Chapter Text
“It’s here.” Rose said, starting to slow her pace as they approached the shop. She shoved her phone into her pocket, but took it out again to double check. Ilya snickered, Rose rolling her eyes as she put her phone back in her pocket, squeezing it slightly to stop herself from triple checking. “Stop laughing, you’re stressing me out.”
“It is funny.” Ilya shrugged, Rose shooting him a look. “I am lightening the mood.”
“You were supposed to be moral support.”
“Shane would be moral support.” Ilya clarified. “I am here for Svetlana knowledge.”
That was true, but whatever. Ilya opened the door to the shop, Rose mumbling a thank you as they entered, adjusting her cap slightly.
She had called ahead to let them know she’d be coming and that she needed the visit to stay a secret, but it always made her nervous. Since her latest film had blown up, she’d been getting a lot more bizarre fans trying to snap her picture, and this day in particular needed to stay a secret.
Hell, she had even dragged Ilya along with her so she could lie and say he was getting something for Shane if any pictures came out. Well, that wasn’t the real reason, but it was a nice plus.
She went over to the counter of the shop, folding her sunglasses and hanging them off the collar of her shirt. “Hey, I called ahead-“ This felt more nerve-wracking than any film Rose had ever acted in. “I’d uh- like to look at your engagement bands?” She asked, squeezing her hand in a fist before relaxing it.
“Yes, we’ve already prepared them. Thank you for choosing us, Ms. Landry.” The jeweler said, disappearing underneath the counter momentarily before standing up with a box of rings. Unfortunately, they were all a little more masculine than Rose hoped, most not even having a stone. She stared at them, scanning it anyway. Would Svetlana like a plain ring? Her jewelry was usually just gold, but Rose wanted her to have a stunning ring on her finger. “Uh-“
“These are too… dull.” Ilya hummed, leaning against the counter. “Where are the pretty ones?”
“What do you mean?”
“Feminine rings.” Ilya clarified. Rose relaxed slightly.
“Oh, I thought…” the jeweler trailed off, clearing her throat. She looked at Ilya and back at the rings. “Yes, of course. Please give me some time to curate a selection for you-“
“Gold.” Ilya added.
“Yes, gold-“ the jeweler looked a bit flustered as she put the box away, taking out another one that was empty.
“Would you like us to step out and return later?” Rose asked, feeling a bit awkward just standing there and watching. She also felt a bit sick. This was already going wrong. She was certain when she called she said engagement rings with a variety of stones for her partner, yet most of the ones selected were stoneless or just ugly. Fuck.
“If you’d like to, you can return in maybe… 20 minutes?”
“Of course.” Rose nodded, moving towards the door. She grabbed Ilya’s arm when he didn’t follow right away, pulling him out of the shop.
When the door shut behind them, she pulled him along to the corner. Ilya laughed as soon as she turned to face him, despite literally nothing happening. “What now?”
“She thinks we are together.”
“Everyone knows you’re with Shane.” She said, huffing. “I always get sent articles about you two-“
“You get sent articles because people know about your fling with him.”
“It wasn’t a fling.” She smirked at him, Ilya’s expression shifting to a more frustrated one.
“Yes, it was.” He stated, clearly annoyed. “Many people who do not care about hockey don’t know.”
“My fans usually aren’t involved with hockey.”
“You have normal people fans and you have weirdo fans.” Ilya shrugged. “That lady is probably normal. She does not know. I can clarify-“
“No, it’s fine.” Ilya blew a raspberry in annoyance, pouting afterwards.
“Let’s just kill time. Coffee?” Ilya shrugged in agreement. “Alright. Let’s find a place-“
When they headed back to the shop, Rose took a deep breath outside of the door, just as she would for an audition she was particularly excited and equally terrified about.
This would’ve worked to calm her nerves, if Ilya didn’t look like he was holding back a laugh. “Cut it out.” She mumbled, opening the door. She hoped it would close in his face, but he just stepped in without any added drama. Whatever.
“Ah, welcome back! I hope these are more to your liking?” The jeweler asked, bringing out a box of rings again. This time, it was all gold rings, each with different stones attached. Really, she wanted diamond, but she wasn’t opposed to the idea of something else. Anything would suit Svetlana. Plus, she could probably ask for a different stone to be set if all else failed.
She scanned the box, feeling nervous as Ilya looked over her shoulder as well. She reached for one, turning to Ilya when he tsked.“Can you go somewhere else?”
“I thought I was here for my opinions.” Ilya shrugged. “That one, no.” He said, pointing to a turquoise one Rose hadn’t even considered. It just wasn’t something either she or Svetlana would like. “Helping.”
“You’re too close to me.” Rose frowned. “Look around.”
Ilya groaned loudly and dramatically, stalking off to the other side of the shop. She rolled her eyes again, briefly wondering how Shane hadn’t gone insane. She looked back down at the box, scanning the rings again. To be fair, the first one she had reached for really was more of her taste rather than Svetlana’s. Svetlana was classy, the type of beauty you’d see in an old movie and fall head over heels for. Some of these were a bit too modern. Well. Svetlana was modern. But… not a weird cut stone and ring modern. More like a fast cars modern and house modern. Maybe something minimalistic?
She reached for a ring that had a thin, but pretty band, a large oval shaped stone adorning it. It did look like a diamond, but Rose wasn’t really an expert on stones and things like that. She inspected it in her hands, trying to imagine what reaction it’d garner from Svetlana. The oval cut stone was nice, and it looked striking in the lights of the shop. Compared to the rest of the rings… well… it wasn’t as flashy as some of them, but the classic look really did seem like it’d fit Svetlana. It was something that she could wear every day, and Rose wanted her to be able to proudly show it off with every one of her outfits, even when her outfits were just Rose’s t-shirt.
“Ah, that one’s up there?” The jeweler asked, Rose glancing up to see a fond smile on her face. Rose smiled back, relaxing slightly. It was true. This, out of all the rings in the box, felt right. Maybe it was stupid to pick one right away, without glancing at the others, but it really was the best fit. “That model also works well with ring enhancers.” She pitched, Rose nodding. She was sure Svetlana would like the ring as it was, but a flashier enhancer might be nice for more formal events? “We have a few specifically for it. Would you like to see them?”
“Sure.” Rose said, feeling a bit awkward. The woman grabbed a box from under the counter, setting it on the table. She pointed at a row of them. “These all fit with the ring.” She picked up one that was studded with diamonds, handing it to Rose. “Here, try them on. I’m sure he’ll bu-”
“Do you have dog collars?” Ilya interrupted from across the store. Rose almost choked.
“Wh-what?” The jeweler asked, looking away from Rose and heading towards him. Thank you Ilya Rozanov for the distraction. She looked down at the enhancers, pairing them with the ring. “My Anya needs a new collar.”
All of them made the ring feel a bit too bulky, but two plain gold ones with a few extra stones seemed pretty with it. They just made the band look a bit thicker, without drawing attention away from the stone.
She could see Svetlana wearing them more frequently. Maybe not every day, but it’d be a nice option, right?
“I don’t believe we carry dog collars, sir.”
“Dog necklace?” Although Rose was tuning him out, the sincerity with which he suggested it really did make her laugh. She covered her mouth to better stifle it, staring fondly at the ring. Did she even need to look at other ones? This one was just right. Hell, it was right even without the enhancers.
“We don’t carry necklaces for dogs.”
“Here, look at this photo. Very cute, yes? She will look nice with a necklace.”
It was only right to look at a few more rings, right? Just in case?
Rose glanced back at the ring box, scanning it again. Besides the one in her hand, none really felt like they’d be perfect for Svetlana. There were ones she liked, sure, but she liked them in the sense that they’d be pretty for a gala or premiere. The one she was holding was pretty for life, for day to day things. For cuddling on the couch and watching hockey games.
“Roz, can you come look at this one?”
“I am busy.” He said bluntly, Rose glancing over to see he was actively looking at necklaces now. Even though it was funny, it was still annoying. “This one comes in white gold? Dogs are allergic to silver.”
“That’s werewolves.” Rose groaned, looking at the enhancers again. She still wasn’t sure about them, and each time she tested them with the ring she liked them even less.
“Yes, also show me that one. With the emerald.” Ilya hummed, ignoring her completely. She was definitely filing a complaint with Shane. She rolled her eyes, leaning against the counter as she glanced around the shop. There were a few things Svetlana might like outside of an engagement ring, so it was worth at least scanning the counter for other items before checking out, especially while the jeweler was busy with Ilya’s shenanigans.
She moved to the earrings, looking if there was anything that felt particularly like something Svetlana would like. She often wore chunky earrings, but really anything would suit her. Maybe she could find earrings that matched with the ring? Would that be too much? Ilya wasn’t helping at all. “Roz.” She said firmer now, returning to the rings. “Come over here and look.”
“Ughhhhh.” Ilya groaned, trudging over to her. “Yes, what?”
“This one?” She said, showing him the one she had selected. A flash of genuine surprise seemed to cross his face, though it quickly faded. Maybe Rose was just freaking out.
“Ah, you picked one already?”
“Yes. I think it’d be good, right?” Ilya gently took the ring, inspecting it. Then, he let out a laugh, Rose taking it back. “Asshole-”
“No, no- I am- It is very nice!” He said, biting his lip as he tried (and failed) to hold back a smile. “You want this one now? You don’t want to think about it?”
“I can’t believe you!” She huffed. “You’re supposed to be helping!”
“I am helping.” Ilya shrugged. “Why are you buying a ring after only one store? Maybe look at more stores. Think about it for more days.”
“I don’t want to hear it. You’re standing there buying necklaces for your dog!”
“I am buying one necklace for my Anya and one for my Shane.” Ilya corrected. Rose felt like her head was going to explode.
“I-” She took a deep breath. “You’re lucky Sveta loves you.” Rose muttered, ignoring how it made Ilya burst into laughter again. “I’m getting the ring.”
Rose realized after getting home that she should’ve 100% not gotten the ring yet. She should have like… reserved it, or something because she was positive there were no good hiding places that Svetlana wouldn’t find while Rose was at work.
They shared their jewelry, their makeup was all in the same drawer, their clothes in the same closet.
Hell, Svetlana would even occasionally borrow Rose’s shoes.
She groaned as she looked through their shared purses. Svetlana always cleaned them out so they’d easily be able to match their purse to their outfits. All the contents were always placed in a specific bin so they’d easily transfer it when rushing out the door. Fuck.
She was going to have to carry it around, wasn’t she?
Rose glanced at the time on her phone. Svetlana would be out of work in an hour, and their date was in two. She had to get ready soon: it’d make it easier to explain why her coat and purse were off limits for the day. Plus, that gave her a bit more time to figure out what the fuck she was going to do when they got back from the date.
She threw herself onto their bed, ring box still clutched in her hand. Maybe it’d be best to just propose today, but Svetlana had planned the date. It’d be kind of stealing her girlfriend’s thunder, and who was Rose to take away from Svetlana’s plans?
Rose glanced at the box, staring at the black velvet fabric, running her thumb over it. Maybe she’d just need to propose within the next few days. She wanted to be married to Svetlana already, so she’d just do it. She’d plan the perfect date, and then on the way home, she’d stop somewhere meaningful or scenic and propose.
How hard could it be to plan the most perfect date of all time and a perfect proposal in like… the week before she started filming her next project?
Rose felt a bit nauseous. Ilya was right when he suggested she wait. Fuck. She hated being wrong, especially about things regarding her (hopefully) future wife.
Her phone dinged with a message, Rose fishing it out of her pocket to look at the screen.
Sveta 🥰❤️👩🏼❤️💋👩🏽💖💋
Work is going to run over :c
Can we meet at the restaurant instead?
Sorry моя любовь
Rose mentally cheered. Maybe she’d actually be able to figure out the whole ring box scenario?

Huh. Weird. She didn’t recall Svetlana packing anything extra to work, but maybe she had just been too distracted by how hot her girlfriend was when she was in business attire. Or any attire. Or no attire.
