Chapter Text
They had bound their souls together as one. They had promised to share their lives together. But fate was a cruel thing that not even they could overcome. At least not in this lifetime.
The sword he had forced her to summon and plunge through his heart was proof of that. The scream that ripped from her throat as she realized what he had made her do at the small moment of clarity from his madness of them being separated for so long. So he wouldn’t hurt his beloved. His treasure. The only one that had never seen him as a monster but him. The one that had given him his name, while others cursed and screamed in fear at him. No, he would rather die than hurt his one true love. His beloved enemy. His sorceress.
As she realized what she had done she tried to pull the great claymore from his chest. However, she wasn’t able to do so immediately. He scooped her up in his talons carrying her far away from the trail the Court of Justia held for her execution. When they had finally landed, it was in the former valley of dragons his soul had shared with her in their dream. The flowers that had been in full bloom in the dream were wilted and dying.
After she had safely gotten free from his claws she quickly ran over to pull out the sword and he returned to his more humanoid form. His blood ran like rainfall, escaping the jewel in his chest where his heart was. Her hands immediately went to cover the wound, tragically desperate to save him.
Even in his deteriorating state, Sylus raised his hand, gently laying his hand across her own. A weak smile traced his lips as blood dripped from his mouth. “I-It doesn’t matter what-” His coughs interrupted the words he wished to convey to her. “Whatever happens to me.” He removes her hands and one his claws moves to touch her cheek. The feeling was deathly cold compared to his usual rejuvenating warmth she always felt. “As long as you’re safe that's all that matters. Live for me, beloved.”
Tears started to fall from her beautiful jewel-like eyes, so normally full of life's desires. Now, they were filled with nothing but sorrow and rage. Even more so as he started to disappear before her very eyes into flower petals. The petals were as black as onyx. Fitting to match the sorrow of truly being unable to escape the dragon’s curse.
Fury filled her voice as shouts “NO! YOU CAN’T DIE!” She hadn’t had the chance to tell him something life changing. What would have made him stay by her side and fight to protect the paradise they created with one another.
As she felt the part of his soul fading within her, her anger took over as she spoke in a shaky whisper but ending up with strong conviction. For she remembered him telling her the best way to punish someone was to make them live forever. But it wasn’t just a punishment in this case. But a reassurance he would find what was most important.
“Sylus, I curse you. I curse your soul. I curse your soul to never fade away. To wander aimlessly until you find me. Your soul shall always be tied to me, forever.” She grasped onto black petals the last pieces of his fading soul as if denying his departure with every part of her being.
“This is my curse. Only I can grant you true death.” As the final word left her lips was the moment the last of the petals drifted into the wind, like a dragon returning to the clouds.
As she watched them a faint dragon’s roar echoed within her soul. She fell to the ground as she felt an excruciating pain from the top of her head. She saw blood dripping from her brow and slowly touched her head and found horns had sprouted from it. She also felt a tail swishing from her body behind her.
Her dragon was gone. But she was now a dragon. She was alone, mourning in her frustration. But she wouldn’t be for long.
As her blood and tears fell for her sorrow her hands fell to her stomach. Resting protectively there.
“My dragon is gone. But we will find him. He will find us in another life. No matter how long it takes.” She promised not only to herself but to their child.
Thinking of their child she found the strength to get up and survive. She knew she couldn’t stay there and wallow in grief.
Yes, Sylus had destroyed all those that had wanted to hurt them but she knew human hearts. So full of fear, greed, hatred for anything unknown. She knew she had to prepare for any survivors that would come after her and in her current state. And she knew she didn’t have the strength to fight after all that she had recently been through.
No, she had no strength after being held prisoner so long. Being weakened from the beatings, torture they had done to her along with the lack of nutrient.
On top of losing the one that completed her and becoming a fiend herself. No, her body did not have the stamina for a fight. She needed to rest and care not only for herself but her little one. It was a miracle she hadn’t lost them.
She herself had only recently realized the truth. Being in a constant dream-like state and unable to tell what was reality or the sweet dreams their souls had made while searching for one another for 3 months. It was only after she had bit the last guard's neck on the way to the trail, nearly consuming him since her body had been starving. The feel of substance within her body had jolted her sense awake and back to reality. Coming to the realization her courses had stopped. Her last one happened just before her and Sylus joined their souls to become one. She knew deep in her bones their love had created something special. A miracle.
Only Sylus wouldn’t be here to experience and bask in the joy with her. At least not yet. He would find them. She knew deep in her soul he would.
10 months later.
The sorceresses hadn’t realized dragon pregnancies lasted longer than human ones. She also didn’t realize how hard it would be moving and forging for food in her human form. Or how exhausted she would be in switching between her forms this late in pregnancy. She had opted to stay in her dragon form for the sake of convenience.
She thankfully hadn’t ran into any human survivors here in the valley. So, she wasn’t as concerned about threats from them and wild beasts had mostly steered clear as long as she was a dragon. Over these long months she had done her best not only to care for herself but the child in her womb.
She would sing the song their father had loved along with others. She would tell them stories of things she had done with their father and other pleasant tales of her childhood. She could tell her child truly enjoyed hearing her voice. And always seemed the most excited about the tells of a mischievious princess from how strong and excitedly they moved at that.
Often when the child was restless and not letting her sleep she would once again curse their father. “Sylus, when I see you again I am giving you a thrashing you will never forget.” Drops of love and longing still found in her strong tone.
She swore at times in her sleep deprived mind she heard his answering laugh at those words.
On a night that child was letting her actually rest for once, she suddenly awakened roaring in pain. As the pain wouldn't subside she hadn’t realized her body altered to her humanoid form.
After a few minutes of being in severe agony under a blood moon sky she realized there was wetness between her legs. She then remembered once when she had been charged to help a midwife when was still a puppet of the Court of Justitia. Only then did she realize what was happening.
She knew she was in for an excruciating long night. She once again cursed the male who was unable to be there with her.
The only response was the wind blowing black petals towards her. Seemingly trying to comfort her.
18 hours later the sorceress laid exhausted besides not one but two lovingly swaddled dragonlings.
She couldn’t believe it.
She had never expected there to be two of them.
She lovingly gazed at her sleeping sons. The twins were a perfect mixture of both her and their father. She holds them close “Luke and Kieran. Those are your names.” She says softly and then turns her head to the sky. “I have named our sons Luke and Kieran, Sylus. Come find us in the next life”
The flowers around them swayed in the wind seeming to answer hers.
She gives a tired and weak smile as she holds Luke’s fingers “If you find your father before I do, be sure to give him a bit of a headache with that mischief I'm sure the two of you will cause. I have a feeling you two will be my little trouble makers. Just like I was for him.” She swore she felt him squeeze her finger back in answer. However, she figured that was the exhaustion playing tricks on her. That was the only thought on her brain as she fell into a weary slumber.
