   Summary

   Ardeth believes the uncertainty of not knowing Rick’s fate is the worst pain he will ever experience, but a new, fresh agony awaits.

   It arrives the day he sees Rick’s face again, alive and healthy, grinning back at him. When their eyes meet, he can hear Rick’s sly rebuttal to Ardeth’s awe.

   You thought they could kill me that easy?

   Ardeth wants to fall to his knees, to thank God for his good fortune, but, when he sees the woman who accompanies Rick, she pierces his heart. It only takes one glance to see that she and Rick belong together.

   Ardeth thinks his affair with Rick is over when Evy arrives, but Rick keeps seeking him out, and, strangely, so does Evy.
