Chapter Text

BANG!

BANG!

SIZZ!

BANG!

It's so loud.

Derek chuckles. He can hear everything now. Everything. And he's trying to focus on the good.

He's trying.

It's some (countless...) kids first time seeing a firework. (BANG!) They're having so much fun. (BANG!) A few (innumerable) couples share a kiss. (SIZZ!) They're so happy...

He's jealous. Can you blame him? He just threw his soulmate off a cliff and his brain is running out his ears and they're so happy.

He's been crying blood for the last hour. How much longer...

People across all time and all sorts of endless realities are celebrating the New Year and holidays like it. BANG!

His head hits his desk.

The Universe is born. (BANG!) The first stars follow. (BANG!) They burn. (SIZZ!) They die. (BANG!)

It's so beautiful.

It all goes black.

Eyes open to the sight of a massive, elaborately carved castle hallway. Beneath him is a platform of cold, grey stone. He's standing on the middle of an odd golden sign.

Where is he? He stops to think...

...Nothing. Absolutely nothing comes to mind. Not even his name...

Fuck.

------

It takes him an embarrassing amount of time to figure out how to walk. It's like he is walking too smooth and shouldn't be able to trip but was capable of it anyway. Not to mention the added weight of his armor, witch he definitely isn't used to. He doesn't think he use to move like this... But he can't prove it because he can't remember anything!

Deep breath. Deeeeeep breath. He needs to think. If he wants to figure this out he'll need to keep calm.

After exiting the castle (and then gawking at it because holy shit who built this thing?!) he began down the path, checking inside the houses along the way. He found them disappointingly empty of resources, people, or any clues, regarding his currant predicament or otherwise.

For some reason, he was very fixated on the clues bit. Like the whole town could have been hiding something, or was a puzzle he could solve. But aside from the same golden sign in castle being used decoratively around the place, and apparently on his armor, no dice.

...Hm, those implications are interesting. But he can't investigate further right now due to more pressing matters...

He's getting hungry and there isn't any food here.

(He feels strangely stupid, like he knows the answer, like he figured this out already. But what could he possibly do here? Turn off his hunger?)

When he gets to river he swims though it, unpleasantly cold and wet by the end of it, climbs the bank, up the nearest, smallest hills, then stops when he sees it.

The Door.

The first thing he wants to do to it is burn it down. The second thing he wants to do is get a hold of himself. He can't burn down his only escape route, he'd be trapped! What is he thinking?! So heads to the Door and exits, ignoring the icy dread in his stomach.

He could notice many things when he walks though the Door. That the corridor is a large step down from the castle despite the other Doors, though still impressive. That the bridges are made mostly stone bricks. That the other Doors are notably smaller. But he doesn't notice any of that now.

Because the only thing his eyes seem to focus on is the hastily constructed wooden speedbridge leading to his Door.
