Gibby Gilbert’s Gym Class, 1:57 PM (First Bell)
“Jessie, are you excited for another day of Gibby Gilbert’s Gym Class?” Miguel asks Jessie as they make their way to the gym.
She bursts out laughing, “I don’t know why we keep calling it that.”
“Keep calling it what?” Blake joins in. “Also does anyone remember who’s on our team for softball? I kinda forgot.”
“You’re on my team, Blake.” Chelsea informs her as they all walk down the hallway. A hallway monitor glares at them as they walk past with a “Shhhh! There are IB students testing right there!”.
“Yeah Chelsea,” Blake snickers, “everyone shut up.”
“Uh, y’all there’s like no one in the gym–” Iris says as she runs up to them. “Do we like, go around or. . .?”
“I heard we’re in the gym,” Miguel tells them. “I think I heard Mateo say it.”
“I saw Ashley and Coraline go down the uh. . . y’know the boys locker room hall.” Iris fumbles, motioning toward the hall further down.
Miguel, Chelsea, Jessie, Iris, and Blake walk down the hallway that leads to the Boys Locker Room, where they see the man himself, Gibby Gilbert.
“Everyone head into the gym this way. I don’t know what you’re all doing out here just standing about and making so much noise.” Gibby Gilbert says, with the most annoying tone to ever exist.
As they enter the gym from the other side, Jessie catches Chelsea discreetly rolling her eyes at their fat gym teacher. By the time the group walks in, there are already students inside with Mrs. Pruny Pacific(Winslet) already yelling at them to get into their softball groups.
“Everyone let’s go! What are we waiting for? Get in the same groups as last time. Single file lines behind the cones!”
The group went to their line with three kids already seated there. At least they assumed these people were on the same team as them last time. Miguel was doubtful but when has he ever paid attention?
“They’re letting me wear the hat!” Iris skidded down their line and plopped down beside Chelsea with the mitt and hat she brought from home in hand.
“Wait, now I wish I brought my hat.” Chelsea whines. She promptly tries to snatch Iris’ baseball cap from her hand and fails.
“Okay, everyone listen up! The period’s started.” Gibby Gilbert shouts at them over their conversations, “Today we will go outside to the lower field and play our second game of softball.
The fat PE teacher points to each of the teams and tells them what field and where they will be playing.
“Jordan’s team! You’ll be versing Andersons’ team on the lower field. Jordan, you guys will be batting first. Anderson, you guys are on the field.” Gibby Gilbert points to Miguel, “You guys will be batting on the far field and Perdo’s team will be playing on the field with the gloves.”
“You guys know where it is, by the batter’s box.” Mr. B says, leaning on his cart, with the team attendance sheet on it.
“Alright, everyone!” Mrs. Pruny Pacific shouts at them, “We will now be going outside through the boy’s locker room hallway, the same way you guys entered! Remember, there are high school students testing so you need to be quiet!”
As they get up and begin to walk outside, Jessie squeezes between Iris and Blake. “So who’s excited to play softball?” She says with fake enthusiasm.
“I am!” Iris responds with a slight skip in her step as she puts her hat on.
“Okay, so shut up.” Miguel calls from behind.
“Dude, I wish I brought my glove from my old softball team, but I totally forgot.” Blake sighs, “Now I’ll have to play with the mysterious weird ones from school…”
“Womp, womp.” Miguel huffs with a little laugh while Jessie begins drawling off in a ramble about something to him.
Chelsea attempts to steal Iris’ mitt again, and actually succeeds this time. She snatches it and starts running ahead, Iris close on her heels.
“Chelsea!” Iris shouts, running down the other before getting caught behind two people, causing Chelsea to get ahead.
“Run, Chelsea, run!” Jessie calls as they all sprint past the tennis courts, dodging around the other kids and laughing.
Iris catches up, as well as the rest of the group as they make it to the far field. She snatches her hat back and Chelsea mutters something that was not very nice under her breath. They see one of their teammates grab the bat, and they know they're in for a rough game of softball. From past experience—mostly with kickball, the worst gym class sport ever in their minds—they doubt they’ll get to bat even once.
