Odysseus was at war. When he left, Telemachus was barely 10 months old. Neither he nor Penelope knew at the time that she was expecting... Penelope was pregnant.
Odysseus would go on, believing he was fighting for his wife and son, not knowing that now he was also fighting for his daughter.
Odysseus claims that his real wife knows he doesn't have a daughter... so how will he take the news upon his return that in reality it was the other way around?

Penelope was overjoyed at the news. However, as her due date drew near and the war waged on, her excitement was slightly tainted... her husband would not be home for the birth of his daughter.
Penelope went through with just her maids and her toddler son. Goodness, her son didn't even understand truly. She was happy with his joy at being an older brother, perhaps for now, that would be enough.
Penelope waited. Raising both young royals and running the island. Ithaca waited but the men of the island grew impatient.

The small family, missing a patriarch, witnesses each others joys and sorrows. They shared a hope. They ran an island. They lived on...
Her first words...her first steps... he missed it all...
