Most of the college classes were running short because of Easter coming up. Spring break is in two days. The girls all come home about an hour earlier than usual. Pouring in after classes. First thing they see is Adelaide at the dining room table putting colored tablets in small containers of vinegar while Misha is stirring three pots in the kitchen. “What’s all this, Mama?” Wendy asks as she drops her bags to look. The others join behind her.
“It’s almost Easter,” the older woman smiled as she glances at the colored tablets fizzing in the vinegar. Then looking back up at the girls. “Thought y’all would appreciate some egg colorin’,” she informs them.
“You’re too good to us, Mama.” Wendy giggled and leaped to hug Adelaide. Tracy jumped like a rabbit at the good news.
“Do you need any help, Mama?” Monica inquired as Wendy clung cheerfully to Adelaide.
“No, baby,” the older woman reassured, “But y’all need to put y’all’s bags away and change into somethin’ you won’ t mind getting dirty,”. Adelaide gestures towards the pots Misha is stirring. “The natural dyes should be done in 10 minutes, so give us 20,”. The girls start to rush up the stares. Adelaide glances at the peach haired girl in her kitchen. Misha responds “They liked the surprise, beloved,” her accent placing butterflies in the darker woman’s belly.
Adelaide nods and smiles wide enough to show her gums. “I’m so glad, Peaches,”. She brings her hands to her chest in a happy motion before asking the girl, “How’s the dyes coming along?” she starts to walk over as she finishes. The colored tablets already dissolved. As Adelaide looks into the pots the turmeric and beets are coming out vibrant as usual but the yellow onion skins are taking longer than she thought.
“What do you want to do, beloved?” Misha asks as she stands to the side.
“We’ll boil it longer.” She replies as she takes the other pots off the heat. “Can you strain those?” she gestures to the two pots as she heads to the fridge. She checks on the boiled eggs. Seeing they’re fine she closes the fridge. The table was covered in linen that was already stained, the dyes from the kits were all out. She already made enough dipping tools from wire. All that was left was to deal with the natural dyes.
Misha grabbed some old cups before Adelaide could turn around. “I will fill the cups, beloved. Sit and rest. You have been up all day.” Misha helps Adelaide to a chair. Adelaide knew Misha was right, her legs were burning from running around. But she was so excited about making a happy Easter for her girls. She felt a little guilty about Misha skipping class to help. The vampire read her mind this morning and wouldn’t accept no for an answer. Tracey’s in most of Misha’s classes though, so she will help. Misha pulled Adelaide out of her daze as she put the cups full of pink and orange dye on the table. The girls start to file down after the 20 minutes are up.
Jamie comes in the door as Wendy descends down the stairs. Tracey and Monica not far behind. “Jamie, hurry up and get in here. Mama set up eggs.” Heather calls as she walks into the dining room behind the rest of the girls. Giggles fill the room as everyone sits down.
“You girls know what to do.” Adelaide announces as Misha sets the eggs in the middle of the table. Their eyes catching for a little too long. At this point everyone knew already. They all figured it out after the blond guy fought Misha. “Mama, are we gonna hide the eggs around the house?” Tracey's eyes light up after Dawn asks. The girls all turn to Adelaide.
“You will not. Peaches and I will hide them and tomorrow after school you will search for them.” Adelaide giggles. The girls erupt in cheers and Jamie giggles with Adelaide. Misha admires her girl’s smile from the chair beside the fair woman. After a moment of laughs and giggles they start to dip the eggs in the dye, beginning to gossip about school. Tina and Heather being the leaders of the conversation as Dawn asks questions every so often. After a few minutes pass Adelaide gets up to check on the yellow dye still heating in the pot. Misha watches as she walks over to the stove. The older woman stirs the pot and sees it is vibrant and turns off the heat. Grabbing hot mitts to strain the dye.
Misha turns up behind her and grabs the pot. “Let me, Beloved,”. Misha strains the onion skins and Adelaide ladles some into a cup. Walking to the table the taller woman sets the cup down before sitting. Watching her girls fill the room with laughter as Dani got dots of dye lining her forearm. The girls painting the eggs with the colors Adelaide provided, some doing flowers while others just doing bases. Misha sitting beside Adelaide smiling as she dyed only one. After hours of laughing, gossip, and smiles the girls helped clean up against Adelaide saying they hadn’t needed to. The girls went to bed all giving hugs and wishes of sweet dreams before heading to their bedrooms. “I’m glad they had fun,” Adelaide sighs before getting up. Misha follows her up to their room. The older woman lays on the bed, sinking into the mattress as she relaxes.
Misha cuddles into her, “Today was fun,”.
