All about Hunk!

Summary:

This is a meta I've been adding to over the years about Hunk from Voltron!
He's my favorite character from this show (though the paladins are all dear to me) and I wanted to share about how I understand him. I hope it's fun to read and that maybe it'll inspire some of you!

Notes:

This is a meta I've been adding to over the years! It all started with a post on tumblr in 2018 for a prompt about one's favorite Voltron Character. Post tumblr "porn ban" I moved to twitter and expanded on this quite a bit. Now it's not really available anymore, I did copy it on pillowfort and for th VLD 10 years fest, I finally decided to move it to AO3! And to expand on it. I still have a lot to say about Hunk!!

Disclaimer: My only aim here is to nerd about my interpretation of a character I like, and maybe provide inspiration & ideas to content creators who might enjoy depicting him. It's not meant as an in depth critique of canon, I just tend to ignore the bits that I find weirdly written. Or to find an in-universe explanation that works for me. Other interpretations are just as valid as mine.

Chapter 1: Hunk's intelligence

One of Hunk's traits that first come to mind is that he is really clever, in a way that is vividly creative, practical, with a lot of “out of the box” thinking that sometimes gets him to draw surprising conclusions.

I love how it completes Pidge’s more specialized and analytic intelligence and how well they work together.

Hunk, to Pidge: "Yah, but if you could find a way to amplify the sensors-'

While Pidge is focused on computer science and intel gathering, Hunk digs in many different fields: he does mechanics, and also some programming. He’s also able to understand the weblum’s biology and make up a plan based on this.

Hunk, to Keith: The scaultrit gland somehow secrets mucus, or saliva, or something gross,"

Hunk to Keith (continued): "which becomes crystalized."

Hunk to Keith (continued): "The only problem is, I think that we have to trigger the weblum's defense mecahnism."

On the Balmera, he comes up with a battle strategy.

His out of the box way of thinking helps him find a clever strategy in The ark of Taujeer: when the planet is coming appart, Hunk comes up with the idea of using the vines from the Green Lion as stitches!

 

Hunk, in the yellow Lion: Well I was thinking that if you aim it at th cacks in the planet..."

Hunk (continued): "...the vines could act like stiches!"

This is also why I don’t mind his passion for food : it’s another field where we see how creative and clever he is : he can cook outstanding food with ingredients he doesn’t even know. This includes cooking for aliens whose tastes and eating habits he doesn’t know either.
