Spearmint gum tastes like weed when overchewed.

Summary:

Primehood fic obviously. First time writing on ao3, no beta read. I cant seem to figure out tags so forgive me.

Smoking cigarettes as the clock strikes 12 isn’t something most people look forward to, especially on new years day(night?). New year new me maybe wasn’t the motto at hand, but maybe it did have something else in store for them.

Notes:

Sorry!! I cant figure out tags and I haven’t written a fanfiction since like 2022..? Maybe longer. Not beta read and i was half asleep so theres probably tons of grammar mistakes, point them out to me and I’ll fix them. Doubt anyone’s gonna find this though lol. superboy prime has become my new obsession lowkey. Ok sorry!! Enjoy even if its buns.

Work Text:

Lighting a cigarette first thing as the clock strikes 12 isn’t something a lot of people look forward to. Fortunately, for Jason Todd, Superboy Prime was like a built in lighter, with his stupid laser vision or whatever. Always attached to him, seemingly by the hip, and disgustingly annoying.

“Are you gonna back up yet?” Jason snarkily remarks, before taking a long drag out of his cigarette.

“You wish.” Prime smirks, before glancing back at the busy street below the two of them. People cheering, fireworks erupting, couples kissing, and most importantly (atleast to Prime), the soft glow of the yellow street lights reflecting onto Jason’s face. Jason looks over at prime, letting the corners of his mouth turn upwards before blowing smoke in Superboy Prime’s face.

The kryptonian had greedily inhaled the smoke into his lungs, the soft trace of the mint gum Jason had been chewing early somehow embedding itself in the smoke. A fit of coughs erupted from the shorter of the two (though, there isn’t much of a height difference).

“Is something wrong with you? Inhaling smoke cannot taste any good” He’d choke out, still trying to catch his breath.

“Nah, the spearmint gum smells good though.” Maybe not noticeable to a normal human, with senses of lessened level. Perhaps being of a higher being did have its positives.

“How did you even—Whatever. You’re such a dork.” A small smile arised on his face, but just as quickly as it was there, it was then gone. Prime stopped thinking for just a moment, focused on the smile that was like a ghost in a graveyard.

Holy shit. He’s gorgeous. Prime thought to himself, unable to even think of a snarky remark. Jason simply tossed his cigarette aside, suddenly feeling as if the space on the small fire escape just got smaller. His knees already semi-pulled to his chest, and the feeling of the cold metal grid beneath his hand.

Prime had a conflicted expression on his face. What even were he and Jason? Labels were something never necessarily discussed, as when he met the then boy, Laurie was yet but a distant memory. Now, he couldn’t even remember what colour her eyes were. Yet, the  behavioural patterns of Jason seemed imprinted in his mind, the weird semi-smirk he’d do when attempting to be cocky (and failing), the way his heart beat went from a loud pounding in his chest against his ribs to a soft thump whenever Prime was in his field of view, the way he would breathe in a deep breath, followed by shallower ones to not seem desperate and greedy for air.

Maybe he was smitten. Maybe he liked it. What does it matter? The reader that’s reading this anyway is here for a reason, but Clark seems unable to figure out what’s gonna happen on the next page, when weirdly, he’s always been able to do that. The space between the two men seeming to grow smaller by the second.

“You know, your eyes sometimes change color. Obviously you have laser vision and all, but sometimes they’re more icy blue than they are ocean blue.” Jason remarked, glancing over at Prime, just to be met with two seemingly azure coloured eyes. When did he become so pretty?

His blue-black hair reflecting with the golden glow of the street lamps below had made him look like an angel. Ugh! That’s weird, and if he knew what I was thinking he’d probably call me something weird. Jason thought to himself, maybe the weird readers Prime was always on about could see them. Maybe they couldn’t.

Prime simply kept looking at Jason, a love-struck expression gracing his features. If only Jason knew how much he wanted to combine them into one person, be underneath his skin even if he were able to. The thought of it making him feel warm and gooey, being stuck with Jason forever seemed like a feat he wouldn’t have minded, but seeds of doubt have always been planted in the garden in his mind.

Does Jason really even like hanging out with me?

“Clark. Stop with whatever bullshit is running through your mind.” He scooted over into Prime’s lap, and cupped the other’s face, the tears falling onto his flushed face becoming more apparent as Jason attempted to wipe them away.

“are you sure you don’t hate me, jay? i can’t imagine my life without you” He spat out, pathetically. All the while, Jason had the most love-struck expression on his face.

“You’re a dork, you know that right?” Jason snickered before peppering soft kisses against Prime’s face, the taste of salty tears engulfing his mouth.

Prime had pulled him impossibly closer, he waited for Jason’s heartbeat to count 2 beats, eventually kissing him on the lips. Something they’d always been beating around the corner to. It was sweet, soft, kind. Jason had always smelt like home, but now he knew for certain, he tasted like it too. Jason had become his home, whether he was willing to admit it or not.

Jason pulled back after a second. A dazed expression on his face.

“You taste sweet.”
“You taste like home.”

“So.. what does this make us?” Jason had asked, his voice seeming impossibly smaller, making him seem very out of character.

“Whatever you want us to be, im ready for anything.” As long as I have you by my side.
Clark refrained from saying that last bit out loud.

“okay.” Jason whispered before planting another soft kiss on Prime’s lips, as Clark had eventually deepened it.

Maybe the new year did have something in store for them. The two weirdos who watched the countdown happen on their fire escape balcony. But maybe, just maybe, they loved being weird together.
