Work Text:

It was over.

He could rest.

When Gojo woke up, it was to the sound of birds chirping above him. He opened his eyes to see blue skies, and for a moment he forgot what had gone down.

It wasn’t until a familiar voice called his name, when everything came flooding back to him.

“Satoru.”

Gojo instantly sat up, searching around frantically for the person the voice belonged to.

His eyes eventually landed in a figure in baggy clothing standing not too far from him, hair long with the top half into a bun and a piece at the front, over his face.

Suguru.

Gojo, putting all of the death and destruction the other man had caused aside, ran to Geto and practically tackled him in a hug. He heard Geto laugh when they were pressed together.

“Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God.” Gojo kept repeating. Tears escaped his eyes and were absorbed by Geto’s clothing.

“Suguru, fuck, I-“ He started, but was cut off by a sob.

“Shh, it’s okay. Don’t speak. I’m here now, Satoru” Geto soothed, brushing Gojo’s white hair back.

“I’m sorry.” Geto began. “I know that doesn’t solve anything, but I thought of you every day, wishing that either you or I could’ve done something different, to try and change the outcome of what happened.”

“I thought of you, too. And I’m sorry, I knew that something was different about you when we were students, but I didn’t do anything.” Gojo replied, trying to speak through tears.

“I should’ve spoken up, told you and Shoko what I was feeling. But talking about it now won’t change anything.”

Gojo nodded and lifted his face up from Geto’s shoulder. He wiped the younger’s tears away and held his face in his hands.

Both men smiled at each other despite the tears cascading down their faces.

“I’m actually almost glad that you died.” Geto said, bringing a laugh out of Gojo.

“And why’s that?”

“Now we’re together again.”

Megumi winced at the bright light above him as he gradually began to wake. Once his eyes had adjusted to it, he could make out a blue sky and clouds with birds chirping in the distance.

He slowly sat up and looked around the unfamiliar place, trying to find out where he was.

Is this where we go when we die?

He then heard footsteps banging on the ground towards him, and he looked up. His breath caught in his throat when he saw who it was.

“Megumi!” The voice shouted.

It was Gojo.

At the sight of his eyes and hair, everything came flooding back to Megumi. He suddenly found his breath hard to find, and tears began building up and stream down his face.

Megumi’s hands began hovering over his chest, shaking. He kept on shaking his head, trying to come to terms with everything and clear it.

But it was no use.

By the time Gojo had reached him, he couldn’t breathe at all. He was making high-pitched noises, not having enough air to fully sob.

The older man called his name a few times, but Megumi couldn’t hear him. He felt hands on his back sit him up, and he was then pressed against someone’s chest.

Megumi knew it was Gojo holding him, so he brought shaky hands around his torso.

“It’s okay, Megs. Breathe, I’m here.” Despite the comforting words, Gojo was panicking himself. Never before had he seen Megumi this distraught.

Megumi continued to shake and hyperventilate in his arms, and Gojo began looking around for some backup.

“Suguru!” He called. When he saw Geto running toward them, he turned his attention back to Megumi. “Shh, breathe. It’s okay, you’re okay, everything’s okay. You’re safe here, Megs.” He pressed a chaste kiss to the top of the boy’s head.

Geto reached them and, after looking panicked for a second, joined the hug. He rubbed Megumi’s back and hair, following Satoru in whispering reassurances to him.

He didn’t know the boy, but based on how close Gojo seemed to be with him, he gathered that he was important to him.

Megumi’s breathing eventually began to calm, and he finally had enough air to sob.

“There you go. Let it happen, don’t bottle it up.” Gojo told him, patting his back while Geto stroked his arms.

Megumi eventually looked up, still crying, and Gojo wiped the tears from his eyes, just like he had done for Geto.

Megumi turned around and, when he saw the unfamiliar man, turned to looked at Gojo with slight confusion.

“That’s Geto, I knew him in high school.” He told him. He wasn’t going to get into everything that had happened, and Geto seemed to think the same thing.

“Are you alright?” Geto asked him. Megumi nodded, though his breath and hands were still quite shaky. Gojo brought him into his arms again, placing one hand against the side of the boy’s face and pressing the other side against his chest.

He leaned down and placed his cheek against the top of Megumi’s head, where he had kissed earlier.

“I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.” He whispered, rocking his boy back and forth gently.

“I missed you.” Megumi eventually spoke through tears.

“I missed you, too.”
