Chapter Text
Rogue walked into the room, finding her husband standing by the window, wrapped up in a heavy blanket, staring outside. With how things were going lately, she was relatively sure that underneath he was naked.
"Remy!" Anna Marie rebuked, putting the tray with his chicken broth and Tante's medicine by the bed. "You get your butt right back in bed!"
He blinked at her, slowly turning his head as Anna Marie came up to him, almost stomping and grabbed him by the blanket-covered shoulders, dragging him with her.
With fever as high as his was, that boy was literally beside himself, and still couldn't keep his ass parked. Good thing, he didn't resist much as she dropped him into the bed, still in the blanket burrito he was. She sat beside him, Remy blinking up at her with his dark eyes being unusually wide and curious. He looked almost like an innocent child like this. Boy, was he cute.
If only he wouldn't be also on the verge of burning up to death from inside because of his fever he caught in the most stupid way possible.
As he started to cough and first felt even hotter to touch than he usually was, that idiot just smiled and said "Better me than dem girls". All that because he used his coat to cover Chelsea and Jitter from the rain when he was picking them up from the city. Naturally, that somehow ended up being his undoing, and girls were feeling mighty guilty.
"Chels helped make you somethin' to eat," Rogue informed her nearly delirious husband as he blinked at her again, tilting his head like a curious cat. He hummed, looking down at her hands where Rogue held a bowl with his soup. "Come on now, Remy, you a big boy, eat it yourself."
For a moment he looked like would pout, but surely enough, after some maneuvering, his hands and arms appeared from within the blanket burrito, and she helped him sit up. Just as she predicted, her man was completely naked underneath, and was instantly shaking the moment he got out of the blanket.
"Don't drink it in one go," Rogue told him, knowing full well how bad Gambit's relationship with the cold was. It was always making him tense and jittery and it brought up bad memories. But burning his tongue wasn't a good thing either.
So she pulled the blanket back up to cover his shoulders and back as Remy sipped from the bowl, foregoing the spoon entirely. She predicted it, and was not exactly opposed. As long as he was putting something in his stomach, Anna could forgive some barbaric manners.
Soon enough, he was done and Rogue shoved a vial of medicine Tante Mattie gave her for her fool of a husband. It was supposed to be the same thing that got him to his feet every time he was down when he was a boy, and Tante was fairly certain it'd work again. The bad thing was it tasted like shit and Remy seemed to remember it even before he got a drop of it into his mouth.
"Non..." Gambit groaned, trying to push the vial away, but Anna wasn't having it, keeping the medicine in his hand.
"Don't be a baby now, sugah, you gotta drink it. You gonna get better," Rogue told him, firm, even if compassionate. She was willing to see him wince from the taste way more than to see him sweating up and burning up and blabbering mess, his face etched with pain, as he was last night when the fever first hit. She really thought he might die. She didn't want to see it again.
After some more convincing, Gambit did take his medicine and was wrapped tight in his blanket burrito again.
Rogue cleaned everything up and sat by his side, rubbing his chest through the blanket soothingly. She hoped he could feel it, and inability to touch him stung like a needle in her heart for a moment, but she had to remind herself that it was okay. He just needed to be warm. So to soothe herself too, Anna moved her hand to caress his cheek instead.
His skin was clammy and hot under her hand, but he was alive and breathing, so Rogue took it as a consolation prize.
After a little while, just as Rogue thought he had fallen asleep, Remy spoke. His voice was quiet and husky, his throat still hurting even if not being the main problem right now.
"Anna..."
"Yeah?" she murmured, stroking the side of his face with her thumb, wordlessly wishing he could borrow Logan’s powers like she could, heal up in no time. But he couldn't, and his suffering was breaking her heart.
"You'd... Still love me if I was a Horseman?" he asked, quiet and slurred, and Rogue's brows shot up to her brows, surprised snort escaping her. Yeah, he definitely was delirious.
"You was. I did. Get some sleep now," Rogue told him with a smile, shaking her head slightly. Remy scowled, blinking up at her, and shook his head curtly.
"Non, chère, like a real horseman... With a horse..."
Rogue couldn't hold another laughter in, her shoulders shaking slightly.
"Well, Ah guess you and Becca would match," she mused, and Remy hummed. "You almost her daddy anyway, we'd know where she got it from."
Remy's lips turned into a faintest of smiles as he settled deeper into the blankets.
"I'd have a horse... Name'em Blackjack..."
Rogue snorted again, raising her eyes to the skies, trying not to cackle right there.
"That's so you of you, babe."
"I'd look stupid on a horse."
"Probably."
Remy's head tilted as his eyes looked up at her, suddenly a little glassy and almost fearful.
"You'd not love me?"
Rogue felt a pang of pain and warmth of love blooming through her all at once. She caught his face into her hands and leaned in, pressing a kiss to his forehead. His lips were a no-go zone, even if she could heal up in no time.
"Ah'd love you even if you was a horse, Remy," she whispered, and he smiled at her, one of his soft, tender smiles that always make her stomach feel like it's full of butterflies, even after all those years. She smiled back. "Rest now."
Remy nodded and relaxed slowly, snuggling deeper into the warmth as he drifted off to sleep.
Anna sat by his side for a little longer, thinking about how he loved her when she was literally untouchable, a walking death sentence. He wanted her, no matter the danger, and he wanted her to feel loved.
Least she could do was to bring him his medicine and make sure he was warm. Because his own foolish ass probably wouldn't.
