Ever since Sora arrived in Smash, his whole life has turned upside down. Living with so many people, almost a hundred (if his memory serves him right) should be hell, but the space makes up for it. Living in a luxurious mansion in the epitome of video game worlds is something everyone could envy. Besides, the only thing that comes close to being dangerous are Crazy Hand's bounty missions. But putting the simple life aside, there's something else that tends to disturb Sora besides those two, and that's the clones.
"So you're the same person, right?" the brown-haired boy asks, looking at the two Marios, one in his plumber's outfit and the other dressed as a doctor.
“That’s right, I’m Doctor Mario. Besides taking care of the most unfortunate after a fight, I’m a counterpart to your beloved Mario. In my world, I’m just a simple doctor.”
“You don’t have to think too much about this. No, this doesn’t break any kind of time or space or anything like that.” That made Sora shut his mouth.
“How did you know I’d ask that?”
“Do you think you’re the only one who was surprised to see another Mario? Oh, you should have seen how everyone ended up in the Brawl tournament! It was hilarious.” Mario laughed heartily at the memories; he’d even been like that for a while. Seeing another version of himself wasn’t something you saw every day.
“I know it’s not easy to process, seeing two identical people at the same time who aren’t twins can be complicated, but you get used to it over time. It’s Smash, after all! Here, the impossible is possible.” The doctor placed a hand on the boy’s shoulder. Sora stared at the ground, his face a mixture of conflict and confusion, before finally sighing.
“Well, I guess you’re right… It shouldn’t be that strange at this point.” Sora tried to reason. He wanted to believe he’d seen stranger things, but his mind couldn’t think of anything specific.
From that moment on, he had to accept that now that he lived farther away from his hometown, things wouldn’t be so normal. After all, imagine living with the fastest hedgehog in the world or a blocky man who turned everything he broke into pixels. Everyone in this place had their quirks, even him. Even so, he couldn’t help feeling quite confused at times.
Weeks later, he realized that there were two other boys in the mansion who looked exactly alike: Pit and Dark Pit (or Pitto if you want him to punch you in the face.) Sora learned that, unlike Dr. Mario, Dark Pit was born from a cursed mirror in his world, he was supposed to be an emotionless puppet to lead Viridi's troops and eradicate the human race, but he ended up being a living, sentient being, which drastically altered the entire plan.
"So, Miss Palutena, how do you feel about Dark Pit?" he asked, curiosity in his voice. Palutena had asked Sora if he wanted to spend an afternoon with her having tea. This was so they could get to know each other as Sora tended to socialize more with the younger smashers than the adults.
“Um… Well, I really see him as another little Pit, a bit more ferocious if we're being honest, but quite nice. I remember he was a bit complicated at first, but after those two saved me… Well, I can't deny I've grown fond of him.” She admitted, looking at her mug, a smile spreading across her face.
“It sounds like you know him quite well, I'd like to assume.” He quickly corrected himself; he didn't really know much about these people and didn't want to seem clueless.
“Of course I know! Pit's always talking about him. Love has truly made my little angel fall to his knees for him…” She chuckled softly at her own words, remembering the many times Pit had told her about his little fling with Dark Pit.
“Excuse me… 'Fall to his knees for him'? Are those two…?” He asked, surprised, setting his mug aside and placing both hands on the table.
“Ah, you haven’t heard, have you? Well, yes, Dark Pit and Pit are in a romantic relationship. It sounds quite surprising given how different they are, but they really do make a cute couple.” Palutena closes her eyes and smiles, mesmerized by the romance between her captain of her guards and his counterpart, self-love at its finest.
“…Wow… I never thought those two were a thing… That explains a lot though.” For a few moments, he couldn’t believe it, but after reviewing some of the interactions he’d witnessed between them, the idea of them being a couple now seemed a bit more plausible.
“Don’t worry, little Sora, I know it’s a bit complicated to process all this, but they decided to be a couple even considering they’re practically the same person. I like to think they’re the only ones who can understand each other better than anyone else in this world, and that’s quite sweet, if you ask me.” Palutena took Sora’s hand, looking at him with eyes that made the boy understand that she herself had gone through that surprise, but that with time one gets used to seeing these things around the place.
In a spot a little further away from the garden, Dark Pit and Pit were sitting under a tree. Pitto was playing with Pit's hair while he drew in a notebook he’d found nearby. The dark-haired angel was reading aloud so that Pit could also enjoy reading since he couldn't do it himself
“Hey, Pitto, did it ever cross your mind that we’d end up like this…?” he asked softly, his eyes trying to meet his counterpart’s gaze. Pitto lowered his book to look at him with a serene expression, but he noticed him blushing, which made him smile.
“If you want my honesty, no. I thought you were very naive about many things, but since we got here, you’ve only proven me wrong. You’re quite intelligent, even if you can’t read… or write… or—” He felt Pit stand up from his lap only to cover his mouth with his finger, Dark Pit smiled mockingly.
“I understand, I understand. Geez, you don’t have to make fun of that all the time. It’s a little tiring, you know?” Pit seemed a little annoyed, but it didn’t last long. Dark Pit removed his finger from his lips, leaned in and planted a kiss on Pit’s lips. It was short, but incredibly sweet for both of them.
“I can’t help it, it’s something I always like to remind you of.” He said with a laugh. Pit was a little surprised but couldn’t help but smile softly, afterward a blush also appeared on his cheeks. What would he do without the love of his dark angel in this tournament that could be so suffocating? Not even he knows, but he doesn’t want to think about it either. They are both here and now, and he believes it’s the best thing that could have happened to them for the people they are today.
