Out with the Old

Summary:

After the Pizzaplex had mysteriously burned down, the daycare attendant had miraculously survived the fire and ended up living with you in your small, cozy abode. Their life is domesticated as your new roommates grow closer with you, emotionally and physically. You couldn’t help but wonder if they missed their old job, thinking they had sacrificed everything they were used to after being forced to relinquish that life they were made for.

Work Text:

“Sun, you’re hovering again.” You joked with your toothbrush hanging halfway out your mouth. Your large animatronic roommate stands behind you, swaying back and forth as he hums and waits for you to finish your nightly self-care. You watched him from the reflection of the mirror, his large form taking up most of the space in the small bathroom. For someone who doesn’t have dental hygiene to worry about, he was particularly cautious and adamant that you kept your teeth squeaky clean. His hands lingered over and around your shoulders, wanting to do something to assist you.

“Well, I just- I just want to make sure you don’t miss a single tooth!” He fusses. Unsure what to do with his hands, he tapped his finger nervously on the counter. The mixed sound of silicone and metal on faux granite echoes along the bathroom walls.

“I’ve been brushing my teeth for years, I think I know what I’m doing.” You chuckled and lightly waved him off.

“And yet I’ve still seen adults with cavities and terrible teeth!” Sun remarks, he points at his own mouth. His smile undercuts the serious tone he was trying to portray to convince you that you need his assistance. Of course his teeth were perfect.

“Uh-huh…” You sarcastically agree while rolling your eyes, prepping to rinse and complete your night time routine. You lightly shove Sun with your hip, pretending to need more space to reach the sink. He whines as he backs off. Sun felt a dangerous urge to instruct you that brushing your teeth needs to be another fifty seconds in duration. That is what he taught the children back at the daycare.

It was a Tuesday night. There was nothing special to celebrate prior to bed, but the way Sun was prancing behind you by shifting back and forth on his heels had you wondering if there was something happening tomorrow that you had forgotten about. You quickly reviewed your schedule in your head while you washed your face. Aside from work, there weren't any events, birthdays, or dinners you think you were forgetting.

With two more splashes of water against your face, you reached for your towel and dried off. You looked up to see Sun still inches away from you, now bent down to be closer. His faceplate was directly behind your head. What was this silly daycare attendant doing?

As you reached for your comb, you saw hesitant movement from your periphery. Sun was reaching out to grab your wrist but decided not to. He takes his arm back and begins to wring his hands. He was worried that you would deny him a second time, however, you turned to give him a questioning look. “Is something the matter?” you asked.

“No! No no no, it’s nothing!” Sun fiddles with his ribbon, twirling it in between his fingers. You watch the flickering of his eyes towards your comb.

“Did you want to brush my hair?” You asked, lifting it towards his face. His eyes widened.

“I-I… Can I?” Sun asks excitedly.

“Sure,” you chuckled, handing him the brush and turning back towards the mirror. “I appreciate the help.”

The rays on Sun’s head twirls in a clockwise motion once before gently settling. His fingers wrap around the base of the brush, and he looks at it like you had just handed him a priceless treasure. Sun smiles as he brings the brush to the top of your head, “Anything for you, Sunshine.”

For several minutes, Sun combs your hair, making sure the bristles massaged your scalp with every stroke. Even though there weren’t any knots for him to soothe, Sun continued the monotonous movement over and over, until you twitched and squirmed to indicate you were starting to fall asleep.

He gives you a moment alone to let you change in the bathroom. You could hear the sound of his bells jingle as he stands out in the hall. Not even for more than five minutes could he leave you alone. You made sure to change quickly and efficiently. The one time you nearly slipped on your sweat pants and made a high-pitched scream was the one time Sun broke your bathroom door by bodyslamming it off its hinges. Never again did you haphazardly slip your legs into your pants without adjusting your body weight properly or hold onto the counter for support first. Lesson learned.

When you opened the door, you found Sun exactly where you knew he would be. He was hunched over, fidgeting with his ribbon and his bells just inches away from where the door closed. You chuckled as you asked, “Time for bed?” Sun nods his head frantically but happily. He holds out his hand for you to take, which you did without a second thought.

Sun follows you into the bedroom, dodging the top of his head from hitting the door frame. It made you laugh every time, but you couldn’t help but feel bad that he and Moon were too tall for your home. If you had known they were going to stay here long term with you, you would’ve searched for places with vaulted ceilings. At least then they could stand at full height.

The two of you had a routine every night. Before the lights went out, Sun would grab your water bottle from your desk and your phone charger from your bag, placing them . While he was searching, you would lift your covers and fluff the pillows to get yourself and Sun comfortable. Then the two of you would climb in.

There wasn’t much space on the bed for an eight-foot animatronic so Sun always had to curl, but he loved that it meant he could hold you closer. Your legs were forced to tangle under the covers. The two of you would cuddle in bed for almost an hour, either having a light conversation or basking in each other’s presence until you begin to nod off. And tonight, you had questions you had wondered.

Sun was happily holding you against his chest and humming to himself. His arm wrapped around your waist. You looked down at your phone, reading a news piece about the recent update of Fazbear Entertainment corporation and their newest project of opening an amusement park. There was an article you had read online the other day addressing the potential rumors that Fazbear Entertainment was thinking of building another large attraction to showcase new models of animatronics. Looks like it was coming true. It made you wonder if they were going to reach out to you about Sun and Moon. Were they going to take them back? Would they agree to returning? You frowned.

“Sun, do you ever want to go back to the daycare?”

He leans back from your hair and looks down at you. “How is that possible? The pizzaplex is gone.”

Gone. Burned down to the ground. Wiped off the face of the earth. Not even the steel beams are still standing.

“Well, yes, but I mean, do you ever wish you could go back to the way it was? Spending time playing with children and playing games all day?” You gripped the edge of your covers. There was a suspicious inkling that Sun would be much happier taking care of kids. Instead, he was now stuck helping you with daily chores and making sure you brushed your teeth every night.

“Well, of course, Sunshine! I miss those children dearly. But that doesn’t mean the daycare will suddenly reappear just because I want it to.” Sun states in a very straightforward manner. His tone didn’t change, making it hard for you to tell if he was trying to make a joke. You sucked in a breath. “Why do you ask?”

“I was just wondering.” Your voice tones down to a whisper.

Sun lifts his head and looks down at you, scrolling aimlessly through social media, but your eyes aren't reading anything. His rays click twice as they retract.

“Sunshine, I’m very glad you took us in when the company reached out.” Sun reassured. “If it wasn’t for you, we’d probably be decommissioned or forcibly shut down for years, sitting and rusting away in some warehouse out in the countryside.”

“I doubt they would do that to you, Sun.” You retorted. You truly believed that a multimillion dollar asset would not be put away in a dinky storage space, but doubt was nipping at you that they could possibly prove you wrong considering how much money they had.

Sun giggles, “No need to sugarcoat it, Sunshine. We are well aware of all the messages and announcements that Fazbear puts out on the network communication hub. There is more than enough information that we have access to on the internet as well.”

You remained silent for a moment. While you were wondering if they missed their days at the plex, there was a part of you that didn’t want them to leave you either. Your daily routine wouldn’t feel the same without them anymore. “I’m just worried that maybe you weren’t feeling like you were getting the fulfillment of staying with me. I’m not the same as thirty to forty children. I don’t need as much care as them.”

“Well I beg to differ! I think you sometimes need just as much care!”

“Hey!” You tried to turn around, but Sun tightens his hold on your waist and pulls you closer against his chest.

“It was a joke,” Sun laughs lightheartedly. You settled into his arm, audibly huffing for Sun to relish. You knew that. But you couldn’t feel like there was a hint of truth in there that Sun was playing at.

The two of you didn’t discuss more after, but you could feel your eyes drooping despite all the lights on in your room. Sun could feel your breathing start to slow, so he rises out of bed and walks towards the light. “Time for lights off, Sunshine.”

“Mhm…” You hummed. The room goes dark as the sounds of metal shuffling and their faceplate turning were muffled by your ears against the pillow. Moon hadn’t even finished shifting before their legs started to walk towards your side of the bed.

“...Which means no more phone time for you.” Moon grumbles before plucking your phone right out of your loosely-gripped fingers. You didn’t put up much of a fight physically.

“Ughh,” you groaned dramatically. You did feel tired, but you still wanted to bask in the blue light of your phone. There was more internet to explore!

You watched with half-lidded eyes as Moon plugs in your phone and places it delicately on your bedside table before climbing back into bed next to you. He does it so gracefully that the weight of his body barely moves the mattress. You turn to look at him. He gathers you in his arms and pulls you in. His ruby eyes stare directly at you. One of his fingers comes to press in the space between your brows, massaging it gently. “Time for sleep.”

“Not yet,” you refute.

“Naughty naughty.” He chuckles. “What’s on your mind, Starlight?”

“I wanted to ask you the same question.” You traced a circle around the button on his chest.

“Hm?”

“Did you wish you could go back to the pizzaplex, back to the way it was?”

Moon’s faceplate spins once. He heard you ask Sun the question earlier but didn’t think you would want his input as well. Sun’s answer was pretty straightforward. He didn’t put too much thought into it initially, but now he contemplates before replying, “Not really.”

“Really?” You look up at him. He leans down and presses his forehead against yours.

“We moved on. What’s happened has happened. Nothing we can do to beg Fazbear to take us back and change the way they’re deciding what to do with their plans for the corporation. They’re moving on to bigger and better things. We’re most likely no longer needed.” He briefly pauses, watching your expression turn sour. “Don't worry about it too much. Don't forget, we were designed to be caretakers, and if it means that we transition from watching over children to watching over a troublesome you, then that’s what happens.”

A small smile forms on your lips. “What’s with you and Sun implying that I’m difficult?” You mumbled.

Moon’s voice box cackles. “You wanted us to speak the truth, didn't you? We don’t like to lie either.”

“Ugh, I guess so. I might be just a little bit difficult.”

“Only just a little.”

Moon wraps his arm around waist and pulls you up towards him, giving your head more space on your pillows. He props himself onto his elbow and begins to emit a low hum, a small tune that you’ve come to recognize was his own composition of white noise for you to fall asleep to. Using his free hand, he massages the back of your head gently with his claws. It felt similarly to the bristles of the comb Sun used earlier to brush your hair. You close your eyes and throw your arm around Moon’s chest.

Before falling asleep, you whispered.

“I’m glad you guys are here to take care of me too. I'll make sure to be a little more difficult than usual tomorrow...”
