Chapter Text
“Coco?” Qifrey began “Have we had the opportunity to properly introduce you to magic yet?”
Cocos head snapped around, causing her to go off balance immediately, but manages to catch herself before falling over.
“Introduce me to Magic? You mean MORE magic?”
“Yes Coco”, he chuckled, “Correct me but this is the first night since you arrived that we’ve had clear skies, right? Well in that case girls come outside, there is a story I must tell.”
After toggling off all nearby light spells the girls followed Qifrey outside and laid down in the grass. They formed, as was natural to any witch with experience, a circle. It was still confusing for Coco but the other four had already sunken to into the grass. They lay there in what would’ve looked like a perfect spell, were their heads a valid sigil and had they similarly long bodies. Coco joined them and after managing to sort through everyone’s limbs and hair she got the first look at the stars since she had left her home.
“It all began a long time ago, before the creation of humans or witches, in a world that had not yet seen the silverwood tree nor the conflict it would bring.”
Coco tried imagining a world without humans, one where any day was governed by the singing of birds the wind in trees and the occasional fight over food. Peaceful.
“In fact, some believe that it was so long ago that there was not yet any life at all. In that time before life when our sun must have been born. And once the sun and the Stars were here, we think the planets must have formed and with them the moon. “
Coco thought about this about how much she never knew, never could’ve known if not for that fateful night.
“Master Qifrey, forgive me but what is a planet?”
“Of course, you have not been told yet.” He points over to a bright point on the horizon, where the sun had just set. “That there is the planet Venus, the brightest of all planets. And over there, just in that group of stars, that looks like two witches, the bright one that is the planet Jupiter. The biggest and most beautiful planet of them all, it has stripes on its surface and four of its own tiny moons.”
“A planet Coco is one of the few things, that circle around earth, they move every day, just a little, only slightly in front of the stars. Just like the moon and sun only that those are far closer and far bigger.”, Qifrey’s voice immediately turned a bit sad, “I will need to show them to you in large on another day Coco, I do not have the spell here and I am afraid I cannot make it.”
“Coco, we taught you that all spells are within circles, right? Well, what do you see when you look over there to the horizon where you see the full moon?”
“A circle Master Qifrey?”
“Yes Coco.”, he was almost happy with Coco grasping this so quickly, the kind of pride that always made him feel a little closer to the world and plants around him, “And coco, what would happen if let’s say since the time before life itself rocks from the stars fell onto the Moon and damaged it, drawing into its surface?”
“Master Qifrey, you don’t mean to say they create spells on the moon, do you? But spells need Silverwood ink how can that exist on the moon?”
Agott scoffed a little at just how obvious Coco mad it that she was an outsider.
“Obviously the stars themselves use their own magic. Just like all Magic was given to us by the stars.”
“Yes Agott, that is right, the moon does not need conjuring ink. It is magic itself. The spells on the moon are what makes life on earth the way it is. Many witches are working on figuring out what spells are up there, but most are far to complex for us to even recognise them as spells. We also don’t yet know if the spells are all part of one moon spell or if every crater is its own spell. But we have found a few so far. There is a spell which some witches believe causes the tides, but many believe that there are also spells for the weather, the wind, maybe life itself. So, look around Coco above yourself you see magic in its purest form, maybe even the magic that makes you. But this is why tonight we are especially lucky. It is a full moon, so all the moons magic, whether it is from the craters themselves or the shape of the moon, arrives on earth.”
