Work Text:
Maddie watched her brother move baking pans in and out of the oven with a practiced ease while Eddie sat on a stool at the end of the counter. He wasn't in Buck's way, but he was still in the kitchen so they could talk.
She had initially come over just to pick something she had left a few nights before, but something stopped her from interrupting. Eddie had his elbow resting on the counter with his hand propping up his chin. That's not what stopped her, though. What stopped Maddie in her tracks were Eddie's eyes, and the way they stared at Buck as he moved about with pure adoration. Maddie knew that look well. It was the way Chimney always looked at her when they were alone.
Still unaware of Maddie's presence, Buck said "hey I was thinking."
"About what?" Eddie replied, his gaze still trailing Buck.
"Does Christopher have to take all of these to school for the bake sale?" Buck asked. The way he spoke was a whine, but there was a teasing way about it. Eddie laughed like he knew exactly where Buck's thoughts were headed.
"You know how those mom's get Buck. In fact, why don't you stay and help when you drop these off." Eddie tried to sound casual. Maddie wanted to snicker at Eddie trying to play it cool. Buck's lips twisted into the kind of smile Maddie hadn't ever seen on his face until she moved to California, and it made her chest feel warm and fuzzy. She was so happy that things had turned out okay for the both of them.
"And get mobbed with you?" Buck laughed. "Can't think of spending it any other way."
Maddie took that as her opportunity to leave before she got discovered. On her way out, she saw what she had come over for, a sweater, draped over the back of the couch. She grabbed it and closed the door as quietly as she could before speed walking back to her car.
