Never let it be said that May Grant can't handle herself.
She's good at handling herself, and other things.
She's good at handling other things, even. Got used to it pretty quick after high school ended and a tsunami wrecked L.A. She was a 9-1-1 dispatcher for several months during her gap year, for God's sake. She's fully equipped.
And, not to mention, she's Athena Grant-Nash's daughter. She's got a mean glare and a mouth and she knows how to use them.
That being said, though, sometimes….
Sometimes, she does need help. She's not totally invincible, no matter what her brother Harry will tell you. Harry grew up thinking the world of her, and now he's gonna be a firefighter. Just like their step-dad. Now May's the one proud of him, more often than not.
Now though, she's on a date. It's a first date.
It's not a great one.
This guy is not going to get a second date out of her.
He's way too handsy and keeps flirting with her with these godawful "jokes" that she stopped fake laughing at five minutes ago. Not that he noticed.
May's ready to call it quits. But he drove her here, and she's even more annoyed about it than she was earlier now. He keeps eyeing the waitress.
May looks around, searching for a familiar face or a way to get out of this without getting herself more endangered than presently.
They're at a club of all places. So it won't be easy to find one of her married family members here.
But one thing that she kept forgetting about was that not all of her family members were married. That's when she spots him. "Oh my god, that's my brother, excuse me Clark." She says, a fake smile plastered to her face that eases back into a real one as soon as she sees Buck coming closer.
"Mayday!" Buck greets her with a hug. He seems to be alone, but he's a six foot muscle man. He's more than good enough to suit her purposes. "Are you on a date? What are you doing here?"
"Buck, thank God you're here." May relaxes into his hold. "I'm on the first date from hell. I need you to get me out of here. I told him you're my brother."
Buck's eyes narrowed. "Do I need to kill him?" he offers, too nonchalant. That smile on his face is all too willing.
It startles a laugh out of her anyway. "No, I just want to get out of here." May says, shutting her eyes.
Buck keeps an arm around her middle from the hug, loose but secure. "I got you." he promises. And proves he does by walking with her back to her date's table.
"So I don't know if you know this, but Mayday here isn't allowed to date yet. You could have gotten her in serious trouble, Dick." Buck greets Clark, both eyebrows raised in challenge. "And taking her to a club when she's not old enough to drink?" He's lying, they both know that she's been drinking for a couple months now. "That's bold of you, Dick."
"My name's Clark." Clark huffs. "She said she was old enough to drink." He defends himself, glaring at her. "Was I not supposed to take her at her word?"
"I wasn't calling you by your name, Dick." Buck says so cheerfully that Clark has to blink to try and discern if it was an insult. "We're leaving. Make sure you pay for her tab as well as yours, or I will be back. Ta, Dick." Clark is still trying to decide when Buck hurries May outside of the club.
"You're free, Mayday. Do you need a ride home?" Buck asks, loosening his grip around her waist. But she wraps her arms around herself, and he tightens the hold again.
"Yes please. Thanks, Buck." May responds, her eyes softening as she takes in his jeep, trusty as ever on the side of the road. "He wanted to show off his new car, so he drove me here. Then he wouldn't leave." May explains.
Buck groans, "He's the worst. I can't believe you went out with him." Buck helps her into the Jeep, then gets in it himself. "The night was getting boring anyway. I'm glad you felt like I could help."
"You always help, Buck. I know it wasn't exactly true when I told Clark you're my brother, but in every way but the bloodline, you are. You're always here to help." May earnestly tells him, her eyes tracking him as he gets into his car. "Mom brought two kids into the marriage. Bobby brought one."
"Bobby would have gotten you out sooner." Buck deflects, ducking his head. "I'm a pale substitute."
He goes to start the car but May's hand on his stops him. "Don't ever talk about my big brother like that again." May's voice is stern. "You got me out just when I needed you. I'm just glad someone was here, but to have it be you? You're always a knight in shining armor for the 118 kids, Buck. I don't think you realise that."
Buck fights back tears as he looks at her. "I will always be here for the 118 Kids. I made a promise to their parents to get them back to the kids, and always be there for their kids. I don't take that lightly."
"I know. No one doubts you but you, Buckaroo." May squeezes his hand. "Take me home, bro."
"You got it, Mayday."
