Who Is Smitty? The New Pop Phenomenon Taking the Internet By Storm
Before this year, not a lot of people knew about William Smith, known by his stage name Smitty. Only 19 years old, Smitty has been making music his whole life, starting with classical training then moving on to more pop-sounding projects later in life. Previously unknown, he found his big break this summer when his song Touching Teal went viral on TikTok.
Smitty wrote the song the summer he moved across the country, from his native Boston to sunny California, following a transfer from Boston College to San Jose State University. He talked to us today about his songwriting process, the meaning behind his hit song Touching Teal, and what plans he had for the future following his success.

It’s about keeping it together for the sake of a good thing, and ignoring all the signs it can’t last. It’s catharsis. Screaming at the ocean and letting go of all that shit holding you back. You know?
RS: So the ‘teal’ mentioned in the song…?
Smitty: Would be the San Francisco Bay, yeah. Or the Pacific. Whichever body of water you want, honestly. It’s, well, it’s the idea of two bodies of water, across the country from each other. We used to—uh—we used to go out to the beachfront, by the Atlantic. I guess it comes from the idea of exploring a new ocean—body of water, whatever—with new people, forgetting about him but also not because—you know?”]

I listened to his music for the first time last week and MAJOR agree!! For anyone that wants a new queer artist to listen to, i cannot recommend enough.
For anyone that wants specific recs, these are my favorites:
1) Touching Teal
- An obvious choice because its the viral one, but genuinely go listen to it. Go. You’ll understand
- Its sort of a rock-ish song with a really funky bass and some KILLER drums
- about moving on from a relationship that meant more to you than the other guy
- Kind of implied that the relationship was with a closeted guy (from his university?) that cared more about hiding the relationship than maintaining it
- Featuring a really angry bridge after a lot of sadness, which im very here for
2) Open Waters & Tiny Boats
- One of my personal favorites
- A deep and melancholic reflection on how a single day affected his relationship
- Beautifully yearny and also has beautiful piano that he composed himself (he’s classically trained!!)
- Pre-breakup which makes it a little awkward looking back but its still very beautiful
3) Mass at Dawn
- GODDDDDD as someone who was raised catholic. Holy Shit
- Its about queerness and the catholic church okay
- Hes gone on record to say his parents are v supportive of his sexuality but he faced problems with internalised issues from his church
- So the song grapples with coming to terms with being gay and being okay with it while still holding on to your religion
- Its so beautiful please just go listen

Yes, you heard that right! We have Smitty in the Tank to sing the anthem for tonight’s game. We gave him a tour of SAP Center earlier today, check it out ➡ t.co/2u3hbrje
[ID: vertical video, opening shot of Smitty smiling at the camera, dressed in casual clothes: a loose, slightly cropped t-shirt in dark teal, and jeans.
“Hey there Sharks nation,” he says to the camera. “I’m Smitty and I’m here to take a look around the Shark Tank. Let’s go.”
The video speeds up as Smitty turns to walk down the hall. He stops at a door that opens onto the Sharks locker room. It’s mostly empty, save for Macklin Celebrini and Alexander Wennberg. They both greet Smitty as the social media admin explains who he is and why he’s there.
“Is your song the one that plays in the arena sometimes?” Celebrini asks him. “It’s pretty good, man. At least, the ten seconds I’ve heard.”
“Thanks,” Smitty grins. “Should listen to the full thing sometime.”
“Promise,” Celebrini says, grinning back. “You play any hockey? We’ll get you on the ice with us.”
Smith laughs—giggles, more like—and says, “Only a little as a kid. Nowhere near your level.”
“Hey, man,” Wennberg says, clapping him on the shoulder. It jolts Smitty a little. “Anyone can handle a stick. C’mon, lets find you some gear.”
It’s barely audible, but Smitty says quietly, “Yeah, I can handle a stick, just not that kind of stick.” It is a purposeful choice from the editor to keep it in.
The video cuts to Smitty standing on the ice, a little precariously, wearing oversized gear and fiddling with a stick. The admin behind the camera asks him a question:
“So, Smitty, what’s your background with hockey? Obviously, we’ve seen the Sharks calendar on your Instagram, but how long have you been a fan?”
Smitty looks a little more awkward now, balanced on his skates. “Uh, well, I’m a Boston boy through and through, so I grew up a Bruins fan—still am, sorry—and, you know, we had a team at BC, but I didn’t really… go to any of their games. But I thought, since I’m moving to San Jose, might as well get into the teams around here, you know?”
Suddenly, Macklin Celebrini appears at his side and throws an arm over Smitty’s shoulders. “And he’s a fan for life now, right?”
“Right,” Smitty laughs, shoving Macklin’s arm off him.
Macklin perks up, grinning wide. “Hey, Smitty, show the camera your jersey.”
Smitty scowls at him, then turns to the camera. “This was the only extra they had in my size,” he insists, then turns around to show ‘CELEBRINI’ on the nameplate, and a ‘71’ in big letters.
Macklin laughs, loud and bright, attracting the attention of the other Sharks scattered around the ice running their own drills. “You’ve gotta wear it tonight for the anthem.”
“You wish!”
“Bet you on it,” Macklin smirks.
The video cuts to Smitty in the middle of the ice, holding a stick with determination. A set of cones were lined up in front of him. You could vaguely see Tyler Toffoli and Mario Ferraro watching in the back.
“It’s pretty simple,” Eklund tells Smitty, lining up a puck with his stick. He demonstrates the drill, slowly moving the puck between the cones so Smitty can see each step. He gets to the end without disturbing a single cone. “See? Easy, man. You’ve got it.”
Smitty scrutinizes the setup. “Sure, easy. Alright.”
He takes the same position Eklund started in, stick on puck, then starts. He manages to get the puck through the first cone, transition the puck to the other side of the stick, then bring it back through the second cone, all while Macklin cheers for him from the back. Then Smitty slips, stumbling on his skates and losing the puck as it slides out of frame.
Macklin reaches out and stabilises Smitty, laughing loudly about Smitty’s loss. “Close one, bud!”
“One more!” Smitty insisted, already reaching back for the stick and looking for the puck. Someone behind them passed the puck back over. Smitty missed catching it on the blade of his stick, but recovered it quickly. “I’ve got it now.”
The video cut through a compilation of at least five more attempts, each of them ending with the puck flying away before Smitty could get to the end. The final cut though has the puck reaching the end and Smitty throwing his arms up in celebration, almost hitting Eklund with the stick. Both Eklund and Macklin crowd Smitty, pulling him into a celly like he scored a goal. Some of the guys that were watching in the background—including Ty Dellandrea and Fabian Zetterlund—join in on the group hug.
As the huddle disperses, we see Macklin grinning widely at Smitty, arm still thrown around his shoulders. “You still lost the bet,” Macklin tells Smitty. “Cuz you didn’t get it first try.”
Smitty barely looks annoyed, grinning widely. “Whatever.”
The video transitions into a compilation of clips overlaid with music, mostly of Smitty messing around on the ice with some of the Sharks. They skate around the rink, pass the puck around, and let Smitty take a few shots on Mackenzie Blackwood. Most of the clips heavily feature Macklin Celebrini close by.
After the montage, the video cuts to Smitty back in his normal clothes—wearing Macklin’s jersey over his original t-shirt—standing by the glass of the rink while the Sharks do their actual practice behind him.
“So, how did you find the Shark Tank?” The admin behind the camera asks.
“Honestly, really awesome,” Smitty says with a smile and a slight flush. “The guys were all super welcoming, and they showed me a good time, even though I’m pretty bad at hockey. I’m excited to be up in the stands watching the game, and singing the anthem to start it off. Pretty wicked, I think. I’m excited.”
“And have we made a lifelong Sharks fan out of you?” The admin joked.
Smitty laughs. “I think I have to be now; the guys won me over.”
“That’s what we want to hear!” She says, “Well, thanks so much Smitty. We’ll see you at the game.”
“See you at the game,” Smitty echoes, and the video cuts to black.]

The SYMBOLISM though of smitty’s discography being mostly low-tempo, yearning, introspective, and then this song is the ENTIRE opposite. Theres a new type of joy for life in it. It feels like an exploration of his new location, and the experiences he’s had since moving. He moved away from home!! He’s FROM massachusetts, born & raised, so going all the way across the country to san jose is a HUGE stepping stone. For most people this would be scary, but this is smitty showing that it’s reinvigorated him! He’s left the conventions he knew but is thriving in a new situation. And i LOVE THAT for him!!!

smitty_music Firstly, I want to thank all of you for supporting me and listening to my music. I never thought I’d get this much attention, and it’s been pretty overwhelming the past few months because of all of the support I wasn’t expecting. Making music has for years been a way for me to get out all of my thoughts and feelings and make peace with them. I put it out to the world in hopes that maybe somebody would relate. Never in my life could I have imagined just how many would, and for that i am so grateful.
I would like to be fully transparent with everybody, new and old fans alike. I’m still a full-time student pursuing a degree. While I’m studying I can’t shift my attention fully to my music career. I know this is a disappointment to a lot of you, but this is something I can’t compromise on. A tour is gonna have to wait for the summer (something I hope to bring you next year if interest holds). In the meantime, I’ve been working on an album, which will be released before the summer comes, so keep an eye out. To my local fans, concerts in San Jose & surrounding Bay Area will keep happening, on a limited basis just like before.

SO many things to note about smitty’s grammys performance. first i know people were disappointed he wasnt gonna perform touching teal, but choosing to do up&at them instead is such a symbolic choice. Smitty said in an interview that touching teal was like a rant, letting out all his feelings and throwing them to the wind. up&at them is how he’s moving on. Its literally saying “right. We had our heart broken and it hurt, but we’ve physically moved ourselves away from that situation and now we’re gonna pick up the pieces and have the time of our fucking lives in SPITE of that”. Choosing to perform it at the grammys over the song that pushed him into the spotlight i believe is sticking to that idea. He’s Healing and he’s not gonna let that bum ass man define his achievements anymore!!!!

Firstly, we have to understand smitty’s life circumstances. He’s currently having a confusing codependent friendship and maybe romance no one is sure with a san jose based hockey player, macklin celebrini. Allegedly, his last song, slow dance options, is about him. Allegedly.
That being said, there’s a few things here that hint towards it being about celebrini. In the corner there’s a paper with ‘71’ drawn on it, celebrini’s number. We can see the corner of a Sharks jersey on smitty’s chair, and the only sharks jersey we know he owns is a celebrini one. Leaning against the wall is the stick celebrini gifted him last month. Lots of little hints that he’s influencing the writing process, at the very least.
The reason i think that this picture is Very staged and intentional is that none of that mess of papers includes actual hints at the new song. No new snippets of lyrics we haven’t heard yet or anything. Some brainstorming notes, but I can’t understand most of it, aside from a few things that hint towards a more love song angle. The fact that there’s so many papers there and yet None of them are accidentally a lyric hint makes me think it was all extremely precisely placed by smitty, so those bits of celebrini must Also be precisely placed.
In conclusion, smitty is writing a beautiful gay love song about a hockey player, in direct contrast to (ALLEGEDLY) his situationship in boston. God bless

SMITTY: Well, I picked up Mack this morning cuz he had to go fix his tooth, and we had a late breakfast after. We decided I’d be driving us around all day, since we were gonna do this podcast in my place-
MACK: Jumbo’s place is too loud, you wouldn’t be able to hear us.
SMITTY: Yeah (laughs) but that’s a different story. So, I took Mack to get his tooth fixed, we had breakfast, then I told him “hey, I gotta drop by the studio to pick up some stuff”. I got held up a little so it took longer than we thought, and he was in the car getting pissed off-
MACK: It was like fifteen minutes! He told me “It’s just gonna be five minutes” and he’s gone for fifteen!
SMITTY: Yeah, okay (rolls eyes) he’s got the patience of a five year old, this guy.
MACK: Hey!
SMITTY: And then I had to drop him off for your, like, captain thing?
TYLER: Cooch’s retirement press conference.
SMITTY: Yeah, that. Then I went back to the studio to get some work done, so really, I’m going out of my way to drive him around, and what do I get in return? Complaints!
MACK: (knocks his shoulder into Will’s) You get tons of stuff in return.
SMITTY: Sure, but this time, it was complaints. And! And! He shattered my fucking windshield!
(Tyler and Cat immediately laugh)
MACK: He’s exaggerating, it’s not that bad
SMITTY: No- no- we skipped a bit, hold on. He went to the press thingy, I went to the studio, then I went back to pick him up so we could get lunch then come here, but-

SMITTY: Yeah, sorry I have a job. He got pissed off ‘cuz I had to spend 5 minutes going up to pick up a notebook.
MACK: It wasn’t five minutes, it was at least, like, ten.
SMITTY: Oh, cry me a river (grins at Mack) again, you broke my windshield, bitch.
CAT: Sorry, can you tell us how, exactly, he broke it? What did he do? Throw a rock at it?
SMITTY: Worse. He punched it.
MACK: Okay, I lightly hit it. It was barely a punch!

CAT: okay, now, I’m curious- what were you guys up to during Christmas? I don’t think I ever asked, even though we had that New Year’s Eve party. I saw you were both in San Jose?
MACK: Yeah, we were both in San Jose
CAT: What were you up to? Have any fun, had any celebrations?
SMITTY: (smirks) Oh, did we.
MACK: Don’t say it like that!
SMITTY: Say it like what-?
MACK: (overlapping) We had a normal Christmas.
SMITTY: (rolls eyes) You’re no fun. Yeah, it was pretty normal. Going back to Boston for the holidays didn’t really work out for me, and Mack’s family is up in San Francisco, so I just stuck with him for it.
MACK: He says that like I dragged him everywhere all week. We did a ton of stuff he wanted, too.
TYLER: What did you boys get up to, then? More people-watching?
SMITTY: It’s not people-watching-
MACK: (overlapping) You’re making it sound weird, it’s not weird-
TYLER: (laughs) Okay, sorry. What did you get up to on your very normal Christmas?
SMITTY: I mean, honestly, not much. Watched some Christmas movies-
MACK: Muppets Christmas Carol makes him cry.
SMITTY: (shoves him) shut the fuck up, Mack! (to Tyler) We had dinner at his family’s place, then I took him to midnight mass. Then we had a sleepover at my place after.
CAT: Are you religious?
SMITTY: Yeah, Catholic. It was a whole, like, thing, since I’m gay, but I’ve come to terms with it. It was a really nice experience, actually—the people at the Cathedral were really nice.
CAT: That’s really awesome. I’m happy for you, being able to reconnect with religion. It must be hard, I can’t even imagine. How was it for you, Mack?
MACK: Yeah, it was nice. My family’s never really been religious, but it was still a good time. Real nice community out there.
SMITTY: He liked it even more when I took him out for food the next day.
MACK: (laughs) Yeah, that was the highlight.
TYLER: Okay, now, Will—I have a theory that Mack’s a really bad gift-giver. Can you tell us, did he get you anything?

MACK: Okay, just because you’ve had, like, a million years to get good at it, doesn’t mean im bad.

SMITTY: Yeah, June fourteenth, noon, uh, PST, I think.
CAT: Can you tell us anything else? I mean, we don’t wanna spoil it, but—
SMITTY: No, yeah, I can tell you. The track list is dropping sometime after this podcast, on my Instagram. It’s—well, I can say Touching Teal won’t be on the album. This isn’t a breakup album, it’s a new-beginnings album, and—Sorry for depriving everyone from a really depressing breakup album, but I listened to some of the angsty songs I made during that time and it just made me feel bad. It didn’t feel freeing or whatever, I don’t want them out there right now. So, those songs are staying in the vault until I feel like I’m in a place to release them. Golden Lining is gonna be more, uh—like—
TOFF: Hopeful?
SMITTY: Yeah, I guess. Hopeful.
CAT: So it’s more of a, like, upbeat kind of album?
SMITTY: Well, not fully. For sure some of it, but… It’s a journey. I’m taking you on a journey down the album, until the title track Golden Lining at the end, thats the resolution of the whole narrative. It’s fun, I hope.
MACK: It is.
CAT: You’ve heard it, Mack?

MACK: Smitty let me listen to a little.

Listen the whole album is gorgeous but i wanna focus specifically on golden lining (song) right now. It was such a good idea to have it be the closing track, it really feels like wrapping a ribbon on top of the whole thing. The way each verse progresses through the last dregs of his previous relationship and how each chorus gets louder to show the new relationship overtaking the negativity. The way its open ended to the future. The blatant love-declaration-ness of it all. It just makes you believe in love again

SMITTY: “No, no—it’s just… really sad. I know there’s always the audience out there for sad yearning and breakup album, but I’m not—ha—I’m not trying to encroach on Conan Gray’s space—(laughs). No, but… The breakup album just made me feel sad. I think I said that to Cat—shoutout Cat Toffoli—”

I like this album a lot better, because of the healing I went through to be able to write it, and the emotions in it.”

SMITTY: “I mean, one day. One day. I hope I’ll eventually be in a place where it’s possible.”

MEYERS: “Okay, now, let’s talk about your current album. How long did it take to come together?”
SMITTY: “I think I started writing it around last July, after the move to the Bay Area. I had some melodies and concepts floating around through the summer, but it really all solidified in the winter. Most of the songs were written between November and April.”
MEYERS: “And they’re mostly about your new beau?”
SMITTY: (laughs) “I think I’m the beau. Beau is too cute for him. But, yeah, most of the songs are about my new boyfriend. He really brought new light to my life—he was—pardon the cheesiness—”
MEYERS: “—we love cheesy, cheesy’s great—”
SMITTY: “—he was the golden lining on the dark storm cloud of my life.”
MEYERS: “I find it really interesting, how you use ‘golden lining’, because, typically, the saying is ‘silver lining’, right?”
SMITTY: “It is, yeah, it’s usually silver. There’s a story behind it—you’re the first to actually ask, somehow.”
MEYERS: “That’s crazy, ‘cuz I feel like that would be, like, the first thing one would notice, that turn of phrase.”
SMITTY: “People notice it, but they don’t really ask. Anyways, the story; I was out with—with my boyfriend, it was probably February, and it was rainy that day. Mostly overcast, some drizzles every once in a while. We ended up at a restaurant by the coast of the Bay, and the rain had cleared up by the end, so we took a walk. There was a moment where the clouds parted a little and sunlight shone through—and it was a beautiful gold light because the sun was setting. When I saw those rays framing him, I knew that was what my album was going to be based around. (beat) Sorry, that was a lot.”
