You'd pulled plenty of foolish stunts in your short lifetime. From playing sick to skip chapel to riding with one foot in the curve of your saddle just to make your nephews laugh--you were blessed to get away with most of your nonsense, save for the occasional lecture from your sister-in-law and busted bones. Even black and blue, you'd move mountains for the family you had left.
You did, evidently, draw the line at giving them a heads up when you up and vanished to California.
