Chapter 1: bottom of the barrel

Chapter Text

Trevor woke up to the feeling of an aching headache. His head felt like it was splitting open. It was dark out, and the moon outside his window was lighting up his room in grey streaks beautifully. It was surreal. It reminded him of someone in a way—Finn, his boyfriend. It looked something like how he would act. The soft glow of the moonlight showed how caring he was, the light grey, bluish light reminded him of his laugh—how it would start out soft but gradually get louder, similar to how the light of the moon would often appear to change colors, sometimes looking almost blue while others almost looking purple. He took a minute to admire the light pouring in from outside, but had to get painkillers.

He climbed out of his bed and padded towards his door, opening it with a squeak. As he walked down the hall, he noticed how peaceful it was at this time. With everyone in the house asleep, he could really hear the soft buzz of the heater, the gush of wind lightly blowing through the cracked-open window, and the soft crunch of his footsteps on the carpet. As he made it to the stairs, he could hear how his steps made a small creaking sound, how the sound of his breathing was the loudest thing in the room. It was pleasant, tranquil.

He stepped into the kitchen and walked to his glass cabinet, grabbing one and walking to the fridge to fill it up. After filling the glass, he got Advil out of the drawer and popped them in his mouth, washing them down with the water in his hand. He drank the rest of the glass, and put it in the sink.

He decided to just stand there for a minute. Even through the peace, the hushed room was giving him a gnawing feeling that didn’t seem to have any reason. It just felt… wrong. Like something was going to happen.

He then heard a soft knock on his door. He pushed himself off of the counter he was leaning on and softly made his way to the door. He opened the door and…

His boyfriend collapsed onto him, sobbing and clawing at his back. Trevor froze. It was the middle of the night. What happened?

Finn tried to get the words out to explain, but all that came out were whimpers and whispers.

”I— what, Finn, what happened?” he urged.

”I got— I— I got kicked out…” his boyfriend managed to whisper through sobs and hiccups. Trevor’s eyes widened.

“Oh, Finn, no…” he murmured back. “Here, come to my room.”

Trevor pulled his boyfriend into his lap, holding him tightly and allowing him to shove his face into his shoulder and cry.

“I— I don’t know what to do, Trevor!” He wailed.

There was a towel shoved under the door to muffle the sound of someone else being in his room, but he wasn’t sure if it was really working.

”Shh… shh, it’s okay, Finny. We’ll figure it out.”

”Wh— what do—“ his voice broke off into a sob as he hugged Trevor tighter.

”Don’t worry, it’s alright, you’re alright…”

Finn’s sobs were making Trevor’s heart shatter piece by piece. He was trying to hold it together, too, but he knew his boyfriend needed comfort.

”It’s okay. It’s okay.”

His shoulder started to feel less wet, and Finn seemed to be relaxing. Trevor played with his hair and rubbed circles on his back. Once his wails and sobs quieted and all that was left were hiccups, Trevor finally had the courage to ask the question that had been nagging at him.

“How did you get kicked out, Finn..?”

Finn lifted his head and looked to the side.

“My dad found out about us dating.”

”What? How did he find out!?” Trevor exclaimed.

“Took my phone… looked at the messages," Finn replied.

”Did you get it back? What about the rest of your things?”

”He broke it, and I’ll have to get my things sometime soon, I can’t go back and stay there..”

“I’m so sorry…”

He seemed to think for a moment before speaking.

”Stay here.”

Finn’s head shot back to face Trevor immediately.

”A-actually?”

”Yes. I think my dad will be okay with it.”

Finn started tearing up fast.

“No, no! Don’t cry again, Finny!”

”F— Finny?” He smiled.

“Shut up…”

”No, it’s cute, I like it!”

Trevor gave his forehead a soft kiss.

”Okay, let’s go to sleep.” He decided.

”Love you..”

”I love you too.”
