The Lion Guard: The Shadow's Step – The True Mark (Episode 4)

Summary:

After a series of strange events near the ruins, the Lion Guard and the Night Guard encounter a mysterious wolf named Chaguo. His actions seem suspicious, yet not entirely hostile. As tension rises and the ground itself becomes unstable, the Guards are forced into a dangerous descent. With trust breaking and doubt growing, Kion must make a difficult choice — one that could change everything.

Work Text:

The valley beyond the ruins.
Quiet.
Too quiet.
The Guards moved carefully.
Fuli:
“I don’t like this.”
Bunga:
“No one likes anything today…”
Rani:
“After what we saw, that makes sense.”
Kion stayed silent.
His eyes scanning.
Tracks.
Fresh.
He stopped.
“Someone’s here.”
Beshte:
“You sure?”
Kion:
“Yes.”
Pause.
Then—
a sudden movement.
Bushes shifted.
A figure burst out.
Fast.
Precise.
Grabbed something—
and landed.
Fuli instantly stepped forward:
“Stop!”
Rani:
“Who are you?!”
A wolf stood before them.
Dark gray.
Sharp eyes.
Tense.
In his jaws—a small rodent struggling.
The wolf released it.
It ran.
Gone.
Silence.
Fuli:
“He was hunting. Right here?”
Bunga:
“In front of us?”
Rani:
“That’s suspicious.”
The wolf looked at them.
Briefly.
Measured.
Kion stepped forward.
“Who are you?”
Pause.
The wolf:
“Chaguo.”
Silence.
Baliyo:
“And what are you doing here?”
Chaguo:
“The same as you.”
Fuli:
“We’re not hunting.”
Chaguo:
“Neither am I.”
Pause.
Fuli:
“We just saw—”
Chaguo sharply:
“It was injured.”
Silence.
Makini:
“You… helped it?”
Chaguo looked away.
“It wouldn’t survive.”
Bunga:
“That sounds like an excuse.”
Chaguo quieter:
“I’m not asking you to believe me.”
Pause.
“Just don’t interfere.”
Tension.
Rani stepped closer:
“You show up here, act strange…”
“…and expect trust?”
Chaguo:
“No.”
Pause.
“I expect you to choose.”
Silence.
Kion watched him closely.
Something…
didn’t add up.
Fuli:
“Kion, he’s hiding something.”
Baliyo:
“We don’t need trouble.”
Rani:
“We can’t risk this.”
Pause.
Kion didn’t answer.
He looked at Chaguo.
And Chaguo…
looked back.
No fear.
But no trust either.

Silence stretched.
Tension grew heavier.
Kion was about to speak—
when Fuli’s ear twitched.
“Stop.”
Everyone froze.
A sound.
Stone shifting.
From the side.
Beshte:
“Something’s there!”
Chaguo turned sharply.
And instantly—
ran.
Fuli:
“He’s running!”
Baliyo:
“I’m going after him!”
He dashed forward.
Rani:
“Wait!”
Kion:
“Stop! Don’t split up!”
Too late.
Chaguo vanished between the rocks.
Baliyo followed.
Fuli:
“I’ll help!”
She ran after them.
Bunga:
“Of course, now everyone runs! Great!”
Ono (from above):
“I see them! They’re heading toward the canyon!”
Kion:
“Rani, with me!”
Rani:
“Night Guard, move!”
Beshte:
“Careful!”
Makini:
“This feels like a trap…”

A narrow path.
Rocks.
Shadows.
Chaguo moved ahead.
Fast.
Sharp.
Baliyo almost caught up:
“Stop!”
Chaguo didn’t stop.
Fuli was close:
“He won’t get away!”
Then—
Chaguo jumped aside.
Gone.
Baliyo stopped—
“What—”
The ground cracked.
Fuli:
“LOOK OUT!”
The stone dropped.
Baliyo barely held on.
Fuli grabbed him:
“Hold on!”
He climbed back up.
Breathing hard.
Baliyo:
“That was a trap…”
Fuli:
“And he led us right into it…”

Kion and the others arrived.
Kion:
“What happened?!”
Fuli:
“He set us up!”
Baliyo:
“That was no accident!”
Rani:
“I knew it…”
Bunga:
“Yep, definitely ‘super suspicious wolf’ now!”
Ono:
“Wait…”
Pause.
“He didn’t run.”
All:
“What?”
Ono:
“He jumped on purpose.”
Kion:
“Where?”
Ono:
“Down.”
Silence.
Then—
a voice from below.
Chaguo:
“If I hadn’t done that…”
Pause.
“…you’d all be down there.”
Silence deepened.

Silence.
All eyes downward.
Chaguo’s voice echoed.
Kion stepped forward:
“Explain.”
Pause.
From below:
“See for yourselves.”
Silence.
Rani:
“This could be a trap.”
Surak:
“It is a trap.”
Nirmala calmly:
“Or a warning.”
Fuli:
“He already led us once.”
Baliyo:
“He won’t get a second chance.”
Then—
a shadow passed overhead.
Anga landed beside them:
“I saw it.”
All turned.
Kion:
“What did you see?”
Anga:
“He didn’t run.”
Pause.
“He was looking down… before the ground broke.”
Silence.
Makini:
“He knew…”
Surak:
“Or caused it.”
Nirmala:
“Or tried to prevent it.”
Tension.
Kion stayed silent.
Watching below.
Fuli:
“Kion, this is too risky.”
Baliyo:
“We can’t trust him.”
Rani:
“But ignoring this is also a risk.”
Pause.
Kion took a breath.
“We check.”
Surak:
“That’s dangerous.”
Kion:
“I know.”
He looked at both Guards.
“But we don’t judge without truth.”
Silence.
Anga:
“I’ll go first.”
Fuli:
“I’m with you.”
Beshte:
“Be careful!”
Bunga:
“Well, if it’s a trap… at least it’s interesting…”
Rani:
“Night Guard, ready.”
Nirmala:
“Calm is also strength.”
Surak:
“I’ll cover.”
Kion:
“Together.”

High among the rocks…
Makali watched.
His eyes cold.
“Doubt…”
Pause.
“…is the strongest weapon.”
He looked down at the Guards.
“They are already turning against each other.”
A faint smile.
“Good.”
Pause.
“Now… the real game begins.”
He stepped back into the shadows.
And disappeared.
They began descending.
Carefully.
Step by step.
Anga led from above, watching every movement.
Fuli moved fast but controlled.
Beshte helped Makini.
Bunga:
“Well, if we survive this, I’m telling everyone it was my idea.”
Beshte:
“It wasn’t your idea.”
Bunga:
“Details.”
Rani:
“Stay focused.”
Surak:
“Watch the edges.”
Nirmala:
“Breathe. Move steady.”
Kion stayed near the center.
Watching everything.
Watching everyone.
Watching the path.
And below—
Chaguo waited.
Still.
Silent.
They reached the bottom.
The air was colder.
Heavier.
Fuli stepped forward first:
“We’re here.”
Chaguo:
“I can see that.”
Baliyo:
“No more running.”
Chaguo:
“I didn’t run.”
Fuli:
“Sure.”
Kion stepped between them:
“Enough.”
Silence.
Kion:
“You said we should see for ourselves.”
Chaguo nodded slightly.
“Then look.”
He stepped aside.
Revealing the ground.
Cracked.
Unstable.
Deep fractures spreading outward.
Makini:
“This… was about to collapse.”
Nirmala:
“And not just a small section.”
Surak:
“The whole ledge.”
Anga:
“He’s right.”
Fuli frowned:
“That still doesn’t explain everything.”
Chaguo:
“It doesn’t have to.”
Pause.
“I stopped you from falling.”
Baliyo:
“By leading us here?”
Chaguo:
“By moving you.”
Silence.
Bunga:
“Okay, that’s still confusing.”
A low rumble.
Everyone froze.
The ground shifted.
Again.
Makini:
“It’s happening again.”
Surak:
“Positions!”
Rani:
“Stay together!”
Another crack.
Louder.
A section of the wall broke apart—
blocking the way back.
Dust filled the air.
Beshte:
“We’re trapped!”
Fuli:
“This just gets better and better…”
Kion:
“Calm!”
Silence followed his voice.
Strong.
Clear.
“Panicking won’t help.”
He turned to Chaguo:
“You said this wasn’t the worst.”
Pause.
“What is?”
Chaguo looked into the tunnel ahead.
Dark.
Deep.
“…movement.”
Silence.
Then—
a distant sound.
Stone shifting.
Slow.
Heavy.
Not natural.
Bunga:
“Nope. I don’t like that sound.”
Anga:
“Something’s coming.”
Surak:
“Defensive positions.”
Nirmala:
“Wait.”
She listened.
Focused.
“That’s not random.”
Makini:
“The symbols…”
Faint light began to glow along the walls.
Lines forming.
Connecting.
Kion:
“They’re activating again.”
Chaguo:
“They react to movement.”
Rani:
“Ours?”
Chaguo:
“…and something else.”
The sound grew louder.
Closer.
Fuli:
“Kion.”
All eyes on him.
Again.
The weight of both Guards.
Two teams.
One decision.
Kion took a breath.
Then:
“We move forward.”
Baliyo:
“Into that?”
Kion:
“Yes.”
Surak:
“That’s dangerous.”
Kion:
“So is staying.”
Pause.
“We don’t split up.”
He looked at both Guards.
“Not this time.”
Silence.
Then Rani nodded:
“Night Guard follows.”
Fuli:
“Lion Guard too.”
Bunga:
“Yep, staying together. I like that plan. Less falling.”
They moved.
Into the tunnel.
Symbols glowing brighter as they passed.
The path shifted.
Stones sliding.
Openings appearing.
Makini:
“It’s guiding us…”
Chaguo:
“Or testing.”
Fuli:
“Not helping your case.”
Chaguo didn’t respond.
Suddenly—
a sharp crack.
The ground split ahead.
A deep gap.
Too wide to cross easily.
Beshte:
“We can’t jump that.”
Surak:
“We need another way.”
Chaguo:
“There.”
He pointed.
A narrow stone edge along the side.
Unstable.
Risky.
Baliyo:
“That won’t hold everyone.”
Nirmala:
“One at a time.”
Kion:
“Fast and careful.”
He stepped forward.
“Fuli, you first.”
Fuli jumped.
Landed clean.
Anga flew across.
Beshte slowly moved.
Bunga:
“If I fall, remember me as brave!”
He slipped—
then caught himself.
“I meant extremely brave.”
Rani crossed.
Then Surak.
Then Nirmala.
Only Kion and Chaguo remained.
Kion:
“Go.”
Chaguo:
“You’re the leader.”
Kion:
“And you know the path.”
Pause.
Chaguo moved.
Carefully.
Almost across—
The stone shifted.
Cracked.
Fuli:
“Watch it!”
Chaguo slipped—
Kion jumped forward.
Grabbed him.
Pulled him up.
Both barely made it across.
Silence.
Heavy breathing.
They looked at each other.
This time—
different.
Light appeared ahead.
An exit.
Beshte:
“I see it!”
Bunga:
“Finally!”
They rushed forward—
The tunnel opened.
Fresh air.
Silence.
They were out.
The valley stretched before them.
Calm again.
Too calm.
Rani:
“We made it.”
Surak:
“For now.”
Fuli looked at Chaguo:
“This doesn’t change anything.”
Pause.
“…yet.”
Chaguo:
“I know.”
Nirmala:
“But it changes something.”
Baliyo:
“We’ll see.”
Anga:
“I’ll be watching.”
Bunga:
“Oh yeah, we’re definitely watching. A lot of watching.”
Makini:
“You know more than you say.”
Chaguo:
“…yes.”
Silence.
Kion stepped forward.
All eyes on him.
Leader.
Again.
“You’re coming with us.”
Pause.
Fuli:
“Kion—”
Kion:
“We need answers.”
Rani:
“And we need to understand what’s happening.”
Surak:
“I don’t trust him.”
Kion:
“You don’t have to.”
Pause.
“But we don’t leave him behind.”
Silence.
Chaguo:
“…that’s a risk.”
Kion:
“I know.”
Pause.
“But it’s my choice.”
Silence.
And this time—
no one argued.
High above the valley…
Makali watched.
Silent.
Still.
His eyes followed them.
“Trust…”
Pause.
“…built on doubt.”
A faint smile.
“They are exactly where I want them.”
He turned.
“The next step…”
Pause.
“…will break them.”
He disappeared into the shadows.
Darkness.

To be continued…
