the same way…”
Makini:
“It’s not just direction.”
All eyes on her.
“It’s a route.”
Silence.
Kion:
“Then we follow.”
Fuli:
“Right now?”
Kion nodded.
“Together.”
And for the first time…
no one argued.
They moved through the valley.
Step by step.
The symbols guided them.
Fuli:
“I don’t like this.”
Bunga:
“I kinda do…”
Rani:
“Stay sharp.”
Suddenly—
“Stop.”
Ahead…
a silhouette.
On a rock.
Kion:
“Makali.”
He stood still.
Watching.
Kion:
“You’re leading us?”
Silence.
Makali turned slightly.
Then stepped aside.
Gone.
Fuli:
“That’s not a coincidence.”
Rani:
“He’s showing us something.”
Kion:
“Then we look.”
They climbed higher.
And stopped.
Before them—
ruins.
Ancient.
Broken.
Stone arches.
Collapsed columns.
Cracks.
And symbols.
Everywhere.
Fuli:
“This place…”
Beshte:
“It’s huge…”
Makini:
“Older than the Tree of Life…”
Rani:
“Someone built this.”
Kion:
“And for a reason.”
Wind moved through the ruins.
Creak.
Bunga:
“You heard that?”
Kion:
“Careful.”
They stepped forward.
Then—
the ground shifted slightly.
Kion:
“Don’t rush.”
Makini studied the walls.
“These symbols are different…”
Fuli:
“How?”
Makini:
“They’re connected.”
Rani:
“Like a map?”
Makini:
“Like a system.”
Kion:
“Then…”
Pause.
“another test.”
They moved deeper.
And suddenly—
a symbol on the wall…
glowed faintly.
Fuli:
“You saw that?”
Beshte:
“It’s glowing?”
Makini stepped closer.
“It’s reacting…”
Kion:
“To what?”
Pause.
Makini:
“To us.”
Rani:
“That’s bad, right?”
Makini:
“I don’t know.”
Another step.
Another symbol lit up.
Brighter.
Warmer.
Lines connected.
Fuli:
“They’re guiding us.”
Kion:
“Then we follow.”
He stepped forward.
The next symbol glowed stronger.
And suddenly—
a stone wall shifted.
A passage opened.
Bunga:
“Whoa…”
Rani:
“This better not be a trap.”
Makini:
“No…”
Pause.
“It’s opening for us.”
Kion:
“Then we’re doing it right.”
He looked at both Guards.
“Together.”
They entered the passage.
Symbols glowing along the walls.
Guiding them.
Step by step.
And this time…
no one doubted.
High above the ruins…
Makali stood on a broken arch.
Watching.
“They’re beginning to understand…”
Pause.
“But not everything.”
His eyes focused on Kion.
“The real choice is still ahead.”
He turned.
And vanished into shadow.
Deep within the ruins…
the symbols glowed brighter.
As if…
awakening.
Deeper in the passage…
the symbols glowed brighter.
Fuli:
“They’re not just glowing anymore…”
Makini:
“They’re reacting faster.”
Kion:
“Then we’re closer.”
Rani:
“Or deeper in a trap.”
Step.
Another.
Then—
the path split.
Three directions.
Left.
Forward.
Right.
Silence.
Bunga:
“Okay… that’s definitely not random.”
Fuli:
“So what now?”
Makini studied the symbols.
“They’re different…”
Kion:
“How?”
Makini:
“One is stable.”
“One is fading.”
“One is… changing.”
Rani:
“It’s a choice.”
Silence.
Kion looked at the three paths.
Took a breath.
“We don’t guess.”
Pause.
“We understand.”
Three paths.
Silence.
Tense.
Fuli:
“I say this one.”
She nodded left.
“Stable. Safest.”
Baliyo:
“No.”
He looked forward.
“Straight is faster.”
Rani:
“And more dangerous.”
Beshte:
“What about that one?”
He looked right.
Makini:
“It’s changing…”
Pause.
“I’m not sure.”
Bunga:
“Great. Three choices and none of them good.”
Voices overlapped.
Fuli:
“We need safety—”
Baliyo:
“We need speed—”
Rani:
“We need strategy—”
Noise.
Kion:
“STOP!”
Silence.
Everyone froze.
Kion looked at the paths.
Then at the Guards.
“We’re doing it again.”
Pause.
“Dividing.”
Fuli:
“But—”
Kion:
“No.”
Firm.
“We’ve seen where that leads.”
He stepped toward the symbols.
Studied them.
“This isn’t about the path.”
Pause.
“It’s about the decision.”
Makini:
“They react to us…”
Kion nodded.
“Then we don’t choose the ‘best path.’”
Pause.
“We make the path right.”
Silence.
Rani:
“How?”
Kion looked at all three.
“Together.”
He stepped forward…
toward the changing path.
Fuli:
“Kion—”
Kion:
“If it’s changing…”
Pause.
“…it’s reacting.”
Makini:
“That’s a risk…”
Kion:
“I know.”
He looked back.
“But we’re not alone.”
Silence.
Fuli stepped forward first.
“I’m with you.”
Beshte:
“Me too.”
Rani:
“Together.”
They moved forward.
And in that moment—
the symbols glowed brighter.
The path…
stabilized.
The path stabilized.
The symbols glowed evenly.
Calm.
The Guards moved forward.
Together.
Then—
the space opened.
A large chamber.
The heart of the ruins.
The walls were covered in symbols.
And in the center…
a large stone circle.
Fuli:
“This place…”
Beshte:
“It’s like…”
Makini:
“The center.”
Kion stepped forward.
And instantly—
the symbol beneath his paw glowed brighter.
Others responded.
One by one.
Rani:
“They’re activating…”
Makini:
“This is triggering something.”
Suddenly—
a low rumble.
The ground trembled.
Lines of symbols lit up stronger.
Connecting.
Fuli:
“Kion!”
The floor began shifting.
The chamber came alive.
But Kion didn’t step back.
He looked at the symbol.
“No…”
Pause.
“This isn’t an attack.”
Rani:
“Then what is it?!”
Makini:
“It’s reacting!”
Bunga:
“To what?!”
Kion looked at both Guards.
“…to us.”
Silence.
The rumble grew louder.
The light intensified.
And then—
in the center of the circle—
an image appeared.
Unclear.
But visible:
More places like this.
Across the land.
Makini whispered:
“This isn’t the only one…”
Rani:
“There are more…”
Kion:
“And they’re all connected.”
Suddenly—
the light vanished.
The rumble stopped.
Silence.
Fuli:
“That’s it?”
Kion:
“No.”
Pause.
“This is only the beginning.”
High above the ruins…
Makali stood in shadow.
His eyes distant.
“Now you see…”
Pause.
“But will you understand?”
He turned.
And disappeared.
Darkness.

To be continued…
