It was raining.
L never liked the rain, it was too wet and he didnt like how it felt. But today, he was outside, watching it come down from the sky.
He doesnt know how long hes out there until he notices a movement and hears a faint shout. Light had come out. "What are you doing?" He would call out. L pretended not to hear him.
When Light finally came over to L, he furrowed his brows in confusion. "What are you doing out here? Youre soaking wet." He sighed. L just looked back at the sky for a few moments. "The bells are unusually loud today." He said quietly, glancing back at Light.
Light just shook his head and brought L back inside. "You're being weirder than usual, Ryuzaki. Did something happen?" Light asked as they dried off on the stairs. L let out a low hum. "Not yet. I know it will happen soon." He said. Light looked at him for a few moments before continuing to dry off when he noticed L in front of him. He didnt say anything before he crouched before Light and took his foot, beginning to dry it off. Light just watched for a few moments before his gaze drifted to Ls face. Water droplets were coming down from his hair, so after a beat, Light reached up and rubbed Ls hair with the towel. "You're getting water everywhere." He said softly.
They sat there for a while, it was a nice moment. Light felt... content. He hasnt felt this way in awhile.
Then, Ls phone rang. He glanced at Light before answering.
...
The room was bathed in red and L was motionless in Lights arms.
Light wanted to laugh, he'd won, hadn't he? It was supposed to be his perfect victory. So why did he feel so numb? He stared at L, shaking him slightly. It didnt feel right, it didnt feel like a victory. All he felt was loss. "Hey, Ryuzaki wake up... if this is some- some test to see if im kira it wont work because im not- so wake up now..." He whispered, his voice cracking on the last words.
L didnt stir.
Light laughed, but it was devoid of any true mirth. "Ryuzaki- Ryuzaki wake up!" He tried again. He glanced around the room. "Why wont he wake up!?" His voice broke completely.
He didnt understand. It was an easy win, so why wasn't he happy? Why was the only thing he felt this gaping hole, this numbness? All his genius failed him in that moment. Why did such an important win feel like such a profound loss?
