Jack’s petting his head and telling him what a good boy he is, how he is doing so well in a hushed, soft voice he knows no one else gets to hear. It’s so intimate, this place in their lives he’s been let into. His sleepy, blissed-out brain begs the question again: What is this? How could this be anything but love? The thought repeats like a mantra, and tears spill from his closed eyes again.
