baby steps

Summary:

Beomgyu and Soobin have a little bet going on about what their first pup will be; he has to be right every time.

Notes:

hi! if you're reading this just know the description of soogyu's pup is kept vague since the original intent for this hybrid's au is wherein babies (or also called pups/kits/kittens) are born as the animal of the same breed/type as their parents, so in this case soobin and beomgyu are dog hybridsand their pup is an actual puppy but you can imagine whatever you want in the end :3

honestly I am just expecting this to reach like five or ten people, which is 100% okay given that this is mine and arden's au and really soogyu aren't even supposed to be here for the first part at all... but I was craving soogyu

Work Text:

Beomgyu flushes the toilet a second time just for good measure. Groaning as he gets up on shaky legs, groaning again as his knees ache from how long he just spent kneeling by the toilet.

“You know,” Beomgyu says as he stands in front of the sink, lifting his—actually Soobin’s—shirt and looking at the small bump on his tummy. “By twelve weeks you’re supposed to be the size of a lime, but also…” he gently pokes his tummy a few times. “You’re not supposed to make daddy throw up anymore.”

He stares back at his reflection for a few seconds more, the corners of his mouth are still covered in… spit, but he looks at his tummy for a moment longer waiting for something, anything. The doctor told them they’re not supposed to see anything yet.

“Right, okay little lime, we are not calling me daddy.” Beomgyu says, finally letting go of the shirt, seeing it fall unceremoniously before he bends down to wash his mouth.

Except, the fucking faucet water tastes awful and it’s about to make him throw up again. “Oh for fuck’s sake!”

Soobin chooses that moment to wake up and walk in on Beomgyu retching over the sink now. He wants to tell him that he’s fine and not to worry, but of course he’s busy, being gross.

“Is your hair getting in the way? Do I hold your hair?” He wants to shake his head no, but the moment Soobin’s fingers are on him, threading his hair, fixing it behind his ear and then brushing against the base of his neck, Beomgyu can feel his whole body just settling. Feeling normal and whole.

Of course their baby favors Soobin already.

“I’m so disgusting, don’t look at me.” Soobin chuckles at that, that big warm hand of his now holding the back of his neck properly. The alpha must know it’s helping.

“Oh, my love, you’re not disgusting. I’ve seen you vomit plenty of times, even before we were pregnant.” His voice is calm, reassuring. Beomgyu stands up properly again and grabs Soobin’s bottle of mouthwash, slowly removing the cap and taking a sniff of it.

“You don’t look very pregnant, hyung.” The joke is so bad, but Soobin laughs, loud and hearty, making something sing within him.

“Sure,” Soobin says, one hand on Beomgyu’s lower back, starting to rub circles with his thumb, making him relax instantly. “I am not the one carrying our pup, but still I’ve seen you vomit before, and you’ve seen me vomit before too and still decided to marry me.”

Sweet, his mate, his husband, his Soobin is always so sweet and patient—working through Beomgyu’s small tantrums.

“If you say the word vomit again I will-” his body tenses as he feels a new wave of nausea course through him, but it passes in a second. He sighs and takes a few deep breaths. “Do you think our baby hates me?”

One second he’s joking and the next he’s blinking fast to stop his eyes from getting teary, all the hormones are messing even with his sense of humor it seems.

“No! That baby is half me so she has to be full of love for you too.” Soobin says, wrapping Beomgyu in his arms, and he takes that chance to turn towards the alpha and inhale his scent, letting his body calm down again.

“I love you, but stop saying we’re having a girl, you’re wrong our baby is a boy I can feel it.” Beomgyu nods, sure of himself, squealing in surprise when Soobin quickly brings one arm under his knees and the other holding his upper half, carrying him bridal style.

“Girl, boy, it doesn’t matter, it’s our baby, our family. I can’t believe we’re finally starting our family, like, properly you know.” His alpha is straight up beaming, cheeks flushed pink and dimples showing, Beomgyu brings a hand to Soobin’s face tracing that soft line on his cheek.

“Talk about properly, we were supposed to get married first before having our baby,” Beomgyu scoffs, pretending to be upset, even as he’s being gently laid down on their bed—their nest—he turns and presses his nose into one of the blankets in it.

Giggling when Soobin lifts his shirt—which is actually Soobin’s shirt, really—and presses a kiss to his still mostly-flat tummy.

“We were already planning our wedding, so I think that counts, besides that just means we have to wait less before we start thinking about having our second, and our third… and our fourth pup.” Beomgyu looks down to find Soobin looking right back at him, the omega doesn’t have it in him to continue pretending to be upset, running his fingers through Soobin’s hair instead, feeling the alpha rumbling before he hears it.

Right against his tummy, soothing Beomgyu and their future pup.

“What if I’m an awful parent? Or what if our baby doesn’t like me?” Soobin’s smile melts into something softer, shaking his head no, right away.

“Choi Beomgyu, I’ve known you since we were 6,” Soobin starts, but Beomgyu cuts him off.

“Actually I was 5.” Soobin rolls his eyes at him, pretending to flick his hand.

“I’ve known you since you were 5, and you knew we’d end up getting married since you were 8. Tell me how many kids we’d have and that all of them should have my dimples. All your life has led you here and all my life has led me to you.” Beomgyu has to look away already, blinking fast trying to stop his tears. “You’re my soulmate, the light of my life, a light in anyone’s life and everyone who has the pleasure to meet you, adores you. Our baby girl will love you too.”

“Yah!” This time Beomgyu is the one flicking Soobin, on the forehead. “I told you we’re having a boy, you need to stop contradicting me.”

But Soobin is laughing and he knows the alpha’s plan to distract him worked, no more tears spilling from his face and his heart beating loud in sync with his soulmate’s.

——Six months later.

Beomgyu is exhausted, not one million childbirth classes could’ve prepared him for how tiring the whole ordeal would be, all to push out one tiny small pup.

But it was worth it, after god knows how many hours their baby was born, the yells of the midwives yelling ‘push’ had all ceased at once and there was an instant emptiness that told him it was over.

“Soobin?” Beomgyu asked, turning towards his mate who was staring up ahead where the staff must be attending their pup.

“It’s okay, baby, the nurse says it’s normal, I can see our pup moving, it's okay.” The words are meant to be comforting, but Soobin looks more tense and stressed than he’s ever been in his life. Beomgyu looks down at where he’s holding his husband’s hand, the alpha’s fingertips looking quite pale where he really gripped onto him, and the wedding band shining strongly under the painful hospital lights.

Beomgyu refuses to look, to get out of it, and with doctors still moving around his body, only his mate’s reaction to guide him—and then, they hear it.

“Come on, little one, need to make sure your daddies can hear you,” one of the midwives says, and a second later, a cry, something so beautiful that it almost brings him to tears there and then.

They had kept their baby's gender a secret, both intent on their picks, but knowing in the end it didn’t matter. It was the moment of truth.

“It’s a healthy baby girl!” Beomgyu only gets to see the little shape of their pup wrapped in a bundle, his eyes becoming blurry with tears.

“She’s perfect,” he says quietly, and then. “Soobin, I think I’m going to faint now.” Right before his eyes shut.

“It’s okay, he’s stable, parent is stable, it's just exhaustion!” One of the doctors rushes to say, probably to soothe Soobin, but Beomgyu can’t do much but fall asleep for now.

The next time he wakes up, he’s no longer under the magical effect of super heavy dose anesthesia, so his body feels sore and weird all over.

Soobin is there all throughout, telling him he was able to see their pup again and that she’ll be brought over soon.

Watching closely and feeding Beomgyu small spoonfuls of seaweed soup and the rest of his meal until it’s all gone, both of them were surprised by the omega’s appetite.

“I told our parents we need a few hours just the three of us, but I can call your mom if you want,” Soobin offers once Beomgyu feels like a normal human being again.

“No, good call. I want to see our baby first. Can we see her now? I ate everything, I took all the meds, I want to see her.” Beomgyu doesn’t care that he’s pouting and whining, using his omega charms to make his mate anxious about his needs. Urging him to please him.

The alpha nods and is about to leave the room, probably to egg the nurses about it again, only to return a mere four seconds later with their pup in his hands and a nurse following right behind him, pushing the small temporary cot for their pup.

“Alright, daddies, one healthy pup, ready for her first latching too, press this button if you need anything at all, okay? I’ll leave you with your pup!” The nurse is thankfully quick to leave as promised, and then there’s Soobin moving closer and placing their pup into his arms.

Beomgyu can’t help but cry again at how perfect their pup is, touching her small face and her small body. He’s exhausted and sore, and yet the moment his little pup moves her face towards Beomgyu’s finger, he feels invigorated again to feed her.

“Don’t want any visits yet, but you can start calling our parents and Taehyun to let them know,” Soobin looks at Beomgyu and their daughter, smiling like an idiot.

“I’ll be right outside then, my love.” The alpha says quietly, with that huge smile still clinging to his face as he starts calling their family.

“Nine months in my womb, making me suffer and vomit, and you look exactly like your dad,” Beomgyu jokes, looking down at the small pup as he opens his robe to start feeding her. “You’re lucky you’re extremely cute and that I love you. Choi Haerin.”

The pup barely makes a sound as she latches to him, small and delicate as can be, and just perfect.
