Army Dreamers

Summary:

So, some sort of afterlife exists.
Leon and Edie can watch their living partners.
And they talk about stuff.

Notes:

randomly thought I could make some bittersweet angst

Work Text:

"Do you think they'll ever move on?"

Edie stepped over to where Leon sat, then lowered themself next to him.

The scene in from of them seemed...lifeless. Dead.

Ironic, as Leon and Edie were the dead ones, not those three.

"Maybe. I don't think so, though. Even if they learn to heal, it'll always hurt somewhere deep down."

Edie watched as Everett sat down at the table, opposite Noah and Freya. The room was too big for just three people (five, if you counted dead people).

"Wow, really think you were that important to them?" Edie smirked, earning a glare from Leon.

"Kidding, kidding."

...

"He misses you a lot. I can tell."

"Same with Freya."

Leon was staring intently at Noah. Still with all the love in his eyes from the last night they had spent together.

Even after being shot.

Even after watching him marry Freya and constantly see her as him.

It wasn't really cheating.

More like...replacement. A placeholder, until he could see Leon again.

"What they did last night was..."

"Yeah. Well, I don't really blame them? I mean, we've all been through so much, and they're both dealing with a lot right now."

"What would happen if they...fell in love?"

Leon'e eyes finally drifted away from Noah's seat.

"They wouldn't. At least, Noah wouldn't. Cause he's...y'know."

"Well yeah, I know he's gay. I'm not oblivious. But, it doesn't have to be romantic love." Edie stood up and walked over to stand behind Noah and Freya's chairs. There was a decently sized gap between them, so Edie slotted themself between the two seats.

"There's something more than hate and guilt between them. But not something that fits into friendship or romance."

Looking between Noah and Freya, back and forth, Leon just shrugged.

"I can see it."

"Hey Edie?"

"Yeah? What is it, I'm watching a movie."

"Wow...still can't get over the fact they have a mini home cinema here-" His gazed drifted to Edie's seat, and then the one next to them.

Everett. Curled up with a half empty tub of ice cream, looked absolutely exhausted.

"Why-...why are you right next to him?"

"Look, I'm not-...I haven't forgiven him, I just-...I mean, he's still family, and-"

"You're worried about him."

"Yeah...doesn't mean I think he's a good person, but..."

Leon wasn't mad though. As Edie's gaze turned to him, she was met with understanding.

"Noah literally shot me and then ran away. And I don't hate him. When it comes to people we love, we just can't help but care."

The other seat next to Edie was empty (the whole room was, to be honest), so he sat down and directed most of his attention to the screen.

The Hunger Games.

"Especially you."

"Hm?" Edie flinched a little.

"You've always cared too much for your own good."

"You can't say that! Personality-wise, you're pretty much a carbon copy of me!"

Leon nudged their shoulder, before gesturing towards the screen.

"I think our main worries should be whether Everett takes inspiration from this to start his next grand fuck up..."

"Leon?"

"Edie..."

"Did you..."

"Yeah, I heard everything between them."

Leon invited Edie to sit down on the floor with him. There wasn't much to do; they couldn't interact with anything so here came another hour of sitting and talking.

"I...it's like I don't recognise either of them anymore."

"Well, people change. Especially when they've been through a lot."

"I guess..."

...

"Maybe it's your fault Edie's dead! If you hadn't killed Soraya and fucked up all our lives, Edie wouldn't have ran off to some random country and fucking died!"

"Or maybe you didn't try hard enough to make them stay. Maybe they didn't love you as much as you thought."

...

Edie heard someone get slapped and immediately went into the room. But Everett was already storming off, and though Edie wished they could follow both of them, they stuck with Freya.

...

"I didn't know who's side to take...I just stayed with Freya until she calmed down."

"I wonder if they can ever...feel our presence or something?"

"I hope so."

Leon, however, had followed Everett. But he wouldn't bring up what he saw. It would destroy Edie.

But there was something else he wanted to talk about.

"Can I...tell you something?"

"Yeah? Go ahead."

"Noah wants to join me. He...wants to die, and I know it. He shouldn't, but..."

Edie placed their hand over Leon's.

"I don't want him to die. He has so much more life left to live, but-...but it's not like I can tell him that." His voice cracked towards the end, and Edie slowly pulled him into a hug.

...

"Do you think we ever get to leave this place? Go to some sort of heaven or something?"

"Maybe when we move on."

"I'd rather wait for them to join us."
