Work Text:
It was a late summer evening, the type where the fireflies started to flicker about in the air and the cicadas started to buzz. The world was holding its breath, waiting for the quiet calm of the night to free it from the oppressive heat of the day. It was on this evening that Parrot sat on the spruce porch of their house, deep in concentration and working on the spyglass. The sound of footsteps on wood came from behind him. He glanced behind him to see Wifies.
“What are you working on, Parrot?” Wifies asked, sitting beside him.
“On the spyglass…” Parrot muttered.
“Well, that’s kind of obvious,” he grinned, trying to peek at the copper tool.
“I’m carving our names,” Parrot said annoyedly, holding up the spyglass. The curved glass lens caught the dying light, sparkling blindingly for a moment. The shiny brass surface, polished painstakingly over and over again, reflected a perfected, golden version of the sunset. And carved into the rim of the spyglass were the words:
Wifies+Parrot
Eternal proof of their friendship.
Or, at least, he thought so.
That day in the white dome, the spyglass shattered as it blew up. Their friendship in pieces, unredeemable shards lying on the stone crater. Shards that would only end up hurting them if they tried to put it back together.
Sitting on the porch, with a friend he desperately wants to trust but can’t quite, not anymore, Parrot traces the unblemished, uncarved surface of this new spyglass. He wants to carve Theo+Parrot but can’t bring himself to, because that would mean exposing his heart to someone who could stab it all over again. And he isn’t sure if he can survive that.
As he gazes into the lightening sky, his thumb brushes over an indent, and when he looks down, he swears he can see the words Wifies+Parrot again.
