Chapter Text
The low hum of the humidifier was the only sound in the room, a stark contrast to the thumping bass that had been rattling Juhoon’s skull at the studio only an hour ago. James was already half-buried under a mountain of blankets, the glow of his laptop screen illuminating the sharp, focused line of his profile. He was probably still tweaking a transition for their next performance—even when he was “resting,” his brain was still counting beats.
“Hyung..” Juhoon murmured, his voice dropping into that deep, gravelly register that always seemed to catch people off guard. He didn’t wait for an invite, toeing off his socks & sliding into the narrow gap between James & the edge of the mattress. The mattress dipped under his weight, & for a second, the cool air of the room bit at his skin before he sought out James' heat.
James didn’t even look up, but his hands automatically reached out to steady Juhoon, an instinctual move born from years of sharing spaces. “You’re late. I thought you were going to crash in the lounge.”
“Too loud,” Juhoon grunted, tucking his chin over James’ shoulder to peek at the screen. He let his heavy limbs go slack, pressing his chest against James’ back. “& the sofa smells like the maknae’s protein shakes. It’s haunting me. I needed somewhere that smells like... you.”
James let out a huff of a laugh—that quiet, breathy sound he only made when the cameras weren’t rolling. He finally clicked the laptop shut & set it on the nightstand, the room plunging into a soft, blue-tinted darkness. He turned his full attention to Juhoon, shifting his body until they were tangled together in a messy knot of limbs.
“You’re overthinking the choreography again, aren't you?” James asked, his eyes searching Juhoon’s in the dim light. He reached out, his fingers brushing a stray strand of hair away from Juhoon's forehead with a tenderness that made Juhoon’s chest ache.
Juhoon stiffened slightly. “My center turn felt heavy today. I’m lagging on the upbeat, & if I mess up the formation—”
“It didn’t,” James countered, his voice firm but gentle. He shifted, pulling Juhoon up until they were eye to eye. He used his thumb to trace the line of Juhoon’s jaw. It was a gesture so casual, yet so intimate, it made Juhoon’s heart do a slow, dizzying roll.
“You’re precise, Jju-ah. You’re the heart of that formation. Trust the work we put in. Trust me.”
Juhoon leaned into the touch, his eyes fluttering shut. “I trust you more than the work. Always.”
James' expression softened into something almost achy. He leaned forward, his nose brushing against Juhoon’s in a lingering, sweet "eskimo kiss" that had Juhoon giggling softly. When Juhoon didn’t pull away, James closed the distance properly.
The kiss wasn’t flashy or cinematic. It was slow & grounding—the kind of kiss that tasted like shared secrets & last night’s coffee. It was James’ way of pulling Juhoon out of his own head & back into the quiet safety of their room. It was soft, lingering, & filled with a silent promise that here, behind closed doors, they didn't have to be perfect idols.
Juhoon sighed into it, his hands finding the hem of James’ oversized hoodie, gripping the fabric as if to make sure this was real. He pulled himself closer, wanting to eliminate every millimeter of space between them. When they finally pulled apart, James didn't let go. Instead, he hooked an arm around Juhoon’s waist, pulling him flush against his chest & dragging the heavy duvet up over both of them until they were completely cocooned.
“Sleep,” james commanded, his voice vibrating through Juhoon’s chest. “No more choreo, no more lyrics, no more counting to eight in your sleep. Just us.” Juhoon hummed, the tension finally draining out of his limbs as he breathed in the familiar, comforting scent of James’ cologne. He nuzzled his face into the crook of James' neck, leaving a tiny, soft peck on the sensitive skin there.
“Only if you stop producing in your head,” Juhoon whispered against his skin. “I can practically hear the drums looping in your brain from here.”
James gave a small, defeated smile, tightening his grip & pressing a final, lingering kiss to the top of Juhoon’s head. He rested his chin on Juhoon's soft hair, closing his eyes & letting the rhythm of their breathing sync up.
“Deal,” James whispered, his voice thick with sleep. “Goodnight, Jju-ah.”
“Goodnight, Hyung,” Juhoon breathed, drifting off into the most peaceful sleep he’d had in weeks.
