What if Mirabel's gift was the gift of illusions

Chapter 1: Don't Believe Me

Chapter Text

She had dreamed about getting a gift, and being helpful.

Ever since she was old enough to understand what made her familia different and what made her familia special, she dreamed of being a part of it.

And it was her turn.

She grabbed the doorknob.

And her door glowed, showing her.

Almost like Camilo's door, where it would show him and the likeness of two other people.

Except Mirabel's door had a likeness of herself waving a hand in front of her face and another likeness slightly different than her on each side.

It confused so many people about what she was gifted with.

But that wasn't really the point.

All it was was celebrating.

So they ran into her room that was constantly shifting, and changing, and full of mirages.

Illusions.

Mirabel's gift was casting Illusions.

Bruno was happy for his sobrina.

(Not in the least because he couldn't think of a way his mother could squeeze out any possible enjoyment of her gift.)

But he heard his Mama talking to Julieta and Agustin.

"You have to be vigilant."

"Vigilant?" Julieta repeated.

"Your daughter's gift is the gift of illusions. You have to be vigilant about what she says."

"...how is her illusion gift any different than Camilo's shapeshifting gift?" Agustin spoke up, saying what Bruno had been thinking.

"Shapeshifting is useful. Shapeshifting is one thing. Mirabel can change what you see, hear, smell, everything...that is why you need to be vigilant. She is going to be good at lying and we have to make sure she never becomes a liar."

Bruno frowned.

But then he caught sight of Mirabel, having decided to come out of her room for whatever reason.

He could tell by her expression...

she heard Mama.

Mirabel watched the room change.

Watched the wall that looked one way depending on where you put your head and looked another way depending on where you put your head.

"Is no one going to believe me?"

She whispered.

But then she had an idea.

If no one was going to believe her...

If everyone was going to think that she was a liar...

She was going to embrace that.

And she was going to start that as soon as possible.
