Chapter 1: I Ruined It

Chapter Text

I huddled against the dusty wall of the shack, pistol by my right hand, dagger by my left. A rare spate of rain had decided to grace the dry, dusty grassland with its presence, water pounding the tin roof i had hastily patched. Great. All my water wouldnt taste like dirt and sand anymore.

A train would be passing by about a fifteen minutes walk from here. One of those electric models that seemed to be all the rage now, although quite unheard of three years ago.

three years ago. The memory of a grinning, green haired boy. His normally cheerful face twisted in an expression of sadness, anger, and hate. Sadness, anger and hate directed to her.

No. She shut down that memory as fast as it apperared. Not him. Anyone but him.

she sighed. Time to start making her way to the tracks. She picked up a small, metal flask in the corner and swirled the contents around. Shit. Almost empty. Hopefully she would find something good on one of the boxcars today. She knocked back the liquid inside. The firey burn of the harsh alcohol stund her throat.

Taco grimaced. Goddam dirt. Got in everything. She swallowed the grainy particles of sand coating her tounge, washing them down with a swig of water from one of the buckets she had positioned under a hole in the roof. The steady dripping of water splashing into the bucket was her only measure of time.

She sighed, fixed her bowtie, and buttoned up her duster, flipping the collar up. She stepped out into the rain

the rain poured down on the train station roof. He stood there, openmouthed, as she croched, frozen. Hands and pockets filled with stolen gold.

Taco broke into a run, boots thumping accross the steaming ground.

"why?"

"redistribution. Trust me, whoever owns this wont even notice its gone, but the families i give it too will."

"you... you speak fluent english?"

"of course, you moron. i was faking all along. You were never my real partner. Just a tool." His voice took on a sudden egde of fury.

"leave. Now. Before i call the lawkeepers."

the train tracks were coming up ahead. Taco could faintly feel them vibrating as a train neared. Perfect. She crouched off to the side as the massive engine neared.

The train she was supposed to take to the prision loomed in front of her. Without a single goodbye or farewell, she was shoved in a holding car, and the train peeled out of the only home she had known.

boxcars began to pass by, and Taco ran alongside the train, grasping a handle and hauling herself into a car via the open door.

a ghost town appeared in her vision. This was it. She was finally far enough from Inanimate Point to leave it behind. She slipped on a pair of smuggled brass knuckles, and shattered a window with a crash.

Taco began to scan the contents of the car. Food. Booze. And gold. The jackpot. It was rare that all three were in the same car. She loaded as many goods as she could carry onto a spare crate and prepared to jump off.

The glass cut her fingers as Taco perched on the windowsill and prepared to jump off. She hit the ground with a thud, ankles aching from the impact.

She took a flying leap off the edge of the boxcar platform, crate in hand, rolling to absorb the impact. Some of the bottles rattled a bit, but none broke.

good ridance. They were all corrupt assholes anyways. Taco could survive out here. She could thrive. They would see. And they would pay.

Taco secured the goods and began her trip home.

Notes:

So... this was interesting to write. I think this style, with the flashbacks, is what ill default to for the rest of the fic.

If anything seems confusing, just know i plan to clear things up soon.
