Harlock jumped over a crate without slowing and hit the next turn at full speed. His lungs burned. For how long had he been running through this maze? Not that the running was the issue here. He could run for hours if needed. The problem was who was behind him. Because Zero was still there. Fast. Too fast. That was annoying. He could hear his bootsteps closing in.
A full hour of sprinting through alleys, between trains and scrap, and somehow the man refused to lose his edge. Harlock risked a glance over his shoulder. Terrible idea. Warrius was closer than he thought. Hair disheveled. Breathing hard now. Uniform partially unfastened from exertion. Eyes focused. Completely serious.
Handcuffs in hand, ready to be snapped around the pirate’s wrists.
Harlock swore under his breath and accelerated again.
- This stopped being funny forty minutes ago!
- Then just surrender!
Harlock smirked despite himself. Still enough energy to argue. He turned another corner – and his boot slipped into an oil puddle. The world stopped for half a second. He lost footing, slamming hard against the ground, momentum carrying him into a painful slide.
Before he could recover, weight hit him. Warrius caught him fast and hard, one knee pinning his chest to the floor. Metal clicked sharply. One cuff locked around Harlock’s wrist. Then the second. Both men stared at each other, pulse hammering in their ears after the chase.
Warrius bent over him slightly, trying to catch his breath.
- …Got you.
Harlock glared upward.
- …You’re heavy.
Warrius smirked, trying hard to regain some dignity.
- I hope you realize –
Before he could continue, Harlock pulled him in and kissed him. Abrupt, breathless, reckless. Warrius froze.
That was all the opening Harlock needed.
A metallic jingle. Harlock pulled back just enough for Warrius to realize, too late, that the key ring was no longer attached to his belt. The pirate grinned, unlocking his cuffs with infuriating speed.
- You –
Warrius lunged for him but was too slow. Harlock rolled backward to his feet in one smooth motion and took off down the alley again.
- Thanks for the help, Zero!
Warrius remained kneeling on the floor for one stunned second longer, breathing hard, lips still tingling from the kiss, brain visibly struggling to process the sequence of events. Then realization hit. His expression changed instantly.
- Oh, you are dead.
Harlock’s laughter echoed back toward him. And the next instant, Warrius was already running after him again.
