Work Text:
For a long time, I was blinded by hate, and distraught by honor I didn’t need.
I saw you as my enemy, when I didn't have to.
You saw me just the same, and I didn't blame you.
Time to time, I reminiscence us, trapped in the catacombs.
I’ve never let anyone touch my face before… touch what I’m most ashamed of.
This scar is forever a reminder of lost innocence.
I never was the same since.
It shaped who I became, but meeting you changed everything.
I closed my eyes in response to your hand placed so gently on my scarred cheek.
The world stopped for a moment.
When you took your hand away, I felt something missing ever since...
I longed for that comforting feeling again.
When I joined the group, your resentment towards me hurt the most.
Seeing your warmth with the others, but any time I was near you,
You grew cold.
I knew what I did to you, and I didn’t deserve your forgiveness.
I could’ve helped you back then, but I was selfish.
I lost your trust the second I got it,
And that's what I regret the most.
Eventually you forgave me, and the way we embraced each other afterwards meant so much to me.
Even to this day.
When you’re around, I don’t know how to act.
I feel different when you’re next to me.
The butterflies stir within me, and they never leave.
My heart races when you look into my eyes.
The light reflects in your blue eyes I could get lost in.
There were times I wanted to hold your hand, catching myself thinking:
If I just inched my hand closer to yours when we walk side by side…
But I never do.
Because that first evening we all felt a calmness we once believed to be so out of reach,
Was when I caught a glimpse of you and Aang sharing a moment outside during sunset.
I felt intense jealousy surge through me,
Because that should’ve been me.
I was going to tell you how I felt that day... but I was too late.
In another life,
I’d be the one kissing you on the balcony,
After we finally restored peace and balance in the world,
Where everything was supposed to fall in place for us.
I couldn’t get you out of my head after you healed me, no matter how hard I tried.
I risked my life for yours, because I couldn’t bare to live in a world without you.
I acted before I even could think, running against time.
I jumped in front of you and believed that the glow of lightning would be the last thing I ever saw.
But then I woke up to you looking at me, with tears in your eyes.
I saved your life, and you saved mine.
You met me at my worst, and eventually you saw past that.
You can’t forget someone like that... someone like you.
You make it hard to forget other people exist in this world.
You’re a woman to reckon with, all on your own.
A master of your element, truly unmatchable.
The best I’ve ever seen.
It was most evident that day we confronted the man responsible for your mother's death.
And just as clear all the times we fought against each other in the past.
All those times people teased or mistaken us for dating,
Deep inside, part of me wished it was true.
But of course, I denied it every time.
Now all of me wishes it was true.
Mai might have been my childhood crush,
But you are my first love.
You remain an unrequited love,
I never got to admit out loud.
