He’s tall, taller even than Balthazar, who is by no means a small man. His shoulders are broad enough to strain the faded red fabric of his shirt. He’s foregone a coat despite his rank, working in only a tunic with the collar open to reveal a triangle of dark skin and darker hair, and the hint of swirling tattoos. His breeches are tucked into worn boots, and a sash at his waist holds a cutlass and pistol. His hair is black as raven feathers, worn long enough to brush his shoulders, falling loose around a face that looks carved from some artist’s fantasy.
But it’s his eyes that arrest her most. Even from a distance, she can see they’re unusual; a warm hazel that seems to shift between gold and green in the tropical light, framed by thick lashes and currently focused on the horizon with an intensity that makes the muscles low in her stomach clench.
