Work Text:
Before Grace died Rocky could tell he was getting bad. He was getting weaker and slower, and sleeping longer and more often. Rocky knew humans didn’t live that long but Grace didn’t even make it to 75.
Rocky could feel himself reaching this point in his long life. It’s been many decades since Grace died but Rocky couldn’t forget the day. The day that Grace took his last breath. All his potential never to be. New generations of Eridians only talk of Grace instead of talking to him directly.
On graces bed during his last breaths next to Rocky. The only one in the room. “I’m getting sleepy, bud” Grace said quiet and sad. “Watch me while I sleep?” Rocky chirps as a response “Always” Grace slowly closed his eyes and drifted. His chest slowing and slowing until it stopped.
Rocky sits in Graces enclosure thinking about what Grace and him could’ve done if Grace had more time. Rocky wishes his best friend had more time. More time to teacher, learn, and live. He thinks Grace could’ve gone back home if Grace had more time.
Time is something everybody lacks. Rocky’s life, like Graces, got cut short. He was weak from all the exposure to radiations. Cutting off a few decades from his life. At the time he wished he could go with Grace. To wherever they wanted after death. To the stars to heaven or anywhere as long as they were together.
They could’ve been together if they had more time. Time Time Time Time. All the needed was more time. Instead they got less time. Less time to invent. Less time to joke with eachother. Less time to teach. Less time together.
Less and less and less time. Their time has been stolen from them. Ripped from their life to punish them for saving the stars.
If only they had more time
